They need to open a 40 man spot for Sandoval, right? This might just be that.

I would have DFA'd Bernandino first over Booze, tbh.
I would have DFA’d Chase Shugart before both of them. Guess this just shows where Booser was on the depth chart; lots of LH relievers on the 40. Don’t think this guarantees Bernardino sticks around much longer, either.

Why couldn’t they have made a handshake agreement with Sandoval and sign him in June and have Booser until then?

They didn’t DFA anyone. They are getting a player back. Cam probably was in the same pool as the other ends of the roster relievers and he probably got the most (albeit not much) in return.

Aww, I liked Cam. Sorry he had to get dumped with such a garbage club but maybe he'll shine and end up traded someplace real!

Because those don't fly with the players association nor MLB itself, especially if the intent is to circumvent roster rules.

Also, we have no idea if the two deals are even directly related. For all we know, the Booser trade could have been in the works before Sandoval got finalized.

Likely, Boston's been working the phones to see which of their fringe 40-man pitchers could be offloaded for a minor leaguer in the event they needed to free up a 40-man spot. So, they both are and are not related. (edit: I said pitchers since there are only 16 position players on the 40-man roster).

Reading it's Tyler Schweitzer - left handed starter at teh AA/AAA level. Can't confirm it's a legit source but it's on a couple twitter feeds.

Edit; Hoping this clearing of a 40 man means a signing...hopefully a viable relief arm.

Fair. The 40-man has been full nearly the entire off-season so far. They are always going to need to drop guys to add guys. Odds are good they're trying to work deals like this one for all the fringe guys. Anyone they can't work out a deal for will be DFA instead, so no one should worry that they're still holding on to Bernardino or Shugart or Penrod or Gasper. They'll all likely go at some point.

Huh, Booser was good last year. They must be confident they're going to improve the bullpen in other ways, I guess.

Schweitzer with good, not great peripherals in the minors last year. Another interesting arm.

40 man was full, they needed a spot for Sandoval.

A little bit of a Schreiber/Sandlin trade vibe to this one?

If Schweitzer, seems interesting. One scouting report: "His pitchability and feel for throwing strikes may result in Schweitzer's projection exceeding the sum of his mostly average parts." I did like Booser though.

Yes, but he can't be put on the IL until spring training. He needs a roster spot in the meantime.
To clarify further, there are no ILs in the offseason to try to prevent teams from overly hoarding players. The ILs start again on the first day of spring training, mid-February sometime.

Whip was a little high (1.34) but he was a pretty good pitcher for the most part for Boston. Don't love seeing him go.

I don't either, but Chapman + Wilson + presumably Bernardino ahead of him makes it hard to see him getting time, and at 33 I don't have faith in him automatically repeating a breakout performance. Happy they got a starter for him, if Schweitzer is the return.

Hopefully he and Jhostynxon can both make the team at the same time.

Chicago White Sox - RHP Yhoiker Fajardo
Fajardo has been a standout 17-year-old arm in the DSL this season. He throws primarily a two-pitch fastball/slider combination. The fastball has touched the mid-90s and the slider sits more in the low-80s with late bite. It’s a raw profile, but Fajardo already touches the mid-90s and should be able to add a tick or two more to that as he fills out his 6-3 frame. The two-pitch mix has generated a ton of strikeouts in the DSL this season. Across 50.2 innings of work, Fajardo struck out 64 batters. He pitched to a 2.50 FIP and walked just eight batters in the process. He commands the strike zone well with an easily repeatable delivery but will have to round out the pitch mix to find more success stateside. He allowed a .256 BAA and will have to improve that in the Complex League once he makes his way there.

Between him and Jhostynxon Garcia, they cover every letter of the alphabet except BLMPQUVWZ.

If only the Red Sox could find a ballplayer named Blimp W. Vazquez...

Slow clap.

Trade a fungible RP (bc I think besides closers they’re all fungible) for a SP prospect that looks intriguing. Even on small deals, trading Breslow is my favorite Breslow.

Great story, last year. Hope he sticks in the White Sox pen and does well for them.

As others have pointed out, Booser is probably buried here with Chapman and Wilson. I'm sure it's possible they liked Booser more than Bernardino or Shugart, but they probably don't get a prospect back for Bernardino (and they might be DFA'd down the line, too).

I think the traded someone who wasn't the most obvious DFA candidate, because he could bring back a return. Given the current make up of the roster, Booser probably wasn't going to play a big role in 2025, unless someone got hurt.

"A Yoik (Yoik is English, Joik is Norwegian/Finnish/Swedish) is a traditional Sámi song used to express relationships about people, nature, animals and emotions. It consists of a melody, rhythm, chanting, animal mimicked sounds, lyrics/words, sometimes facial expressions, and gestures as well. Yoik can be performed as a form of entertainment but can also be part of spiritual rituals. A Noaidi (Sámi shaman) would perform Yoik while beating on a Sámi drum to contact the spiritual world.

Every Sámi in the community is given their own Yoik at birth or adolescence, kind of like a signature. Their Yoik follows them through their lifetime. A person's Yoik is considered so closely related to them that Sámi say “Joiking someone” vs “Joiking about someone”. It's considered poor behavior to sing your own Yoik, as a Yoik could describe your personality and appearance. It would essentially be bragging about yourself. But other Sámi can sing your Yoik in front of you."

In the 17th century, it was considered a form of witchcraft by some and became a capital offense."

He has a left arm and 5 years of control I guess?

Also his 0.3 fwar this year would have improved their whole team's bullpen mark by 50%.

Why would a team like the White Sox want Booser???
Was wondering the same thing. There's the control, I guess, as simplicio pointed out. Maybe just to flip him at the trade deadline for a return like the Angels got for Garcia if he's pitching well.

Yhoiker among other qualified arms in the DSL this year, at age 17:
64ks: t-4th (the 3 guys ahead of them were 3-5 years older)
2.50 FIP: 3rd (#1 was 21)
2.33 xFIP: 1st
26.4 K-BB%: 2nd (#1 was 22)

This is what I was thinking. They can put him in a bigger role than the Red Sox could, and if he succeeds, they can roll with him or cash in.

Booser is cheap and potentially useful; seems like the White Sox are just trying to raise their floor and have some competent arms in the pen.

I’m just sad my Johnny Cakes nickname didn’t catch on.

His timeline suggests that he'll be reaching the majors just as Crochet exercises his first opt-out. Timing is everything!
