I'm confused about the July 15th call up requirement. Isn't he just a long time Minor Leaguer of ours? I'm not familiar with giving your own guys a Major League "up or out" clause.

He's completely out of options and has elite arm strength. More than likely he sucks or gets hurt in the Majors, but they have to at least see what they have before letting him go for free. They'd have to DFA him to assign him to the minors (other than rehab, which he's done plenty of this year, and prior)

I believe it's because he is out of options and has been on a rehab assignment that is about to expire.

If Slaten ends up missing the rest of the season, what sort of service time will fulfill his rule 5 obligations in future years? Does he just have to be rostered for another 70 games before he can be optioned regardless of when he returns?

Mata has no options (I think due to the length of his time in the MILB system?) and has to be either on the 26 man or face waivers. His last IL stint ended June 15th and the max rehab time in the minors for pitchers is 30 days.

NOW we have a bit more information as to why Cora might have been trying to get extra outs from starters this week. He wasn't drunk. He hadn't been hit on the head. He didn't place bets on the other team.

I am far more concerned about Slaten's impact on the team *this* year. He was essentially Martin's late-inning stand-in. Starters are going to have to come up big vs. KC and the Sox are going to need runs.

Listening to the SoxProspects podcast recently, and Mata's duration in the organization is wild. He pitched 50+ innings in Portland in 2019 and has yet to make his major league debut. Hope he can stay healthy and catch lightning in a bottle with him, as he certainly has the stuff.

They have to option someone other than Criswell out, right? Doesn't it have to be 10 days, there's no injury here (except replacing Slaten to begin with).

They can option Criswell, the rule is if you're sent down, you can't be called back up for 10 days unless there is an injury, not that you have to stay up for 10 days.

Do they even need to make a move today? The bullpen seems in good shape and should be able to manage one more game. Worry about what to do with Mata tomorrow (personally, I think a DFA may be as likely as putting him on the roster, although they could just put him on for Criswell or Horn or Anderson, too.)

I think you're right that a DFA is a likely outcome: we've run out the string as far as we can with this guy, and now somebody's got to decide. If it's me, I'm optioning Criswell and giving Mata a few low-leverage outings against MLB competition. But I will hardly be shocked if they decide otherwise: in a way, it's the more obvious move.
