Same. Foligno is a grinder third liner. If we get him for reasonable value, then he gives the bottom 6 a really solid player. But if he ends up more than 3m a season...fuck.
Yeah this would be a quality signing and a better player than the guys they already got in the fold. I just wonder what the endgame is going to be. There's a glut of similar type players.

Hey, at least no amount of money on a 1 year deal will make this worse than trading a 1st round pick for him

33 years old with a lot of mileage.

Here's Dom's write-up in the Athletics top 50 free agents. Foligno came in at 31.

https://theathletic.com/2705164/2021/07/27/nhl-free-agency-ranking-the-top-50-available-ufas/

Projected contract: $3.0 million x 2.3 years
Keeping term short here is key as Foligno can fall off a cliff at any moment. There are a lot of miles on his body and though he was still a strong forechecker last season, that skill won’t last forever. The decline began last season and though he’s still projected to provide defensive value, it needs to be in a much smaller role. Most of his comps saw a huge fall-off in value the very next season and half didn’t make it another year after that.

“Can fall of the cliff at any moment”

Do they knowsomething about Bergeron retiringafter ‘23? Capitalizing on a two year window to win? Long term I’d rather go young but if he somehow puts them over the top, then it’s good
Bye bye at least one of Kreijci and JDB I assume

Hate the Haula and Nosek signings, but don't mind Folgino at all. Someone else mentioned it somewhere, but the 4th line couldn't play tough minutes last year which has a ripple effect on the top 3 lines. Specifically building a line that can eat D-zone draws and play against other teams top 6 is important so the skill players can score.

Foligno is a legit shutdown defender, I like this signing.

I HATED this signing when I saw it on twitter. How many left shot LW can we get? But then I opened the replies and Steve Dangle wants to jump into a volcano and the leafs fans are just crushed by this one, so now I love it. They absolutely have something lined up for Debrusk. There is no spot for him on the roster at all.

Foligno - Coyle - Haula
Frederic - Lazar - Nosek
Wager/Kuhlman/Blidh/Senyshyn

Probably something like that in the bottom 6? Agreed DeBrusk goes now in all likely hood. Would also like to shed Wagner but doubt they'd find any takers.

Nosek's a great face off man, I think he takes the 4th C spot over Lazar. Ditto with Haula and Coyle.

There's a whiff of Backes to this one but it's only 2-years. I would've preferred a single year but the 2nd was probably needed to get him to come.

Grit, big body, will help defensively and can fight which isn't a huge need but they did lose Miller so having someone around that can handle things if necessary is nice.. Could probably be play net front on the 2nd PP. More useful all around than someone like Ritchie. Will get in on the forecheck a little more too.

We'll see what happens on the jersey number front. Foligno's been 71 his entire career, which of course Hall took. I thought 71 was dumb number for Hall, it looks like a random assigned number they give to the AHL dudes in preseason who have no chance of making the team.

It also caused me to regularly wonder why Jiri Slegr was so out of position so often. Drove me crazy.

I see it more as a Chris Kelly move. Good defensive player who can also provide some offensive production, known for intensity and being a major locker room asset.

Foligno says "they want me in a second line role until they figure out what Krejci is doing."

Gulp.

What’s the fit in Boston? What role does Nick Foligno play?
They want me in a second-line role until they figure out what (David) Krejci is doing. (Krejci announced Friday that he was returning to his native Czech Republic.) Maybe play on the right wing. They know I can play on the left wing, obviously, but play on the right wing because that’s where they feel like they have a little bit of a shortage. And some power-play time with the big boys at net front. So those are all enticing to me, where I feel I’m at in my career. I still feel like I have some game to give. I just came off playing (18) minutes a night last year, so I still feel like there’s that excitement to make a difference in that role. That’s a team, Boston, that kind of lines up with what I thought about myself, and I’m looking forward to being able to deliver on that.

Oh boy we're in big trouble. I think he's the 3rd line RW, honestly. Smith and Hall have chemistry already and my guess is they move up Coyle to give him first shot at Centering them. Hall is an elite play driver so I could see him doing well with Coyle and Smith. Maybe not as lethal as with Krejci at the pivot but I could easy see 40 ES goals out of that line if everyone stays healthy. There is a gaping hole at 3rd line RW though and Foligno fits that pretty well if Haula is 3C. I don't really mind Foligno getting the net front slot on PP1 as he's a huge upgrade on Nick Ritchie even in his advanced state of decline. Let's hope it plays out that way. Bumping smith down to line 3 in favor of Foligno feels bad.
