Watched a couple of the Giants games this weekend against the Everett Silvertips (home and home). One thing I noticed was that Lysell was a bit sloppy carrying the puck into the offensive end when trying to build up a head of steam. In the first game he got stick checked (turning the puck over) a couple of times and I don't recall having the sense that it was the Silvertips better defensemen doing it. He got a couple of assists in the game as the Giants won 5-3. The second game the Giants were dominated and Lysell was rather quiet to my eyes. I left the game thinking that he needed time at Providence playing against more mature players - even given his skills. I was rather surprised to see the Sweeney quote you guys posted above. Reminds me why I'm not an NHL scout :)
Thanks for the scouting report. It's cool that you got to see him play. It's probably unlikely that he'll see any time in Boston this year, but he'll definitely be the guy to watch in training camp in the fall.

I don't think we'll see him in Boston this year. Vancouver's regular season runs to 4/16. They aren't very good but I believe everyone, or close to everyone, makes the playoffs. The Bruins final regular season game is 4/29. Maybe if Vancouver gets bounced quickly there's a week or so to squeeze him into a regular season game but that seems like a perfect world scenario. Providence's regular season runs to 4/30 and they are in 2nd place so they will be in the playoffs. It's far more likely that Lysell gets his feet wet in Providence than in Boston.

We'll see what next year brings. I think there's a legitimate chance he makes the team. They were impressed by him at camp this year and rewarded him by keeping him around for an extra game. I'm not sure how the rules work with the AHL anymore. He was eligible to play there this season but the team sent him to Vancouver. I'm not sure if that means he's in a Vancouver/Boston only situation next year. I'll need a refresher.

Meanwhile, Sweeney did update on Lohrei. Ohio State's season is over but Lohrei is still dealing with a LBI. They're going to let him heal and then let him decide on his future. I'm not sure what the right play is here.

If Lysell was eligible for AHL this past season, I don't believe the assignment to Vancouver forces him to lose that eligibility next year. But info is sparse.

I assume Lohrei will be Providence bound next season.

Would he even be eligible for the AHL, or would he have to go back to Vancouver again?
Yes - the age thing in the AHL is a transfer agreement with the CHL that has a carve out for imports who play for a euro team and then play for a CHL team AFTER being drafted by an NHL. Had he played in the CHL last year pre-draft, he wouldn't be able to play in the AHL until he was 20 years old, but because of how they worked this out, he can report to the AHL after their season ends, go through training camp and get assigned to Providence next year, if that is what the Bruins decide is best for him. A guy like Harrison, who doesn't turn 19 until June, would have to make the NHL next year or go back to juniors.

Just clearing out a contract. Word is Lyle has struggled this year. Providence has a million defenseman, 11 at the moment post-Lyle trade. Plus perhaps Lohrei on the way.

Mark Divver is hinting/reporting that the Bruins are still active in the NCAA UDFA market even after landing McLaughlin and Bussi and signing their own prospect, Callahan.

There is Bobby Trivigno who is a center for Umass. He is small, 5'8", but put up 49 points in 37 games as a senior this year. He is from New York and most of the reporting has speculated that he would end up with the Rangers. Ben Meyers will also be a UDFA if he chooses. He winger, Hobey finalist and captain for Minnesota who put up 41 points in 33 games. Minnesota has reached the Frozen Four so he won't be available until next weekend.

Those are the two biggest names that are out there, that I know of. I did not follow a ton of college hockey this season so I'm not sure if there are others.

They seem to have a good track record with the college UDFA's. McLaughlin is off to a nice start. They have traded a lot of picks away recently so this is one way to add to the prospect pool and build depth in the organization.

There was a nice piece in The Athletic today about how respected the B's are around the league with their handling of NCAA UDFA. How they have set up a culture of long term success.

This was the first time that I’ve ever watched Beecher play and overall I like what I saw. He made about 4 or 5 good plays in small areas. He plays well along the wall, good on faceoffs. It’ll be good to see him Providence and see what he can bring there.

Agreed. I watched about 10 Michigan games this year. He's a good player. He makes a difference on that team for sure. I just think there is a lack of vision/passing/notsurebutitssomething missing that makes it seem like he will need to be a passenger to better players in the ozone to have any real offensive impact at the next level. I think that at worst, he's Nosek with more speed and I'm guessing a bit more mean. We'll see if he can get better at that whatever it is that holds him back in the ozone but he's going to carve out a career, I think.

Ben Meyers from Minnesota is now a UDFA. Sounds like he'll be highly sought after. He has attended development camp with the Bruins, so presumably they'll make a call. 41 points in 34 games this season, Minnesota's captain.

They have probably watched him quite a bit. He was at Youngstown with Kuntar and Duran, then OSU with Lohrei.

I don't know much about him but this seems like a nice get. I believe he's young enough for a 3-year ELC. You don't usually see many fresman UDFA signings.

Leading scorer on the team. Twice as many goals as the number 2 player and as many goals as the 2nd and 3rd leading scorers combined.
I watched a fair amount of OSU fawning over Lohrei so I've seen him a bit. The broadcasters called him "the russian" which I love (current geopolitics notwithstanding). He is a mad man on the forecheck and a lot of those goals were because of pressure. He has a really sudden shot. I don't know if he stood out to me much for the complete game that's usually required to succeed at the next level, but he's interesting.

Not everyone will be a Krug but it strikes me as a really effective way to fill out the organization with guys who are more physically-developed, may be unheralded for one reason or another, and have a chance to return some value at the cost of money only.

Makes sense. He has no real path to NHL ice time until 2023-2024 anyways. The Bruins would probably prefer to get him into the system and work with him but no harm in letting him get huge minutes at Ohio State and shoving the contract out a year.

This is a bummer, but it's fine. He's got legit NHL level offensive ability right now. I think he could score 15-20 ES points as an NHL D next year. From the games I saw, though, his own zone remains a problem that would have kept him from playing in Boston, and while he's huge, he's still growing into that big body. 12 more months in a big 10 weight room will do him well. He has a shot at the Hobey Baker next year, though with all the personnel losses at OSU who knows. Luke Hughes is also going to have something to say about that.

I prefer that they go this route tbh - that's the inherent advantage of going NCAA-heavy in the draft: don't have to burn years of development that end up getting players closer to UFA earlier.

Figured out the ELC thing with Beecher. They appear to be keeping their options open. He can’t play in Providence if he signs an RLC for this season. That’s partly why McLaughlin has stuck. If they sign a future ELC, they couldn’t call him up to Boston.

It's a Lysell watch weekend. Final weekend of the WHL season. Vancouver is currently in the last playoff spot, but 1 point clear of Spokane, Prince George and 2 clear of Victoria. Vancouver plays Kelowna (5th) tonight and Kamloops (2nd) tomorrow. The two trailing teams, Spokane and Victoria play 2 against each other.

They are all really bad teams, so we'll see how it shakes out. Someone is getting points from the VIC/SPO games. If Vancouver trips up in their two games (i'm not sure if resting players for a clinched team is a thing in CHL) then Lysell could be in BOS/PRO sometime next week.

Lysell is Vancouver's leading scorer, 21 goals 39 assists in 51 ganes.

Beecher and Bussi also debuted. Beecher led the team with 4 SOG, Bussi stopped 28/30. Good first impressions for both.

Lysell had a goal and assist this weekend to end the regular season with 22-40=62.. They did sneak into the playoffs, which starts next week. Best of 7 against 2 seed Kamloops.

Between here and everywhere.
If the move towards acquiring players like Lysell and Merkulov is the beginning of what Fris mentioned being a shift in drafting philosophy (I know Merkulov wasn't drafted, so maybe young player acquisition philosophy) - consider me excited.

And don't forget McLaughlin.
