So is this when we overpay for guys so ownership can say “hey we spent to the cap.” Now that we lost out on Tavares.

He’s OK, LHD. My guess is this sets them up to trade Grzelyck or Krug for a right winger.

AAV seems fine, 5 year term seems extreme though.

If they trade Krug and think John Moore will replace him, then I’m fucking lost. I really hope they don’t trade Krug unless they’re blown away with the return. He’s incredibly underrated around here.

I don’t get the term at all. I don’t know the player (apparently I’m not alone in that), so I don’t want to judge right away. But 5 years for what seems to be at first glance a JAG is... curious.

Chara - McAvoy
Krug - Carlo
Grzelyck - Miller
Moore - McQuaid

Someone has to go, right?

Edit: I’ll add that Moore is better than Grzelcyk, so I guess they could just put Grz on 9, but it seems unlikely.

What am I missing? I haven't heard these rumors.

I don't think they need him, we already have a better version of him on the team.
He’s said he won’t sign an extension with Columbus and will go to FA, so people are assuming he’s available.

I agree he’s likely not worth the cost. Unless they can flip Krejci for him, but not sure why CBJ would do that.

Moore was a top 4 guy on the Devils last year playing ~20 min a night. Seemed to get the tough assignments. Got heavy work on the PK.

Moore replaces Krug = MASSIVE Downgrage
Moore replace Gryz = Maybe Upgrade

Gryz does have a solid contract for a 7th defenseman, if they want to move on of McQuaid/Miller

It does make you wonder what their plans are for the half a dozen or so LHD they will have rotting in Providence this year

Yeah, I don't hate it. The 5 years seems long, but he's also only 27 so I don't think it's that much of an issue. He fills a pretty big need for the team, and may improve being on the 3rd line with easier matchups throughout the season.

If they have a deal lined up to move Krug, this makes the most sense. I could see them thinking McAvoy would be able to step up to PP1 minutes, it’s a risky gamble though overall.

Another small consideration - Krug is essential at 3-on-3, but Moore is by all accounts similarly adept in OT. Signs would point to them seeing Krug as a way to bring in that top 6 RW they need.

Moore says he can play on the right, but there’s not much room there. Feels like there is another shoe to drop at some point. I don’t think the current group of 8 D are on the opening night roster.

I think that Moore coming in means that Sweeney has/plans to move someone out. McQuaid is who I'd like to go, but he has a NMC. I think Grz or Krug might be gone, and I think if Krug can be moved for a good wing for Krecji, I'd be happy. Lots of moves today though, I'm going to need PSK to make some spreadsheets so I understand everything now.

Moore is not a 9th floor guy. Moore is a big, strong second-pairing defenseman who plays 20 minutes a game and puts shots on net. He’s 28 with seven years of NHL experience.

I agree with PSK that Moore’s signing likely means the Bruins will include Krug in a trade package for a RW. That’s a lot better of scoring to trade, but the Bruins must believe Carlo and Gryz have the potential to up their point totals.

Signing Wagner and Nordstrom for a total of $2.25 for 2018-2019 seems to me a reasonable gamble that one or both can be a productive bottom six forward. If both fail, at least Sweeney will have failed relatively cheaply.

At that price, think of Wagner and Nordstrom as competent NHL-level insurance if none of the kids at Providence impress management enough to make the roster. If JFK or Studnicka or Frederic show they’re ready, then the Bruins have the opportunity to shuffle starts among a low-salary bottom six group (Backes excepted).

I don't mind this deal as much as most. While the term is a year or two too long, it seems like good value considering Holden (an inferior player) got a 2.6m AAV. It also frees them up should they find a trading partner for Krug.

Ultimately, he seems kind of like Carlo in that he's a bigger guy who can skate, but it seems as if the defensive portion of his game took the longest to develop, thus why he's been around a bit. This could end up being an underrated signing, as Moore has pedigree as a 1st rounder, and seems much more solid in his own end than any other LHD on the roster not named Chara.

I don't see Moore as a 9th floor guy. Gryz on the other hand would fit perfectly up there, and even has the right contract for a #7/8 defenseman

If Moore replaces Gryz, then I thoink Boston will have solidly upgraded their defense.

If More replace Krug, then I think the Bruins have downgraded their defense pretty substantially

And honestly you are trying to Navigste a pretty tough task to move Krug for a Krejci winger.

You need to find a contender, who has cap space, and is willing to move a physical RH shot 55+ point RW in the deal for a offensive defenseman.

Honestly I think it is very hard to get someone who is going to be substantially better than Heinen/Donato on that second line. And if they are not substantially better than what is the point as you are substantially downgrading your defense

Gryz was Boston’s top defenseman by Corsi and Fenwick last year. He was sheltered but no more so than Carlo. It’d be pretty rough to have him on the 9th floor after last year’s performance.

I’m not saying Moore should be on the 9th floor, just that I can’t see Gryz there either. It really seems like they need to make a trade.

Gryz needs to play. I would rather play someone that skates fast to pucks makes smart clearing decisions than someone that lines up and hits bodies better but makes lousy clears (looking at you Miller and McQuaid). Transition and puck movement out of the zone is so important. It nearly killed this team versus Toronto and largely killed this team vs. Tampa Bay.

As they say in boxing, styles make fights. I'm not sure that it's possible to say that a single style works against all opponents. I thought Gryz and the transition game played well against Toronto, not so well against a more-physical TB squad, but YMMV

I think BigMike has it right. Moore will play, Grz probably starts up on 9 and then they rotate around. Sweeney used his favors talking points when commenting on the signing- “we ran through 10 defenseman in the playoffs...” so seems they’ll take this group into camp. Grz is the odd man out to start, but there should be enough ice time for everyone.

I think this is the team that opens camp. They’ll see if they can fill the existing holes (3C, RW) internally and then go from there. They have a bit of a surplus at LD if you include the Providence kids, but seems like they’ll hold as long as they can.

Moore is definitely in the lineup. He can really skate and has a decent shot. I have a friend that is a devils fan that says he turns into Bobby orr in overtime, which should be interesting. I'm fine with the contract, it's long but he will be 33 when it ends and it's low money. He will also be desirable for Seattle.

There has to be a shuffle coming though. I can't see a guaranteed $4 mil in the press box every night.

Adam McQuaid has 1 year left at 2.75M
Kevan Miller has 2 years left at 2.5M each
Torey Krug has 2 years left at 5.25M each
Matt Grzelcyk has 2 years left at 1.4M each, and then will be an RFA.

Carlo and McAvoy won't be dealt because of their skill and <1M contracts. Chara and John Moore won't be traded. I think one, if not two of the above are gone in a deal to get a 2W. I could see how each contract could be desirable to someone. Krug as the skill. Grz for long term control. Miller for 2 years of good 2nd pair D, McQuaid for a 1 year term.

The reasons you site for Grz being appealing to other teams are exactly why I think he’s more valuable to the Bruins - a team friendly contract and control are a reason I really think he’s not likely to get moved either, at least not right now. Even if he doesn’t get any better than he already has shown (which is unlikely) an NHL D-man with that contract will ALWAYS be valuable to other teams and could be moved in a heartbeat at any time, and its low enough where even if he’s up on 9 half the time nobody is going to be too worried about that.

If anyone moves its more likely to be one of the other 3.
