I don't think Coyle is a problem. This is basically who he is. He is at 1.46 points per 60 this year. He was at 1.05 last year, 0.87 in the year he came over from Minnesota. 1.77 two years ago prior to the shutdown. In Minnesota he was pretty much between 1.40 and 1.70 on a yearly basis.

Coyle is playing fine, he's not regrerssing or playing poorly. He's just not a 2C and never has been.

Or maybe he just needs someone more skilled to play with than Charlie Coyle, for whom it could also be stated, happily cashed in a couple months of inspired play at the end of 2019, and has retreating to his level of play in Minnesota, which is a real dagger for a team desperate for a number 2 center.

To me, Coyle is the most aggravating player on this roster because we’ve seen what he can be when he’s engaged and motivated. Last year’s excuse was the knee. What’s his excuse this year?
I agree with a lot of the criticism levied in this thread. Hall is an interesting case because it seems like he enjoys temping on the first line but is more comfortable not having to be “the guy.” Hall meshes well with Pasta.

I think the team needs to split up the first line and build around pairings that have shown some spark.

Marchand & Bergeron
Hall & Pasta
Coyle & Haula
Frederic & Foligno

Mix and match Smith (I’d try 1RW), DeBrusk (3LW), Studnicka (2C between Hall and Pasta), Nosek (4th W), Blidh, Lazar, Seny, Steen, Kuhlman…until you find the right combinations. If they can upgrade 2C, great. But I’m not sure I’d spend the ammunition this year. I’d prefer they see what they have in Studnicka as an offensive playmaker.

Well, Marchand and Bergeron are paired now.

Is it fair to ask if Studnicka is worth the hype at this stage? This is his fifth pro season, and he still can’t crack the NHL roster, even when there’s a glaring need for him. And yes, I grant that organizational philosophy might be Studnicka’s biggest obstacle to making the NHL team.

I don't think I disagree strongly with most of the critiques here, but it's tough coming off a game where they found out their best player and their #2 RW were out more or less last minute. Take that away from an already offesnivley challenged team and they really didn't have a shot last night.

Of course playing passively on top of that doesn't help.

Who knows? 70 points in 89 career AHL games seems fairly good. but points don't tell the full story. He got an extended look to start last season and didn't stick but I haven't loved his usage this year. Guess we'll fine out over the next few weeks.

I mean treating them as a pair rather than an unbreakable trio with Pasta. Butch’s unwillingness to spread the wealth out is the challenge there.

Unless you meant paired on the Covid-19 list, which is unfortunately also true.

Studnicka played well in training camp at 2C. He really hasn’t gotten the chance to play with top 6 talent as a center during the regular season. He may or may not be worth the hype but this is a good time to put him with talent and see if it works.

Yeah, I meant paired on the protocol list. This season’s gonna be a long one.

I can only speak for myself, but the frustration with last night wasn’t in the result, but rather that it was glaringly predictable. First game home after road trips tend to be tough, but knowing they’d be without Marchand and Smith, it was a near foregone conclusion that they’d struggle mightily against one of the better teams in the league.

But that's kind of my point...I'm surprised this was the game that seems to have unified everyone around here given that they were almost certainly going to struggle.

And again, I think most of the critique is spot on, although I'm (as usual) not quite as down on things as others.

Last night just illustrated how paper thin and poorly built the roster really is. Also the coach’s reluctance to integrate young players into meaningful roles to see if they can actually help at this level is adding to the frustration. In the words of Adam Oates “What are we doing? What direction are we going in?”
