Wonder what the corresponding roster move is to get Norwood on the 40-man? Is this just one of those guys they will take a quick flyer on and try to dfa and resign when no one is looking?
The Norwood era has begun. Taking Arroyo's 40 spot (Covid) ATM, but they have to drop a pitcher tomorrow to get down to MLB max of 13.

This is a head-scratcher for me, especially with Norwood having no options and the pitcher roster shrinking tomorrow. If Norwood is no good, or is an extended fix-it project of some type, you're effectively dropping to 5 starters and 7 relievers (plus Norwood).

That said he's had a good deal of recent success if you consider individual appearances. There's also a fair share of shitty outcomes in there. Maybe the Sox think they can fix whatever separates his bad from his good outings.

Sox have had recent good success with Phillie pitching reclamation projects. And I expect if he quickly fails to succeed here, he will be quickly DFA’d and perhaps resigned to a ML deal
The questions are how quickly is quickly, and what would the effect be in the standings. Because I really don't want to see them tank a pair this season in hopes they "can figure him out."

It does seem like he may only have until Arroyo is ready to come back. At that point they will need to drop someone from the 40-man, which could be Norwood himself. Might be a short stay.

Excellent point. I expect if he sucks that he will get no more time than these guys did for the Sox last year:

Yes, the fact that he has no options really jumps out. I'm guessing Braiser or Danish probably gets sent down, but when Arroyo comes off the IL there's a decision to be made. So who gets DFA to make room on the 40? Has RFsnyder made Arroyo a candidate? Will it be one of the under performing relievers? Perhaps another team takes a flyer on one of the guys not working out so well here or maybe Norwood get's dropped. As you said, it's a head scratcher, but I guess we'll see how it shakes out soon enough.

Norwood gets DFA'd. Given that every team has the same issue, the Red Sox are betting that Norwood will get through waivers.
OK. One game, no appearances was less than I expected

Not gone yet. This was gamed out by Chaim to try to get Norwood through waivers, using the June 20 deadline as leverage to ensure that Norwood is not claimed.
Good point. He's gone from the active roster though. Remains to be seen if they'll be able to sneak him through waivers. If they were the only claiming team (don't think they know that or not) the first time, they might be able to slip him through regardless of the expected activity today.

What about Heath Hembree, Drew Sutton, and Otis Nixon? Wendell Kim as a coach? Bob Tewksbury as consultant or wherever he did?

Too bad we never had Andy or Alan Ashby, Norm Charlton, Eric Milton, Greg Norton, Justin or BJ Upton. Or Garry Templeton!

In June, Houck has pitched 7.2 innings with an ERA of of 1.17. His FIP is 1.04. His xFIP is 1.8. Given that Winckowski is a serviceable starter and Sale and Paxton are a few weeks from returning, is Houck our closer now? Like permanently?

Schreiber for the 8th, Houck for the 9th.

I'm also wondering whether we can bring up Bello and Walter to bolster the bullpen in late August and beyond. It would remove the need to spend prospects on bullpen arms. Seabold would still be there as an extra spot starter.

Cora has said he's the closer now, so at least for this season, it appears the door is closed on Houck moving back to the rotation.

My guess on bullpen reinforcements is that prospects like Bello and Walter (particularly Bello since he's already on the 40-man) might not be plan A for late August and beyond, but they are a reasonable fallback plan that may allow Bloom to be more judicious when shopping at the deadline. If it comes down to an overpay for a mediocre arm, his hand isn't forced into a bad deal out of a need to do something.

Right now, it looks like Strahm/Scheiber for the 7th/8th in some form and Houck as the closer in games in which the Red Sox have a lead. Brasier has four straight hitless, scoreless innings and looks like the current 6th/7th inning bridge. Robles has been inconsistent and is currently pitching in games where the Red Sox are behind. Diekman, Sawamura, Danish and Davis are getting low-leverage innings.

Taylor will likely send Sawamura back to AAA and will lengthen the pen.
Whitlock and Eovaldi will likely send Winckowski and Danish back to AAA.

John Schreiber has pitched in 23 games and only given up ERs in one of those appearances. Under team control through 2026 and is only 28 years old.

He has really stabilized the pen and been one of the key players in the Sox recent turnaround. Huge success story for Bloom. Fourth highest war among pitchers on the team (behind Pivetta, Wacha, and just barely…Eovaldi). Got his opportunity and has more than made the most of it. The beauty of baseball!

Schreiber might be a late Bloomer.

A guy like this is a good illustration of the variability/unpredictability of relievers. He's had a very nondescript career to this point and not much of a pedigree.
Thursday's Alex Speier Globe article details the development of Schreiber from a four-seam/slider guy topping out at 94 mph with an unconventional delivery to a guy whose slider now breaks an additional 3 inches and his fastball now tops out at 97 mph, including his relentless work on his pitches and his use of BOS's strength and conditioning staff to increase his velocity.

He's definitely a organizational development success story, no matter where his career goes from here. As noted above, he's under control for his age 28-32 seasons (2022-2026).

Last night (12 pitches), his usage was slider 83-84 (5), four-seamer 94-96 (4) and changeup 89-90 (3).

And it works. Norwood clears waivers and is outrighted to Worcester, per Christopher Smith (masslive.com).

Today was Robles 6th blown save. It's July 1st. In 2021 4 players tied for the league lead with 8 blown saves.

That is ridiculous. He should not be pitching when the Red Sox are leading. He probably shouldn't be pitching at all for the Red Sox.

That wasn't really a traditional save situation. Robles had a 3-run lead in the 6th. 2 outs with no one on and then implosion. I think Cora went too long with him, but that really was a spot for the back end of the bullpen against one of the worst teams in baseball.
The guy just can't throw strikes.

Best case for Robles is he goes on the 15 day injured list. Otherwise he should be dfa'd and replaced by someone who does not consistently give away games.

Irrelevant. It is still a blown save by rule.

He's a pitcher who Cora trusts with a lead. He has blown the lead 6 times, therefore he should not be put in a close game especially when the team has a lead.

Just clearly Robles needs to be DFA’d.
I get that BP arms are a coin flip but that means when they are consistently coming up tails you get rid of them. No big loss to the team. Generally I’m against trading for a “proven” closer since the ones that can do it consistently are crazy expensive and far too often they just implode. I like Bloom’s approach but I’m not sure about his willingness to cut ties.
Any pitcher in AAA could be pitching better than Robles right now.

He's the most volatile of volatile relievers. Not just appearance to appearance, but within a game. I didnt want to cut bait on him since he pitched some huge games down the stretch last season, but I think he's taking command of the "which RH reliever goes when Whitlock comes back" competition. Halfway though the season, in a tight race, I think the team is past the point of optioning the more effective Brasier or Sawamura just to keep Robles in the organization.

EDIT: I see Robles committed the grevious sin of not facing the media after yesterday's game. Probably staring down the possibility that his career is in jeopardy. I expect the drumbeat of "he's the one that has to go" will increase. It may be accurate, but that's only coincidental to the needs of the butthurt media brigade to set him on fire.

This is the frustrating part. For all the complaints about leaving him in too long, he struck out the first guy on three pitches and got a fly out on two with the second batter. With Hill going out early, you'd never burn another reliever by having someone warm up behind him. By the time Diekman was ready, the lead was gone and the wheels had completely fallen off. You just can't have a guy like that on the roster.

I don't understand why Robles has gone to the slider so much this year. Last year, 14%, this year, 33%. And it has been getting absolutely crushed. The changeup was fine, it seemed. Not sure if this is something that could be addressed in a phantom rehab situation, but it is kind of glaring.

He seems to pitch backwards at times, completely changing what was working out of nowhere and then continuing to change his mind on what he wants to do from pitch to pitch and batter to batter, and not in the normal way pitchers do. It doesn't help that Vásquez is just not a good enough signal-caller behind the plate, either, but it shouldn't be hard to call for the number one when you throw 96+ and were facing a middling club, especially with a two-run lead. He has decent enough control that he should be able to locate his fastball well enough to get guys out with it.

Easy for me to say, but dude is only 31 and still touches 98. If he's DFA I assume someone will grab him (Tampa?).

This would be my ideal scenario. Put him on the IL with Hellenic Flu, give him a few weeks off to tinker with his pitches, review video, and try again. If he’s still bad in August we can always DFA him then but he got huge outs last year and you can never have enough guys out of the bullpen who throw upper 90s these days.

In the meantime, I hope Daniel Bard or David Robertson is on the roster by the time Robles returns to the team.

He was just on the IL a month ago for back spasms. He's been worse since he came back.

Before IL: 16 G, 17.0 IP, 2.65 ERA, 5.18 FIP, 1-1 record, 2 saves, 3 BS, 6 holds
After IL: 9 G, 6.2 IP, 13.50 ERA, 7.03 FIP, 0-2 record, 0 saves, 3 BS, 1 hold

They got him off the scrap heap (twice) so him getting picked up on waivers by someone else isn't some great loss, IMO. It's not worth the 40-man spot to stash him on the IL. We're into July now. It's time to cut bait with the duds and toss a couple of new WooSox lines into the water.
