Broken iPad: Replace screen or buy new?

I have an iPad 3 64GB VZW cellular with a cracked screen. The iPad otherwise works fine. I was quoted $140 to replace the screen by a local shop. Is that a good price?  Alternatively, is replacing the screen the way to go, or do Apple stores allow trade-ins and would if make more sense financially to do that, especially if I dropped down on memory on the new IPad? Thanks.

I have an iPad 2 64GB WiFi and I am 100% going with a replacement screen. It's basically a browser / VLC streamer for me (little gaming) so no need to shell out several hundreds for a new unit.

I've been quoted anywhere between $100 to $150, but it really depends on how much of the corners are dinged and if they need to bent them out. Also, I've heard some horror stories about a) using fake glass which cracks later b) bad craftsmanship that makes glass separate from the body c) improperly sealed glass that harbors fungus(?!).

I say go with a reputable shop even if it costs more.

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
After-market screens cost $25 and up.  There had been some very reputable shops on line that would replace the screen for $100 (not sure if that includes shipping).  Cool thing about having it replaced is you can get a color other than white or black.

A Lost Time
I was thinking the same thing about my used ipad mini the back cover of which i have scratched at several places.

My thinking went like this.

Selling my old ipad will net me 350 on Ebay. Buying the new model with the modest retina display upgrade will cost 730.

Fixing it will cost $100 or so.

Keeping the old ipad makes more sense then and I suspect your calculation will be similar unless the upgrade offers value for you.

Thanks -- the price for the local shop is consistent with i99repair and other online sites I've been to, so I think I'll stay local for the screen replacement. Fortunately, it's still usable now, so I'll make sure everything is backed up, then wipe it and re-install after I get it back.  Thanks again.
