I think Nosek will slot back on the 4th line, but a 4th line of Hathaway, Foligno, and Frederic will be like playing against a meat grinder. Shades of the Merlot line.

Sweeney is meh at drafting but plenty of GMs are meh at trades too; he has been so good at leveraging the thing he is meh at to support the thing he is great at.

Also have to love the secrecy. It’s not like Chiarelli* playing footsie with Toronto over Kaberle for what felt like years as the obvious trade to make.

*To be fair to Chiarelli, the first thing I thought of here was to be reminded of the Kelly/Peverly deals which felt out of nowhere but fit really well.

I might get Cliffy some reps at wing on one of those lines -- build more F depth. :)

Love this move - and I think it makes sense for both teams. Washington wasn't going to pay Orlov next year.

So the rumored cost of Gavrikov was 1+3 unsubsidized and Don traded a 1, future 2nd and future 3 for an equal Dman subsizided, quality 4th liner and got rid of Smith's contract. Safe to say that was a lot better that the rumor mill the last several days and once again all the trade smoke proved to be just that as this was completely out of the blue. Don has really been the top GM in the NHL the last 2 seasons going back to the Ullmark signing and I don't think there is a close 2nd.

Between here and everywhere.
I love, LOVE adding Hathaway.

He’s exactly the kind of guy you need in the playoffs to punish D get under other teams skin.

I absolutely HATED whenever the Bruins played him. Him on the Bruins though? Love it.

I feel the exact same way. Just a really hard player to play against, without necessarily being in the "dirty" category, but close enough that you hate him. I love it.

Agree. When the RedWings played the Caps I was telling my wife how he was a sneaky dirty player. He’s a bigger Marchand with the sneaky dirty play. Hated him when we played the Caps.
Now that he's donning the spoked B I'm gonna clear some space in my heart for him.

I’m trying to figure out if we just traded Casey Fossum for Curt Schilling or Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff‘s expiring contract and waiver wire detritus for Kevin Garnett.

Terrific trade by Trader Donnie. Orlov and Hathaway move the needle. Great pieces to add for the playoff run.

I always thought he went over the line at every opportunity. Not quite dirty, though, so glad he's our pain the ass.

And good for Smith. Maybe he can regain something for himself. And he doesn't have to worry about Neely slew-footing him to get him to LTIR.

In the simulacrum
I feel bad for Smith. I really do.

It has to be tough to be the guy on the other side of a trade like this, especially when you are not young, looking at a narrative where they tell you that you are going to build the other franchise.

A top 4 D and a pest with skills for the 4th line and PK? For a late 1st, a bag of pucks, and the corpse of Craig Smith?

Perfect.

Like, this is absolute insanity, on the level of "The Caps GM is a Bruins fan" levels of absurd, to me.
For real. Does Sweeney have blackmail material on the Caps org?

This is some astounding creativity on his part. He got clear upgrades while ADDING depth and (a little) more cap space. Dealer Donny indeed.
