I hated Elway as a player. I hate him so much more as an executive. What a smarmy, self-important jackass.

Love how Elway just opened his press conference by thanking HIMSELF. Nice going you muzzle mouth breathing motherfucker.

Because he looks like a horse.  ROASTED.

Sadly I remember the Steelers playing this against the Pats a few years ago. I don't remember the year (I'm guessing it was 2011) but it made it clear that the Pats had no one who could beat press coverage.

I think this is the game.

Data that can be pieced together from these tables suggests that the number of rollouts was relatively limited in 2013 with Schaub.  But his QBs do definitely spend a lot of time under center.  And its possible that some misdirection/boot plays don't get classified as rollouts because the QB is actually letting the ball go before getting outside the tackles.
They also were 2-14 that year and had to play from behind a lot, which limits how much you can use the kind of run action / bootleg stuff to keep defenses honest.

I'd love if he dropped "we've decided to part ways, "not too shabby" doesn't cut it here, we're in this to win Super Bowls not strive for pretty good"

Good point.  I looked for data from previous years but couldn't find anything in a quick search.

Apparently Elway wants Manning back and said he and Fox "disagreed about how to take the team to the next level". My first reaction is to think Fox may have wanted to move on from Peyton, while Elway wants to keep the crew together and take another shot.

Elway also thought the team hadn't shown enough fight in the past two playoff losses. I think that's a silly reason to can fox-sometimes you just get whipped and players can look lackadaisical when they're confused no matter how hard they're trying- but I'm thrilled to see who Elway hires to be a master motivator.

What about the loss before that?  Or the one before that?  They showed more fight losing to the Ravens and Pats?

My first reaction is Fox didn't appreciate Manning audibling out of all the running play calls so Manning could flutter ducks all over the field.

At least it would explain the complete abandonment of a very good running game.

Wasn't the book on Manning the last couple years that he'd audible to the run a ton if it was given to them and basically the Pats defensive game plan last year when they beat them in the regular season?

The bold is truth.

Marty was better than average - the original Cleveland teams in the 80s were really good, he was the only person to be competitive in Washington and his San Diego tenure produced above-average regular season results. He was a very good coach. But the bold keeps him out of the "great or better" conversation.

Like, is he better than Fox? Perhaps...perhaps not. Fox has two SB appearances but less of an overall track record.
Marty may well have been too conservative in CLE -- it's been so long I can't remember.  But by the time he got to San Diego, he was a broken old man -- like a dog who'd been whacked with the rolled up newspaper too many times.  Inside the NFL showed a clip of him before the 2007 playoff game against the Patriots giving one of the all-time awful motivational speeches.  Dude was cooked.

The twitters are rumbling that its Kubiak, which is a really curious hire and probably really good from the Pats perspective on two fronts

It seems like a lot of the sources reporting the Kubiak hire are now tracking back or the links are down.

In other news, I just learned from wikipedia that Kubiak's three sons are named Klint, Klay, and Klein. I wonder what their middle names are.

Klein was on the Rice football team, where he was teammates with Corey Frazier (Leslie's kid). So Rice had the sons of two NFL head coaches on the team, at least before they were fired for incompetence.

Jack Del Rio exits left to Oakland.

Gase apparently not the choice in SF after all.  He interviewed with Chicago and Atlanta a few weeks ago, so he may still be in the running for either or those jobs (and reportedly is under consideration by Denver too).
