Not going to list all of the fixtures but it's going on this afternoon. I think that ESPN+ has some games - I know they have Lincoln Imps (7th in League One) hosting Everton, so I'll be pretending to be on conference calls.

Holy Christ, Yoshi Muto scored. Newcastle 1-1 Leicester in the only all-PL match of the day.

EDIT: ...and they lose on penalties [mouthfart sound]

Oxford United beat Millwall to get West Ham, which means we would have gotten West Ham Millwall

How strong will the Everton side be? I'd guess Wednesday field a fairly full strength side- we've got a decent amount of depth, so while there may be X amount of changes, I think they'll be in it to win it, given the opponent and the fact that it's at Hillsborough. I'm really hoping this is one of the TV games, but they'll probably pick Arsenal or Liverpool. Although if I was going to watch another it's clearly the Portsmouth/Southampton game.

Edit: Wednesday got here fielding a wonderfully described "Frankenstein Squad" at Rotherham...Big Dave scored in the 97th minute to win an ugly and scrappy affair. Marks the 4th late win Wednesday have had against Toy Town in the last couple of years. The 3-2 from 2015 was the best, but they're all satisfying.

Silva got a lot of stick from the fans for not playing a good side when we went out in the second round last year at home against Southampton. Yesterday he played a relatively strong side.

A lot will depend on if Everton can get on track in the PL- last week's game away to Villa was a terrible showing.

As mortifying as losing to Colchester is (with a pretty full-strength squad), does anybody care about this? “Wake me for the finals” is the perfect title, whoever thought of that.

Beat Man U at Old Trafford, lose to a League 2 side. Typical Palace.

West Ham lost 4-0 to Oxford. By transitive property that makes Oxford 6 goals better than ManU

Arsenal / Liverpool match has had zero defense and is one of the best matches of the year so far IMO. Willock and Chamberlain with some outstanding strikes, currently 5-4 Arsenal. Hoping to get knocked out of the competition for squad health purposes, let the kids play in the FA Cup

California. Duh.
Well that was entertaining.

How often does a shootout happen and fewer pens are converted than there were goals in the game?

Time to revive this. After Liverpool's literal Academy squad gave Aston Villa a bye today, the actual contenders square off Weds and several of them may or may not take it seriously:

Leicester City @ Everton (2:45pm ET start)
Manchester City @ Oxford United, of League One (2:45pm ET start)
Colchester United (of League Two) @ Manchester United (3:00pm ET start)

I would be greatly amused if Pep Guardiola starts his club's women's team or something. You don't often see 3rd and 4th tier clubs at this stage, even if it IS the league cup. Oxford got there beating Millwall, West Ham and Sunderland. Colchester got there beating Palace (on penalties), Spurs (on penalties - they started the first team!), and fellow League Two side Crawley Town as noted above.

Leicester up 2-0 on Everton on some bad marking in the box. Looks like both clubs fielded A-teams.

Man City up 1-0 on Oxford while fielding their B-team (but still: Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling, Mahrez, etc). Both games are at half.

Meanwhile at 34', Man U vs Colchester is still scoreless. United's A-team has 78% possession and all 8 of the game's shots, but the scoreline persists.

Both minnows are down 2 goals and likely to lose, so I'm watching the last 20 minutes of Everton-Leicester.

There's something about Everton's jersey being sponsored by Angry Birds that just seems fitting.

My god is this United lineup bad for one of the wealthiest clubs in the world. And its not because they're resting players (other than Martial) either.

City is playing a relatively strong (though essentially strikerless) lineup - Bravo, Walker, Otamendi, Fernandinho, Mendy, Rodrigo, Gundogan, Mahrez, De Bruyne, Bernardo, Sterling. I know United beat them on the counter a few months ago but I have a feeling this is going to be an embarrassing match at Old Trafford that really puts Ole under pressure. That midfield is going to have a hard time getting a kick against City's group.

No matter what the result is, Ole will not be under pressure from it.

He should be, but he won’t be. It would take a disastrous finish in the league for him to be sacked.

United's kids are acquitting themselves well so far.

It helps that Pep has decided to play with KDB as striker for whatever reason. They keep kicking it around and there's nobody to bother the center backs or in the box once they get close.

When City started an XI without a traditional striker, I was really curious to see how they'd play. Bernardo Silva was literally all over the field, sometimes going behind Rodri/Gundogan to take a pass from Bravo, other times playing outside as a winger, sometimes playing a false-9 role. His touch map is pretty much the whole field littered with yellow dots.

It was fascinating to watch and in real-time, I was having a hard time figuring out how the City players could so fluidly rotate between the positions and not get caught out of shape. They basically alternated having two out of four players simultaneously playing false-9 roles (De Bruyne, Sterling, Mahrez, and Bernardo) .

The Athletic had a nice piece on it today.

Given how relatively poor City had looked in the autumn in a 4-3-3 that had suddenly become predictable, and how comfortable they have been in that 3-4-3 of late — a set-up Guardiola has never fully let go during his four years in England — it was surely going to be more of the same.

Instead, it was like nothing we had seen before.
In the 16th minute, De Bruyne was up on the front line, with Bernardo Silva hovering somewhere around the No 10 role. Fifteen seconds later, De Bruyne was much deeper, Gundogan and Bernardo had advanced up the pitch and the latter curled in a sublime effort from the right corner of the penalty box.
At one point, Bernardo came deeper than Gundogan and Rodri to get the ball off Claudio Bravo, then disappeared up front again.

Riyad Mahrez was in on goal to score City’s second because, moments before Bernardo found him with a perfect pass, he was pressing the United backline as the left-sided striker.

In fact, Mahrez, Bernardo, De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling all took turns playing up front as the two false nines. They took their turns as wingers, too.

It was something straight out of the football manager “strikerless” community. One step closer to the dream of playing 11 midfielders...

Edit: I consider Ederson a midfielder already.

I enjoyed that they benched John Stones after Tom Pope took him to the woodshed. At least, that's the narrative I'm going with.

Tom Pope might have let his asshole overload his mouth.

Pope had been asked on Twitter to "predict the WWIII result," a reference to American tensions with Iran.

"We invade Iran then Cuba then North Korea then the Rothchilds (sic) are crowned champions of every bank on the planet," the striker replied.

The Rothschilds, a French Jewish family whose banking connections date to the 18th century, are a frequent target of offensive global conspiracy theories.
