Britt McHenry gets nasty with tow company employee, gets suspended

I'm sure she's been used to getting her way and everyone kissing her ass ever since she turned about 12.

Doubtless she treats people like this all the time, and this just happened to be the one that was caught on tape, and turned in after that poor employee was left crying or something.

Mean Girls 3, indeed.

To be fair, Advanced Towing have dozens of improper towing complaints against them and have been accused of harassing people who warn others that they're not allowed to park in a certain spot..  They tried to tow a car away just last week without cause and were interrupted by the kids they hadn't noticed sitting in the back seat asking them what the hell they were doing.

O.k. but she went after an employee, not the decision-makers and she went after the employee in a very personal way.

Oh, I'm not saying Britt isn't a terrible person.

If it weren't for seeing it here or maybe deadspin, what are the odds of you even having heard about this? She's not exactly a house hold name and she didn't kill someone.

Drudge gets 26 million page views a day.

It was just on the local news here in LA. And on CNN earlier. Hot chick berates fat chick over appearance and education? I'll be shocked if it's not on the morning talk shows tomorrow.

And how many viewers or drudge clickers knew who she was before this?

Hopefully I'm wrong and she is reduced to porn shoots in the valley for the next ten years. She did a pretty awful thing and deserves some karma for it.

All I'm saying is I don't think it will exactly be "Mel Gibson berating an officer during his DUI and ranting about Jews" level fallout. She's a blip during a slow news week and will go back to her post. In a couple months, no one will remember this.

Isn't she like a hot takes host and a mid afternoon Sportscenter anchor? She'll go back to being hot behind the desk and no one will care.
But the flip side of that is that she's very easy to replace. I don't at all like the "he/she has to be fired NOW" mentality spawned by the Internet and social media, but if this gets any kind of traction at all, she's toast.

Yell at a tow truck employee and insult her appearance/intelligence...1 week suspension.
Suggest on air that women provoke domestic violence and sexual assault...1 week suspension.
Intimate that a public figure might be lying to cover his ass and protect his brand...3 week suspension.

Yup, ESPN has got their priorities right.

Certainly not a good look, and it didn't take her long to issue an apology.  Is there any chance this video was edited to take out what, if anything, the worker was saying to her? Or was this just an unprovoked tirade that she went on?

These types of comparisons are always lazy.

Bill Simmons went on the air and did something that he was specifically told not to do and potentially compromised ESPN's journalistic standards (as they see it anyway).  The key is that he did this while he was on an ESPN show.

Britt McHenry did something that was far worse on a human scale, but did it in her personal life.

If I do a sloppy job with a report at work, I might get fired.  If I pick up a DUI, I would not get fired.   Does this mean that my employer thinks that in the scheme of life, summing the columns of a table incorrectly is a worse crime than DUI?

I can't imagine walking into a tow lot and not being super pissed off.  She certainly puts a nasty personal spin on it and gives off a strong odor of entitlement, no doubt.  But like Sumner said, those places can be awfully scummy.  I get why her dander was up.  If it's the type of place that would release that video just to get back at her, I have a hard time believing they were angels throughout this process.  It's not like she was screaming at an orphanage nun or Salvation Army bell-ringer.

I hear your point. But would you ever spew out this type of vitriol, no matter how angry you were? When I was young I had a terrible temper and my obnoxious mouth got me in awful situations, with police, coworkers, etc. But there is a huge difference between yelling "Fuck you, you're all scumbag assholes!", and belittling this woman's looks and education. I can understand an angry rant...maybe even sympathize, but her comments were a reflection of a a cruel, egomaniacal jerk, not just someone pissed off.

These aren't exactly capital offenses but obviously ESPN had to do something. Taking the temperature of the public outcry is probably the best way to do it.
I have trouble mustering up much outrage, but maybe that's from having worked with extremely douchey entitled bosses who can turn on the charm in a nanosecond.

I think it's more on par with the Mitch Williams berating an umpire thing, except Mitch isn't hot or intelligible, so it was a good excuse to suspend him indefinitely.

Oh sure, I'm not commending her or anything.  i mentioned that she comes off as nasty and entitled.  It's just the type of situation where you're going to see someone at their absolute worst, and I'm guessing that the people at that company aren't innocent cherubs who found themselves under attack despite all their best efforts to work nicely with Britt.  I mean, the fact that this video was released gives you a good indication of the professionalism and courtesy of the tow company.

Read their yelp reviews. Several of them specifically cite the woman behind the counter (not necessarily the same person, granted) as being extremely rude and insulting. You really think it's a coincidence that this video starts in the middle and is edited to only include McHenry's comments?

I find it adorable that some of you are bending over backwards to defend the pretty blonde.

EDIT: Defend is probably to strong a word but there is def some attempts to rationalize McHenry's exchange.

I find it amusing that you're gullible enough to believe the tow woman said, "Hi, how can I help you?" and McHenry responded by calling her a fat, uneducated loser.

See you're not thinking ahead. What if Britt:

1. Reads this thread
2. Uses her ESPN journalistic skills to put usernames to real-life names
3. Runs into one of the defenders out in the real world

Then, if you were smart enough to defend her honor, she'd no doubt bang you or at least give you a grateful handy.

You? You'll get nothing, and won't you be sorry!

The calls for firing her seems so drastic. I get that she is a public face, and as such is much more likely to be under some scrutiny or at the very least more recognizable when doing something incredibly stupid..but firing her? Really? She looks like a major ass to the entire world, isn't that enough?

Against my better judgment, I watched the vid. She doesn't seem like someone who "lost it" over getting towed.
[armchair psych] Her calm demeanor suggests to me that she has a lot of practice talking to people this way. [/armchair psych].
I never heard of her till now.

I could care less that it's a pretty blond. Having been in a Northern Virginia tow lot paying to get my legally parked yet still towed car out before I completely get where she's coming from.  And as has been mentioned, I'm certain that the woman not on camera is not beyond blame for the pretty little blonds nasty commentary.

Towing company is just the middle man, the person who decided to have it towed deserves the abuse. But yeah, everybody sucks, she just got caught on camera.

I can understand your exasperation but from the tow company's side there is this: Link

She parked her car and came back 2 hours after the establishment closed (meaning she was not a customer the whole time)..

By all accounts, this towing company is often plenty to blame. Multiple reports of the tow damaging the cars, absurd difficulty in getting the car backs, abuse by employees. None of that excuses the type of abuse she was lobbing, but that she was snapping on these people is understandable given the stacks of evidence that this particular company seems to only employ assholes.

See. I don't get this. This has also happened to me in N. Virginia - different tow company. So I called the police because I considered my car to have been stolen. The police show up at the lot and listen to both sides. The officer told the company to let the car go. Ultimately, there was no parking ticket associated with the tow so the police took my side. Of course, they didn't arrest anyone from the company for stealing my car, but getting it back and not having to pay for the retrieval was enough for me.

Yup, as an Arlington resident, I can attest that Advanced Towing is a horrible company.  I am pro-Britt on this.

How did you repress your desire to call a tow employee a fat, toothless, college dropout?

If you name your kid Brittany (or worse, Britt), there's like a 75% chance she ends up spewing verbal garbage at a tow truck employee in the middle of the night.

That's where I'm at.  I've been plenty pissed at tow truck employees and said dumb, angry shit, but none of it was on a personal level or meant to degrade them as humans.  If she'd said something about the employee's Jew nose it'd betray some underlying antisemitism.  The fact that she went after looks and education is telling.  "Fuck you, I'll burn this place down" is the appropriate response.

Yelp reviewers that had their cars towed had bad things to say about a tow company?
