Nathaniel Hackett finishes with just 15 games coached in Denver, the seventh-shortest head coaching tenure in NFL history.
Not after yesterday. The team was humiliated in spectacular fashion on Christmas day in a solo time window. Can’t fire Russ, this was inevitable.
Figured they’d wait til the end of the season at this point, but I guess what’s the difference.
That’s a weird list
It's always going to be fun seeing Belichick on the top of that list, but did he ever actually take any action (other than resigning) as the HC of the Jets (such as meeting with coaches, players or ownership)? More of an annulment than a divorce. That’s a weird list
the two shortest tenures are by two of the greatest coaches of all time
this is a feather in Hackett’s hat
Everyone forgets that he was actually HC of the NYJ twice. It's always going to be fun seeing Belichick on the top of that list, but did he ever actually take any action (other than resigning) as the HC of the Jets (such as meeting with coaches, players or ownership)? Spent a lot of time with BB?Mayo has been a defensive assistant coach for what, 3 years? What makes him qualified to be a head coach?
Russ is an expiring asset though.I am not bringing in a linebacker coach to try to salvage Russ.
iI’s not clear to me that a coach that could salvage Russ forsakes the rest of the roster.Russ is an expiring asset though.
probably better to salvage the rest of the roster, that’s has a longer shelf life.
and a defensive coach, especially with no experience, may be more likely to let the Oc/qB coach do their work
I don’t think Payton would touch the Denver situation with a 10-foot pole. He is a QB guru who can probably see that Wilson has looked like toast and is locked up for another 4 years. He also has reportedly put together some semblance of a staff already, with Vic Fangio being his DC — I would highly doubt Fangio would want to go back to Denver. Payton will have his pick of situations — and will probably be patient and wait for the best possible situtation at QB to develop (Chargers?). I would be very surprised if he went to Denver."Mr (Sean) Payton? John Elway is on line 1.....and 2"
Well, you are ... he still gets paidNever like to see a man lose his job, but the Broncos D really let me down yesterday, so looks like me and Nate are both out some money.
He benefits from them not naming a D-Coordinator. So who do you credit on Defense, Steve Bellichick or Mayo? Bill generally refers to the two of them as leading the "Team effort" on D, and the Patriots have had a very good D the last few years without a lot of elite talent. Funny thing is Steve should get interviews too, but probably won't because he gets discounted for being Bill's kid.Mayo has been a defensive assistant coach for what, 3 years? What makes him qualified to be a head coach?
Nathaniel couldn’t HackettThe thread title should be changed to Hackett couldn’t hack it
Hi run game success as O-coordinator in BUF and JAX was impressive (passing... much more mixed).Hackett got the job after 2 years as the OC in GB, which I feel like is a bit misleading. Rodgers, like Brady, Manning, etc is basically his own OC. Hackett's resume before that was largely "meh" at best. Moreover, I seem to recall at the time the hire was largely designed to entice Rodgers to Denver, which obviously did not work out. That's my long way of saying that no, Hackett was probably not ready to be a head coach. But man... Russ did him no favors.
Hackett was hired by Denver because they thought he would get Rodgers to go to Denver, too. He didn't get Rodgers and he's not a head coach. So it ended in failure.Hackett got the job after 2 years as the OC in GB, which I feel like is a bit misleading. Rodgers, like Brady, Manning, etc is basically his own OC. He's throwing the coach under the bus to get a other yearGiven the 3 most important people below the owner (in some order) are GM, Head Coach and starting QB...
Seems hard to imagine the GM that oversaw this mess of a trade, QB contract extension, and HC hire/firing could possibly survive this.
I suppose, though if I'm the owner I'm not sure I let that person make the call on head coach #2.He's throwing the coach under the bus to get a other year
They can't cut Russ until 2025 without screwing their cap. Russ' extension doesn't even START until 2024. They theoretically could make him a post-June 1 cut in 2024, but they would still have to spread almost $80 million in dead money over two years.I think the Broncos know that they are deeply fucked if Russ is cooked. Their next hire should be a head coach who is a superstar offensive mind who is willing to spend the off-season building a new playbook with Russ. You give those guys a season to figure it out, and if Russ still looks like this by the end of next season, you cut Russ loose, trade everyone with value, and start over.
That means no Payton unless he's willing to stick around for a rebuild if he can't fix Russ.
Indeed. 2025 doesn't work out too well either as Russ' 2025 salary ($37M) becomes fully guaranteed if Wilson is on the roster after the 4th day of the 2024 league year. So yes, they will have some tough decisions if Wilson looks cooked again next year but wants to keep playing. They can't cut Russ until 2025 without screwing their cap. Does it work that way? Will BB hire Hackett knowing that Denver is paying his salary?
IIRC correctly, this is why Patricia and/or Judge don't have a coordinator tag. The bulk of their money comes from the Lions and GiantsDoes it work that way?
I understand that if the Pats hire him they pay him and if his old salary with Denver was higher the Broncos must pay him the difference.
I do not think coaches get hired under the DFA pronciples of being paid the minimum.
But I think they'll just have to bite that bullet. Bad Russ seems to be killing the team on and off the field. If he still looks cooked in a year, they just need to take the cap hit and start over. Hopefully they can uncover a Brock Purdy or Bailey Zappe late in the draft who can make the offense passable while that defense is still decent. They can't cut Russ until 2025 without screwing their cap. Wait so only certain salary is mitigated? Or are they hired under a "lower tier job" that gets paid less so the other team compensates?IIRC correctly, this is why Patricia and/or Judge don't have a coordinator tag. The bulk of their money comes from the Lions and Giants
Itr's murky, but the gist is that there's a pay level for those with coordinator titles, so the Patriots cut costs on the coaching staff (and probably allocate them elsewhere), but not naming them coordinators since the former teams are still paying themWait so only certain salary is mitigated? Condoleezza Rice will be part of the Broncos search for their head coach
Well i bet she can't do much worse than current Bronco Management, who ever it was who brought in Wilson cough "Elway" should of been the one who was fired!View: https://twitter.com/ZacStevensDNVR/status/1607790037139329025

Allocate them elsewhere is BB’s salary. As he is the highest paid coach at 20 million. Maybe it’s no longer true, but earlier in the season I think I read the Patriots had the smallest coaching staff in the NFL. I wouldn’t care except for the fact that the team this year really looks like a poorly coached team with delay of game penalties and unnecessary time outs and other unforced errors that I think have been uncharacteristic of the Patriot Way.Itr's murky, but the gist is that there's a pay level for those with coordinator titles, so the Patriots cut costs on the coaching staff (and probably allocate them elsewhere), but not naming them coordinators since the former teams are still paying them

I thought they didn't use the coordinator tag to evade the Rooney rule.
