Not that it matters all that much, but were Cordero and watanabe in camp as a professional courtesy or something? It's hard to imagine Cordero doing any better than he did, and it was almost impossible for him to make the team no matter what. So, if they weren't planning on him being with the PawSox for at least a month or two, what was the point? Same with Watanabe. He seemed a longshot to even make Pawtucket, so why pay his airfare and meal money for 6 weeks of major league camp?

Maybe it was partly professional courtesy.  And maybe Cordero's good spring training results were achieved with unimpressive stuff.

Or maybe it was in case there were several spring training injuries. No reason not to have extra depth when you can have more than 25 players on the team.

The same reason numerous big league clubs always bring a surplus of veterans and hopefuls into camp on minor league contracts: As a hedge against a rash of injuries.

EDIT - Errrrr... or what dbn said.

Farrell has said more than once this spring that they don't particularly look at results in the spring, they look at the nature of the performance.  He's mostly been talking about batters that way, but presumably it's at least as true for pitchers.  We know Farrell has a pretty good eye for pitch quality, so my assumption is that the coaching staff didn't feel Cordero's stuff would hold up in the regular season.

Yeah, I'm not arguing that Cordero should have made the team, and I agree that there was no a lot to see in his stuff the few times I saw him pitch.  I'm just surprised that if they worked out the details of him not wanting to go to Pawtucket in advance, why not bring in someone else who would go there, given the low probability of him making the major league team.  But, not a big deal one way or the other.  If there was ever a need for Cordero on the roster, the season wouldn't be going well.
