Can someone explain the fumble call in the 3rd quarter?

Burrow fumbled as they were getting near the goal line in the 3rd quarter.Bentley I think punched it out. It was ruled a fumble, they reviewed it, and ruled it him being down.

But that's not right, right?

Am I just out of sorts or did the officials fuck this up? The QB isn't down before contact on a forward dive, and the only contact was the punching for the fumble.

Why did the refs reverse this?

I'd add a video but can't find it right now.

One possible explanation was that Burrow was touched (even a graze is enough) either before the ball was touched or concomitantly.

I think the video showed his knee down and there was some contact with him at pretty much the same time or right before the ball was punched out.

I thought qb dives were supposed to be treated as slides since a few years ago, so he is down when he hits and doesn’t have to be down by contact.

Well, then there’s no way they’d have ruled it a fumble on the field.

They're trained to call it a fumble if there's any question of if the player was down already or not, so even if he was giving himself up if he wasn't down yet it should be called a fumble on the field if there's any question

I mean, there didn’t seem to be any question, that if you don’t need to go feet first that there would’ve been any question he was giving himself up.

Whatever, we won.

I thought he was clearly a runner and subject to potentially fumbling, but my guess is a slow review showed some type of grazing with Burrow before the ball was hit and he lost possession. If the ball was hit first, that should have been a fumble, I believe.

His knee was down before any contact occurred, but was that a factor in the ultimate decision?
