Not clear in the article but I assume it's the ECHL affiliate.
Yes, it is the ECHL.

Ya its the ECHL. It's rare that people get from the coast to the NHL except goaltenders. Vladar and Keyser have spent time in the coast recently for the Bruins.
Right, so it seems that the "affiliation" with the Bruins is largely just to drive ticket sales Mariners games. Really don't understand why Portland/So. Maine can't support an AHL team. They used to be able to when I was a kid (see my avatar!).

I wonder how much the pairing situation is discussed between agents and FOs. If I rep a name defenseman who is maybe looking for a bridge contract after a down year, I would be blowing up Sweeney's phone trying to get my guy paired with McAvoy.

Landeskog has primarily been a LW so I don't really see a fit here, especially if Hall is back. I guess one or the other is fine, but my preference is Hall.

My wild card scenario is backing up the Brinks truck for Hamilton. He's a Norris caliber player. It doesn't solve LHD but basically gives them 2 McAvoy's. Between the two, they could cover 50-60 minutes a night. Both are capable of turning a traffic cone as a partner into an elite pairing. He would cost a lot of money, but that is one thing they do have as an asset to weaponize. It would also free them up to use Carlo as a trade chip for help elsewhere.

I'm not sure how the Bruins FO feels about him. IIRC, they were pretty cordial about the way it ended in 2015. I'm sure the analytics team loves him. It's probably not a knock on him, but I'm sure some people see 3 teams in 9 years as a red flag. Players of his stature don't change teams often. He also wanted out 6-years ago, which is problematic if he has no interest in ever coming back.

I'd be surprised if he wanted to come back. Who knows what's true and whats just damage control but the widely accepted chronology of his trade is he had no interest in signing here and his agent wouldnt return Sweeney's calls, so they traded him. Losing him was stupid and hurt a lot so I'd love to have him come back but I can't see it.

I did some digging on possible LHD trade candidates that I think could help. If only the bruins had assets to trade

Lindholm - 1 year left, injury issues the last 2 seasons, 27 yo - he's a legit top pair guy and would be perfect with McAvoy. His next contract does not align with Anaheims future window at all and given the dearth of LHD on the market, this would be a smart offseason to move him. Unfortunately all of those reasons probably make him too expensive for Boston.

Schmidt - previously mentioned in this thead - $5.9 for 4 more. Versatile LHD, I like him and the Canucks have a lot of cap issues

Eckholm - I don't really see this as an option because he's likely going to seattle and will be moved at the deadline for a 1st and a prospect, but he's a really good all around LHD who will be UFA next offseason

Vince Dunn - probably the same story as Eckholm though he's an RFA. I'd love to trade for him but he will probably be Kraken property

Nurse - almost pointless to mention him but he's a UFA after next year. If he asks out of EDM he's be a hot commodity that the Bruins couldn't afford. Dream McAvoy partner though.

Lindell - they love him in Dallas and he's signed for 4 more years but things are getting expensive there. Not much cap room and Heiskanen to sign this year and Klingberg next. Might not be room for 3 $6+ mil blueliners?

Hanifin - long beloved by Sweeney - I expect the flames to look a lot different next season.

Gostisbehere - He'd definitely be cheap. Downside is he sucks. But, I don't think he sucks as bad as his reputation and might be a sleeper to have value playing in a more structured system.....if he is capable of that (he's probably not).

Calvin De Haan - UFA after next year...kinda league average - meh

Brayden McNabb - Vegas has major cap problems and I expect some movement there. He's a 30 yo UFA to be. Big, mean - pretty mobile for his size and really good underlying numbers. Buyer beware though, he plays with Theodore.

Nick Leddy - UFA to be, pretty fast, not that good - would be cheap though? Isles have major cap issues and have Sorokin, Pelech and Beauvillier to sign. I'd expect Leddy gets moved for not very much.

Dumolin - Pitt has some pretty serious cap issues as well and Dumoulin is someone it would make sense for them to move. He's been a big part of that team for a while though o you wonder if sentiment keeps him there. Also would they trade with Boston?

Not all that hopeful. The guy's I'd really want (lindholm, Hanifin, Nurse) are likely too expensive and that second/third tier group is kinda meh.

The Flames might be interesting. They have a little bit of an expansion draft squeeze coming. They probably have to go 7F, 3D. At F it is Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Lindholm, Monahan, Lucic (NMC), Backlund, Mangiapane, Dube in the conversation. That's 8 but they could get Lucic to waive, I'd imagine. On D they probably have 4 protectable players, Giordano, Andersson, Hanifin, Tanev.

I think one of Giordano or Hanifin goes. I read some of the Athletic Calgary's stuff and it seems they think Giordano could be exposed. He's old (37) but only has a year left at $6.75 million AAV, but was decent last year. Played almost 23 minutes a night and posted a 54% xGF% and a 56% actual GF%. Might not be a bad stop gap for a year. He does have a modified NTC where he gives the Flames a 19 team OK list. No clue if Boston would be one of the 12 no's. If they feel nostalgic, they could keep the captain and trade Hanifin.

Again, these pre-expansion draft trades are kind of hard to pull off so it might be a long shot. The Bruins would either have to go 8 skaters to protect McAvoy, Hanifin/Giordano, Grzelyck, Carlo and leave Smith and DeBrusk exposed as F's, or stick to 7F and 3D structure and risk losing Carlo for nothing. Or try and deal Carlo in a separate pre-draft deal. They can't really send Carlo back to Calgary as part of the deal because that puts Calgary in the same position they were in- too many D to protect. They'd have to find someone who can offer futures and has a protection slot available.

The consensus is that the BU position puts him a step closer to a head coaching job, probably NCAA or possibly AHL. IOW, it’s not strictly a lateral move.
I'd bring David Quinn in to replace Pandolfo. He did a pretty good job with the Rangers and developed a lot of their young talent into good NHL players(hello, 23 year old Norris Trophy winner Adam Fox). He coached McAvoy and Grz in college.

While the titles are not exactly the same, my understanding was that they were functionally similar. He's an assistant coach, directly under the head coach, in both places, right? Or does the college job come with a bigger responsibility set that lends him to career growth?

I would say no great loss, but it always seemed as if the media had a much better impression of his "game" than the coaching staff, who rightfully let him watch most games from the top floor.

Coyle had surgery to repair an "avulsion fracture" in his kneecap and a partial patellar tendon tear. Could explain why he took a step back this season from what we expected to see, but it's unclear on when it happened.

Yikes - the internet is saying 6 months for recovery, a year before someone feels like they are 100%. Anyone know an ortho?

So what you’re saying is, he may be able to play in January, but probably best to hold him out until mid April?

Obviously I’d rather he be healthy in October, but using his $5 million in the offseason then getting him back for the playoffs might work out ok.

Fluto's article said he would be ready by training camp.

https://theathletic.com/2694197/2021/07/08/charlie-coyle-feels-so-much-better-already-after-knee-surgery-what-can-the-bruins-expect-from-him-next-season/

The Bruins’ No. 3 center, according to agents Bob Norton and Glen Giovanucci, is recovering from recent surgery to repair an avulsion fracture in his left kneecap and a small tear of the patellar tendon. Coyle is expected to be ready for training camp in September.

Good news. Return of the coyle that graded out as the leagues best third line center before the league started is essential. It was a huge strength for the bruins that completely left them when his play suffered. It’s good to know he was playing hurt and hopefully recovers his previous form. His line is a big reason they lost to the islanders.

BU is not happy with their current HC (who replaced Quinn), who has one year left on his deal. (Pandolfo applied but didn't have his degree back then.) The assumption is Pandolfo is next in line, and just learning the ropes, which is why he'd make the step down to assistant.

The Blues Athletic writer has the Bruins as a Tarasenko possibility:

https://theathletic.com/2698518/2021/07/12/vladimir-tarasenko-trade-packages-what-the-rangers-islanders-knights-bruins-and-flyers-could-offer-the-blues/

In conversations the past few days with sources familiar with Tarasenko’s list, we’ve come up with five teams that could be trade possibilities: the New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Vegas Golden Knights, Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers.
They to on to hypothesize on potential trade packages from each of those 5 teams. For the Bruins they came up with Frederic and a 2021 first. The Blues writer does admit that a trade would be done yesterday if that was offered to STL.

I think the acquisition cost would be substantially lower, maybe not even as much as the 2nd and Bjork that the Bruins gave up for Hall. It's risky, but something I would explore. My main hesitancy is him having 2-years left. They have McAvoy to re-sign after this season and the FA class is a lot stronger in 2022, so having cap space next offseason could open some doors.

Sounds like a wonderful environment. The HC on thin ice and his potential successor hired as an assistant.

The only thing making this a risk is the health of the shoulder. If Boston's doctors get ahold of the medical records, put him through a physical as part of the trade, and are confident that the latest surgery fixed the issues he had with it then I'd feel a lot more comfortable making this move. I'd be inclined to give up more in prospects or picks if the Blues would retain a bigger portion of the money as well. If they could roll out the first line and then still have enough cash to make Hall-Krejci-Tarasenko work as the 2nd. Then, you can bring in a LW to play with Coyle and Smith on the 3rd line and another LW to play with Lazar and Wagner on the 4th line.

Still think it's a problem they can solve when the time comes; Tarasenko has $5.5m due to him in 2022-23 with his $7.5m hit, so if the Bruins needed to clear space for McAvoy they could rent him for a year (paying $9.5m on a $7.5m cap hit) and ship him out to a cap floor team if the space is needed.

It could get dicey if he doesn't regain form and/or retains the NTC. Technically the NTC goes away once you waive it once but the player can negotiate it back in as terms for waiving it in the first place. If he stays injured then it's a hefty LTIR number for them to use or deal to Tampa/Taranna.

It's not without risk, but he was so good as recently as 2-years ago that I'd take a chance if the medical staff is comfortable with their review. One way to compensate for the older, declining centers is to load up on the wings. I think he'd fit as a shooter for either Krejci/Hall or Coyle.

When he was on the ice, Miller was a warrior. Dude was tough as hell. Unfortunately he could never make it a full season without suffering some kind of injury which kind of defined who he was.

Several posters suggested that this might be it when his knee started acting up after about 20 games. No doubt he gave it all he had left.
I think his contribution can be measured some by the fact that he was missed in the 2019 Finals & again in this year's playoffs.

This was my first thought as well. He was frustrating to watch early in his career, but never stopped working and turned himself into a very good 2nd line defenseman who contributed a lot to the team. I honestly think they win the Cup easily in 2019 if he is healthy.

Is that guy a reliable source? If so, at $5.5m AAV, I have to think it's a discussion over 6 vs. 8 years. There's no way he's taking that little for 3 or 4.

He really, really improved his level of play over his career as well. It’s a shame it coincided with his physical decline.

That'd be good news, but I assume they won't actually sign it until the end of next week for expansion purposes. Unless they have a taker for DeBrusk lined up or they're OK leaving Smith exposed.

Hall said he only cared about winning then signed with one of the worst teams in hockey (which then promptly became the worst team in hockey). Fully prepared to be disappointed here, and I'm not sure what the plan B would be. I don't think you can then just run it back by resigning Krejci/Rask and crossing your fingers with another Smith-like "fine but not moving any needles" type of signing.

I think the deal is done, and the comments against it are just to push back on the "deal is done" stuff so there are no issues regarding the expansion draft.

I suspect he signs a deal within a week of the expansion draft. If not, then we can worry.

We'll see. I don't think it's a slam dunk he's back.

I think Krejci is the lynch pin to the offseason. I think that's kind of the fork in the road for the team. If Krejci comes back, I think they try to bring the band back together as best they can. If Krejci leaves, they may take a different approach. Hall may be part of the fallout if Krejci leaves.

If Krejci leaves and Hall takes a discount, can't they go after Landeskog and put him at 2LC?

Landeskog hasn't really played center since he was back in Sweden. It wouldn't make sense to me to sign him to the kind of money he will want and then ask him to play a different position than hes' played in the NHL and pin all their second line hopes on him.

He's also going to cost like $9 million AAV and there's a lot of tread on that tire. Plus the age old question of how good he'd be away from MacKinnon.

You can get Philip Danault for less than Landeskog, and while he won’t be as talented as Krejci offensively, pairing him with Hall would certainly make for a defensively responsible and offensively talented second line.
