I'll admit I'm a huge fan of his so I am probably biased, but Toucher's weakness being "Below average knowledge of sports" is crap. He's huge on hockey and baseball, good on football, and below on NBA if anything.

Surprised Holley is so low at #15. For a guy who has supposedly caused the firing of two guys (I know I know), he doesn't seem to have a lot of influence.

Also, what's the story behind Merloni's weakness? Damnity, damn, damn...

I think Merloni just has a habit of saying "damn" a lot.

Tagnuay Pro: Innate ability to stir the pot when there is no pot.

Tanguay Con: Takes some of the weirdest and nonsensical stands ever seen or heard.

Isn't that the same thing? Taking a stand when there's no sense to make a stand?

"Toucher and Rich" is the highest-rated morning drive show in the market. I don't care if Bruce Allen doesn't find them funny. The fact that neither Fred nor Rich is ahead of Callahan is silly. (I know Fred drives the conversation on the show, but Rich should be a lot higher, too.)

Felger at number one is an appropriate ranking. His act may eventually grow tiresome, but the show's numbers seem to increase in every ratings book. The "Felger brand" dominates this market.

On an unrelated note, I'm happy to see Baxter Holmes get some love. He's the best beat guy scribing for either paper, in my opinion. He's a terrific WRITER, which is something few sports reporters are.

Edit: I'm a moron, and missed that Fred was number four. My point about Callahan still stands, though.

I think the thing to keep in mind is that the "draft" is predicated on ranking the contenders based on who can move the needle rather than on their overall quality of work.  Hence Felger/Shaughnessy/Callahan at the top of the list.  If they have one thing in common, it is the ability to push buttons and get people riled up with their schtick.  Felger is the catalyst on the highest rated drive time sports show in Boston.  Shaughnessy, to everyone's chagrin, earns clicks and sells papers with his bullshit.  And so on.

But then why is Steve Bulpett on the list instead of Mazz, or even Cafardo?

I like the concept, but the criteria seems kind of jumbled.

But then again, it's just an arbitrary list that someone made up. Still fun to discuss, though!

Agree with most everything in his preferences list except for the fact he had Jackie McMullen so low. Really like the bsmw site.

-leaving Tony Mazz off the list completely
Probably should have footnoted Mazz under the Felger entry, to the effect of "since he just always agrees with anything Mike Felger says, we'll put Tony Mazz here"

This is the paragraph describing the list:

The first draft is more of a “power-rankings” sort of thing. These are the top-30 most influential and powerful media personalities, not counting editors, producers, publishers, etc. These are the folks who create the storylines and talking points that drive the Boston sports media.

Once you get past the first wave of button pushers, you get into the quality writers (and less effective button-pushing voice talents) who influence the sports storylines in the region.  I'd imagine he left off Mazz and Cafardo because they aren't creating waves, pushing buttons, or influencing story lines.  Mazz is nothing but a Felger yes-man and Cafardo is a lazy hack who's only noteworthy offerings come when Boras's hand is up his ass operating his mouth.
