Heh Hathaway is a prick and a half. But he’s now OUR prick and a half. :)
Me and my son were cracking up when I told him…last week we were talking about how much we hated Hathaway, and when I told him after his practice today he rolled his eyes, said “god I hate him, but I think I’m going to love him on the Bruins”

Love the trade. As an aside, is Garnet Hathaway the least “hockey” name ever? I picture an ascot-wearing, gin and tonic-swilling scion of some old-money Northeast family.

This is the kind of move that makes all of Sweeney and Neely's comments after the playoffs last year make so much sense. Getting guys who make us hard to beat in best of 7 series.....

Really impressive they add two quality players and increase cap room by 350k. Guessing that helps activate Nosek?

The Bruins are absolutely not going to be pushed around by anyone in the playoffs this year. Adding Orlov and Hathaway is adding a TON of physicality to a roster that was already much better in that regard than some of our recent squads, and the skill level gets knocked even higher. Holy hell, this team is going to be such a nightmare squad to gameplan against.

Sweeney is meh at drafting but plenty of GMs are meh at trades too; he has been so good at leveraging the thing he is meh at to support the thing he is great at.

Also have to love the secrecy. It’s not like Chiarelli* playing footsie with Toronto over Kaberle for what felt like years as the obvious trade to make.

*To be fair to Chiarelli, the first thing I thought of here was to be reminded of the Kelly/Peverly deals which felt out of nowhere but fit really well.
,
I don't want to take this tangent too far, but from this season's roster, Sweeney has drafted DeBrusk, Carlo, McAvoy, Frederic, Swayman, and Zboril.

But, yes, trade deadline Don is like playoff Tito, and it will be interesting to see among he and Brad Stevens who will be the next to actually draft a player in the first round. As in past trades, he boldly took care of a need that will hopefully enable a deep playoff run.

Wonder if Jarmo is still sitting in his office waiting for Sweeney to call him back to finish the Gavrikov deal?

Even though Orlov is a top 4 guy (and #3 on this team), they can work it so that at least one of McAvoy, Lindholm, and Orlov is on the ice at all times.

Unless I'm forgetting someone, I believe that Hathaway will be the first Mainer to play for the Bruins since Eric Weinrich.

Although neither was actually born in Maine, both grew up there, so we can claim 'em.

That's almost assuredly true, but their head coach and one of their goaltenders are "from" Maine, too. (Montgomery just missed overlapping with Weinrich at UMaine.)

Weinrich is only a few years older than me. I used to play youth hockey in Yarmouth, Maine as a kid and I remember seeing him skate a few times before or after my games/practices. He really stood out and I loved following his college and NHL careers.

Depending on which data source you're looking at, there is one other forward with over 500 minutes 5 on 5 who has possibly a lower OZ start percentage than Hathaway. They're both bottom 3 though, no matter which system you look at. And while this other player has scored fewer goals than Hathaway (7), he has more points (20).

The Bruins own Nick Foligno.

Interestingly, Foligno and Hathaway are the only 2 players among the lowest 20 forwards in OZ start percentage who also have expected goal percentages over 55%.

Is it safe to say you guys don't want Donnie fired anymore? ;) Well, at least not this week anyway.

Honestly? No, it's not fair at all to say that. Signing Mitchell Miller and then putting out whatever the hell that "report" was that has changed nothing is a stain that should not go away.

I was referring more to the off-season and Butch firing threads that gave me a chuckle as a re-read them last week (I had surgery for a torn Achilles tendon and am laid up for a while). I fully agree the Miller thing was a disaster, but am not sure Donny deserves the lions share of the blame for it. Maybe you know more than I do, though.

Anyway, there were a shitload of really bad takes in both of those threads. My comment was a harmless jab at them. Deserved, imo.

It's tough - because there is something wrong with this combined leadership group. Between the drafting, and the whole Mitchell Miller fiasco - there's some pretty unforgivable transgressions.

But when it comes to trades, and retaining current players at team friendly deals - they're elite (opinion subject to change if they don't sign Pasta).

He deserves credit for the team he put together this year which has performed well beyond anyone's rosiest expectations. There was a lot to fix and he did it. His trades have been great the last couple of years. However, the Miller situation can't be forgotten and his drafting history hasn't been the greatest although JDB's resurgence has helped to try to save that '15 first round.

Hope your rehab goes well with the Achilles. That is a tough road.

Meanwhile, there's several people here (one of you, in fact) clamoring for the team to bring in Patrick Kane. You know, the guy with multiple sexual assault allegations and multiple rape allegations. The guy that punched a cab driver over 20 cents. The guy that was heard drunkenly uttering anti-semitic slurs.

Seems like timing is everything. Maybe if Don had brought Miller in now - during the heat of a clear championship push - we'd turn more of a blind eye to his transgressions. Either way, I guess its easy to see how the fan base is sending mixed messages when it comes to their morals/ethics vs winning.

I must have my head buried in the sand as I had no idea Kane is a shitty, shitty person.

KFP, what info do you have that I do not?

If what you say is true, I retract my desire to see Kane skate on this team.

He had one sexual assault allegation that he wasn't charged for and the accuser's mother stated was a hoax. I cannot find other accusations other than he used to sleep around a bunch in his younger days.

Those of us who have asked for increased physicality and noted the MASH unit the team has resembled in the playoffs are certainly getting our wish. Turns out there actually are ways to do that without just grabbing a traffic cone goon. We’ll see how well it translates.

The cab driver assault was a thing and easily google-able. Anyone from the hockey community in Buffalo when he was growing up* will tell you he was a prima donna shithead. Maybe he's changed, maybe not. Either way, he's a hell of a hockey player.

* Small sample alert

For what it's worth - both rape cases were dropped due to seemingly overwhelming evidence that he did not, in fact, commit rape.

View: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2584179-patrick-kane-under-investigation-for-rape-latest-details-comments-reaction

In a two-page statement, the veteran prosecutor struck a remarkable tone for the 3-month-old rape investigation as he outlined what amounted to a strong defense for the hockey player and raised sharp doubts about the truthfulness of the woman's accusation.

It is rare to see prosecutors attack an allegation as Sedita did, especially given that he stopped short of accusing the woman of making a false report. Such an attack could deter other women from coming forward to report sex crimes, legal experts and rape victim advocates said. They believe Sedita, elected Tuesday as a New York state trial judge, released detailed findings to deflect criticism of his decision and blunt suggestions that Kane got special treatment because of his celebrity status.
As for the other incidents - the cab driver incident was legit and he apologized for it. Still a punk move. The anti-semetic comments? I don't know. Deadspin were the ones that reported that, and the people that claim he said it also said things like "he (Kane) drinks beer like a girl." Is it true? Maybe? But in the last 10 years he has been, by most accounts - an adult and a person who isn't the punk kid he most definitely was.

Wasn't the repeated refrain about Miller was that he had shown no contrition or ability to change? Is 10 years (or so) long enough time for someone to maybe be a different person than they were as an 18-21 year old?

There was the first rape claim from a woman in Buffalo. A few months later, there was as second rape claim in Los Angeles while he was there playing the Kings. In truth, I don't know enough about either of the claims details. Maybe they were both full of shit. I dunno.

But there has been plenty of smoke around Kane. Multiple people saying he was following women into the bathroom during the infamous Cinco De Mayo party he attended while at Wisconsin - neither of the aforementioned rape cases are tied to this event, but it was reported that he choked a woman (women?) that rejected his advances.

And that says nothing about the cab driver incident, or the multiple people who claimed they heard him dropping anti-semitic comments while drinking at a party.

Regardless, on one hand we have a young kid that did some really, shitty, awful bullying, apologized for it, owned up to it (who knows how contrite he really was, of course), said he'd try to use his mistakes as a foundation to help similar people to the ones he hurt...and on the other hand we have Patrick Kane. Who has never apologized, has continued to be a shithead, and seemingly went out of his way to shit on Kyle Beach for stepping forward about his sexual assault experience (or at the least, defended Bowman and minimized the situation until he was called out on it).

People can try to navigate the duality of morality however they want. But there are a lot of people who were pretty outspoken about Miller - and how that portrayed the front office - that seem to be more than OK with bringing in someone with a questionable background. The difference, of course, is that one of them is a former 100 point player, and the other one was a fringe roster player.

You could just say you were wrong about the multiple sexual assault and multiple rape allegations. I guess technically you were right but they were unfounded so hiding behind "Maybe they were both off shit. I dunno" is either pathetic or cowardice when it's a Google away.

Regarding the rest, I don't really care about the rest of the moralizing about Miller or Kane.

It doesn't sound like Kane has any interest in coming to Boston anyways, so I think all of this talk is moot. It sounds like it's NY, Dallas, or staying in Chicago.
There's no chance Kane's coming to Boston. Just can't see it. If they add a F, I have to think it's someone like Barbashev or Bjugstad.

I do remember that both Kane and Toews has pretty terrible responses to the Kyle Beech thing. Basically the complete opposite of how the bruins locker room responded to Mitchell Miller being brought in.

Both are UFA after the season. Caps weren’t winning this year. Trade helps both teams.
Resigning Hathaway seems possible — he says he grew up a Bruins fan — and desirable. Foligno and Nosek are also UFAs after this season.

Sweeney built this team’s depth with trades and signings rather than first-round drafts picks. Doesn’t seem like a bad idea to me. The first-round picks he’s traded have all ended up at the end of the first round.

2018 (Nash): #26
2020 (Kase): #27
2022 (Lindholm) #22

We all hope the 2023 pick traded to the Caps will be at #32.

I believe the 2018 pick was #28, Nils Lundkvist, who at 22 seems to have established himself as a decent third pair defenseman for the Stars.

2020: Jacob Perrault is still 20, but has not done much at the AHL level.

2022: Nathan Gaucher has been a point-per-game player at the Q, but is only 19 and is probably still a few years away from having an impact at the NHL level.

tl;dr version is that there doesn't seem to be any "why couldn't we get players like that" among those 3 draft picks.

They don't need anything else. The chemistry on this team is off the charts. Let it ride
I think they could use another forward. Not a big name, top 6 dude, but a veteran depth forward. Greer is the 13th F but 14 and on is the Providence players. Another veteran with playoff experience for the bottom 6 I think would interest them. Someone in the mold of the Tommy Wingels acquisition several years ago.

They are 10 deep on defense, including Stralman. Mike Reilly has a trade request in. I think it makes a lot of sense for the Bruins to try and move him out, so I think that is still in play. If they can't find a deal to their liking he'll be a black ace but I think that's one that could happen between now and next Friday.

Ideally a forward that who can ride with Coyle & Hall but I doubt it is possible at this point. They like Nosek so a 4th line of Frederic, Hathaway and Foligno doesn't seem possible.

Jeez, I don't even want to go back and read my takes on the Cassidy firing with the benefit of hindsight.

Every point DeBrusk puts up reminds me again of how little we actually know about what's going on in the room.
