BROCKHOLT: Actually, not better than a poke in the eye...

Our favorite jack-of-all-trades went on the IL in the second week of the season when he got jabbed in the eye by his young son and suffered a scratched cornea... that took a while to resolve itself, but when he finally started rehab games he was quickly greeted by a shoulder impingement and little has been heard from him since.

A few days ago, reports came out that he was finally ready to start rehab games and was going to be in the PawSox line-up Sunday... but lo and behold, no BROCKHOLT.

Anybody know what the hell is going on? On the bright side, his absence has opened a door for Chavis...but BROCKHOLT would be a preferable bench option to Nunez.

Eduardo Nunez, back-up shortstop, is not a phrase any of us are comfortable with, I imagine. Brock can't make it back soon enough for that reason alone.
Nunez isn't playing SS except in an emergency to finish out a game. If X goes down for any reason before Holt is back Lin will come up real quick.

Lin is on the IL himself (sprained knee, retro to 5/2 I believe) and has not resumed playing yet. I don't think we know the extent of his injury (some noises about it not being bad, but no word about him playing again). With Marco Hernandez not yet ready either, there is not another SS on the 40. Short of adding someone (Chatham would be cool but more likely a scrub like Mike Miller who is currently in Paw) to the 40 or picking someone up off the street, there is no back-up plan.

Edit: By the way, while checking in on Marco Hernandez (playing for Salem currently) I saw him getting robbed by the increasing encroachment of soccer onto the baseball field.

Yikes, I missed the Lin news. Stay well X.
There is room on the 40 man so yeah it would be Miller who could work in a pinch but that is still ugly.

I`d rather slide Devers to SS and Nunez to 3rd. Don`t let Devers be in the middle of a 4-6-3 DP. Tell the 2B to just get the out at 1B or Devers not to try and turn a close DP.

Not according to MLB.com there isn't
Damn they used to a couple of weeks ago, Joey Curletta took the last spot. They can make some spots if they need by DFAing someone named Josh. All I know is if something happens to X we won't see Nunez out there for an extended period of time, the man can't play 2B at a ML level.

Well, then maybe they should move Vasquez to SS in that case

Good chance that if they get into a situation where Nunez has to play SS that Holt, Pedroia, or Eovaldi could be put on the 60 day IL without them having to miss more time than they're going to miss anyway.

Yep I meant to add that, 40 man space can pretty much always be made available in season.

BROCKHOLT has finally seen some game action, batting second as a DH on Wednesday and Thursday and going 1-3 each time. It’s taking forever, but hopefully our long Nunez nightmare may soon be over...

This is the Red Sox. Remember? No way Nunez is going anywhere when Holt is healthy. They’ll just send Chavis down and damn the torpedoes.

Oh, I agree. It’s just that in recent memory the Sox have held onto roster guys when they are completely toast at the expense of rookies.

They like roster flexibility and they will certainly tend to send a guy down rather than DFA someone.
They also aren't dumb, unless Chavis craters he won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

When was the last instance of this? I only ask because that was a trait of the Theo and Cherington era, but I'm not convinced it's something that Dombrowski does.

I suspect Nunez will go back on the IL or a pitcher will get sent down when Holt is ready. Or both if they see fit to bring Pedroia back too.

Sandoval and Hanley, anyone?

I'd make a Jimmy Fund bet here that Chavis doesn't go down when Holt is back if coachster would like
I'm not going to take your wager, but I'm sending a quick $50 to the Jimmy Fund for my ignorance and stubbornness. Dombrowski has indeed made moves that were warranted when they had to be made. I'd like Holt back, because he'd allow us to keep JBJ on the bench and not employ JDM in the outfield, where he makes me sick. Let's hope they do the right thing and send Nunez elsewhere.

What young players were they blocking? Travis Shaw still played.

edit: I think that was your point, that they were released in favor of young players.
