Mirtle did a breakdown of every teams cap situation today. He estimates the Bruins have around $3.5 million left after factoring in $4 million for DeBrusk and trimming down to a 23-man roster.

He has them in the "room to deal" category, but I think we're likely looking at a Chara signing and then entering the year with $2 million in cap space

Arguably, all four of Boston’s “Mt. Rushmore” of sports are Trump guys (or would be, depending on how you want to view Teddy Ballgame past/present tense)

Teddy fought for the guy in my avatar to be recognized by the Hall of Fame along with the rest of the Negro Leagues, and was himself Hispanic. I prefer to believe that he would have come down on the right side of history.

And much as I loved Larry Bird as a player, I've got Bill Russell on my Mount Rushmore. And I hope that Larry, having played in the most diverse of leagues, would also not support 45.

That’s why I said “arguably”. Fair enough on Bird/Russell, but that’s part of the arguable part. And I thought I recall Teddy being a big Bush supporter?

I merely found the concept interesting. I’m a “root for the name on front of jersey” guy myself

The Providence Bruins have worn gold as their primary home jersey since 2013, although the B's look a little lighter. I always thought it was a great jersey. They also wear a gold helmet, which doesn't work nearly as well.

Hurricanes, Kings, Avs and (sadly) Habs jerseys are awesome. I also like the Rangers, Wild and Ducks.

Most of them are just ok like the Bruins.

Vegas, CBJ, Flames, AZ and Detroit are embarrassing and look like they are from ECHL teams.

The Avs ones are by far the best. I'm debating getting one of my own, they're so good.

With DeBrusk signed, I think we're essentially done for the offseason. The only real question mark is Chara.

Marchand - Bergeron - Pastrnak
DeBrusk - Krejci - Kase
Bjork - Coyle - Smith
Ritchie - Kuraly - Wagner
Lindholm

Grzelyck - McAvoy
Moore - Carlo
Zboril - Clifton
Lauzon - Miller

Rask
Halak

That 23 man roster leaves them with $3.6 million in cap space. Enough for Chara, call ups/demotions, and banking space to be a player come the deadline. To get down to 23, I had to waive Blidh, Senysjyn, Kampfer, McKegg down to Providence. They will have additional flexibility from a roster standpoint due to the Marchand and Pastrnak injuries given both will likely be unavailable whenever this season does start. Also, they'd have to lose a D in the event Chara returns. None of the 8 I have on the roster are exempt from waivers so it'd be waive/trade of one of them (Moore, Zboril, Lauzon, Miller, Clifton).

That’s an ugly NHL defense right there.
While I don’t think it could be a strength of the team by any means, I think it somewhat depends on which Carlo we see. If it’s Carlo from the 2019 playoffs, that’s a really different picture from Carlo in the 2020 playoffs, as I thought he was fantastic during the 2019 run, particularly against Columbus. They still need someone better than Gryz so they can slide him and Moore down a pairing, but I think the regression of Carlo last year, particularly in the bubble was a major issue as well.

Is everyone counting Vaakanainen out? Won't he be given a shot to stick?
I didn't have him on my roster because he's waivers exempt, so from a roster management standpoint it probably makes more sense to give Zboril (needs waivers) first dibs.

Anyways, Dom L wrote an article advocating for the Bruins to offer sheet Sergachev. The article is outdated since it was posted yesterday prior to the DeBrusk signing. Even with the DeBrusk signing, it's still probably doable, I've mentioned it before, but it makes so much sense for the Bruins to do it. There's very little downside. They either get the player (improves them; hurts Tampa) or at the very least it fucks with Tampa's cap space. He thinks the offer sheet should be in the 3-year, $6.54 AAV range. That's the first and third round pick compensation. For Tampa, it'd put them $3.6 million over the cap, if matched, while still having to deal with Cirelli and Cernak.

With DeBrusk signed, the Bruins would likely have to move $3 million to make it work but they could go over and work it out between now and the beginning of the season. Of course, offer sheets aren't a thing in the NHL, and it also requires the player being willing to sign one. Who knows if Sergachev would actually do so.

He will sign an offer sheet if it's more than what Tampa offers.

Unless he's willing to take less to stay in Tampa. Florida income tax plays a role here too.
It sure does. If he wants a smaller deal because it stretches further in Florida, more power to him. Hedman($7.875 million through 24-25) and McDonagh($6.75 million through 25-26) are both signed long term for big money. Hedman will always be the top pairing LD, so maybe he wants to go somewhere where he can be a #1 LD. Sergachev is really good and really young, but how many more big contracts can they afford long-term? They certainly could do a bridge deal and try to unload some contracts, but this may be their opportunity to add draft capital and try and get more young, cheap talent so they have some flexibility to spend a bit in the next few years. In addition to the two guys I mentioned they have Vasilevskiy at $9.5 million through 26-27, Kucherov until 26-27 at $9.5 million, Stamkos through 23-24 at $8.5 million, Gourde through 24-25 at $5.16 million and Killorn for the next 3 seasons at $4.45 million. Tyler Johnson is currently off their books, but he's signed at $5 million for the next 4 seasons too.

Their problem is they have too many good players. I don't think they really have a bad contract. Maybe Johnson, but he's still a 40-45 point center at $5 million which is fairly reasonable. He is still on their books, they waived him at the start of free agency but went unclaimed so they're pretty much stuck with that cap hit. They can waive him again and send him to the AHL if they want when the season starts but that would only save them about $1 million against the cap.

I think Tampa's biggest problem right now is no trade protection. Everyone has some kind of no trade. Stamkos, Kucherov, Hedman, McDonagh, Palat, Gourde and Johnson all have full no-trades for this season. Killorn has a partial no-trade(16 team no list). If the players aren't willing to budge on the no-trades, then they're in a jam. It seems that's been the case for at least 2 players, Stamkos and Johnson. From what's been reported, they did approach Stamkos about a move. Not sure if anyone else was OK'd, but it seemed like Vegas was the only realistic option for him. He took less to stay in Tampa due to the tax and location, so he was going to flex the NMC. Johnson had a pretty small group of teams he'd OK, and being waived may have scared him into loosening up and adding more teams, but 2 months later and he's still there.

Tampa has $2.9 million in space at the moment. If they can clear Killorn off, that brings them up to $7.5 million. I don't think that's enough for Sergachev, Cirelli and Cernak. Probably need to move another bigger salary or a few lower level guys like Coleman and Goodrow.

They are so ripe for an offer sheet but GM's are babies.

I do agree that the big deals they have on the books aren't bad contracts, but they still tie up the cap and restrict how much else they can do. It's a testament to how great Tampa has been in filtering in either younger players who came up through the system or getting veterans to come in and play for cheap and seamlessly fit in. If they are able to move Stamkos, that changes the game.

Jesus, Murphy and Haggerty have a subscription site now? And people actually pay to read them? The mind reels.

"Jesus, Murphy and Haggerty...." sounds like the beginning of a joke. Which I suppose it is.
