Bruins acquire Mike Reilly from the Senators for a 3rd round pick.

He has had positive possession numbers the last four years, and this year has started in the defensive zone almost 60% of this starts, which is a marked departure from his previous years. He’s a good pivot for the 2nd PP, but won’t likely score much. Good depth for the back line on the left side where they need it. He’s a UFA at the end of this year.

Not sure how I feel about a 3rd being traded for him, but he’s been a much improved player in Ottawa the past two years when their defense was lean.

Carlo is the one that worries me, but I think this has more to do with their concern regarding the health of Gryz, Lauzon and Zboril and their inability to keep them healthy. Hopefully Reilly can play some RD, as I suspect they will need him to play early and often with most of their defense out.

McAvoy's injury looked minor by all accounts. Gryzleck is a concern as it appears he got concussed, but hopefully not serious; it's too early to really know either way. Carlo is a bigger concern given the seriousness of his earlier concussion. Miller is at best probably going to be in-and-out.

The problem is that even a week or 2 with all or most of them out really could derail their playoff chances.

It doesn't necessarily say a ton about the current injuries imo. If you are going in a run you need to stock up on defense to protect against the inevitable injuries during the playoffs.

It's because he's driving and not flying.

Not surprised that Sweeney added a puck mover on D. They'll pair him with Carlo if healthy, if not Miller, if healthy and available.

A lot of the player models have trouble accurately valuing good players on terrible teams, but analytics absolutely love this guy. I'm really excited to see how is game translates playing on a functional team.

Maybe it is due to watching the defense before his arrival struggle so badly but Reilly has really popped to the eye test in the 2 games. I've always kind of thought he was a JAG since he's bounced around quite a bit in his career, but he appears to be a really useful player. Quick decisions, quick puck movement, doesn't seem to get out of position often. He looks like a real find early on. So far:

Trades like this one don’t get the fanfare, but there is always a guy like him that turns out to make an outsized impact on long cup runs. He may be a D version of Chris Kelly for this year’s team.

The seamlessness in which they just plugged him in and played him is remarkable. It's like the stuff he's good at is exactly what they need right now. And I like that he wears an old-fashioned hockey number.
