I only put this here because of the potential that Brady might retire midseason. I think that's extremely unlikely, but certainly raises the possibility from 0 to something greater than 0.

“Gisele told Tom either he leaves football to spend time with the family or she is gone for good,” an insider exclusively reveals in the newest issue of Us Weekly.

I hope he figures it out with his family

I wouldn’t get your hopes up. The article gives no indication of when this ultimatum was made. In fact, I find it courteous that the author uses the past tense. It very well could be reporting just confirmed old news. Given the fact that they have divorce lawyers and are living separately without weeding rings, I think that’s most likely. My guess is his unexpected absence from training camp was his best effort to make a showing for his family while also honoring football commitments but it wasn’t enough.

Tom, you don’t need the money or the fane and this season isn’t going anywhere (even when you win the division)
Retire already

I don’t think so. Bucs have a laundry list of issues and I don’t see Brady as one of them.
Yeah, definitely. Brady’s been fine.

The Bucs interior OL is bad. Their rookie LG Luke Goedeke might be the worst starting OL in the NFL. Robert Hainsey is, at best, a mediocre C and probably a little worse than that. Brady has no trust in them and doesn’t want to get hit so he’s got happy feet and is short arming any longer route.

They can’t run the ball, the play calling is predictable and terrible. During the Carolina game, Jonathan Vilma was calling out every play before the snap.

The hope is that he and Godwin get back to their old ways with more practice time and that Gage Will get more acclimated as the season goes on. There’s also talk of Ryan Jensen coming back within the next 2 months which would be a huge boost.

Right now they are a bad team and they’re only still in the hunt for anything because the NFC South is putrid

Making me eat my words. He’s been inaccurate as hell tonight and is one of the main reasons they’re losing.

Sounds like Shaq Barrett - their best edge rusher - popped his Achilles.

On this note, I’m not sure that canning Leftwich would do much, but I wonder Bowles is gonna try to take over the defense out of desperation.
I’d imagine theyre going to give Leftwich another week. If they struggle to put up points against the Rams, I think he’s gone. He seem to have no creativity and doesn’t have the ability to adjust. His coaching stock has plummeted this year.

I’m not sure if Bowles taking over the defense does anything but it’s worth a shot. They’ve been ravaged by injury in the secondary and Devin white is one of the most overrated players in the NFL He has no idea where to go, is constantly out of position chasing big plays and is is an incredibly low IQ player. There was a play tonight where Lamar outflanked him to the sideline, ran for about 6 yards and got the 1st down. White brought him down, got up and celebrated as if he had just made a game winning play. A complete lack of awareness. I think if he was on the Patriots Belichick would strangle him.

First time 2 games under .500 since 1-3 in 2001 I believe, and the first two losses were Bledsoe’s. I don’t think he has ever been 2 games under .500 as a starting QB.

I haven’t been watching. Is Brady starting to show his age or is it mostly the rest of the team?

Feels a lot like 2019. His team is a mess but he also doesn’t seem mentally with it right now. Missing a lot of reads that he normally makes in his sleep.

He still seems totally capable and is making good plays/throws. More off than usual, but do you attribute that to him/his age or to that shit o-line? I say it's the latter and that seems to be the consensus opinion. They're dead last in some rush stats, which indicates the line struggles and also kills the play action.

O-Lines typically don't improve week over week.

Yeah they can't run the ball at all. I know he's won some huge games without being able to run the ball at all (e.g., Ravens 2014), but you can't win consistently with zero contribution from the running game.

They ran for 152 yards in the week 1 win over Dallas. Since then:
72 (W)
34 (L)
3 (L)
69 (W)
75 (L)
46 (L)
44 (L)

I mean, that's hideous. < 62 yards per game. 49 yards per game since the opener. That seems impossible.

This same thought kept recurring during last night’s second half. Playing through what looks very much like a lost season is a ridiculous price to pay.
Probably compounds itself too. He has always been an emotional player but he seems exceptionally frustrated this year.

The stakes in the NFL are always high, but if as reported Brady has paid an extra high price to play then everything is magnified. I don’t think “I gave up x for this” is a particularly productive thought to be having during games.

The defense looked especially awful too. Being single, away from his family, and no prospect of playing on a contending team until he is at least 46 has to be pretty rough.

Or maybe he only cares about the football. We just can’t know.

Ridiculous price to pay even if things were going well. I can't believe sacrificing your family life to try to grab that elusive 8th SB ring. We all get that's how the great ones are wired but, man, he is probably going to have some serious regrets soon, if he's not having them already.

That really sucks and I really wish people wouldn't keep referencing it anytime his team loses. Feels cruel to me.

Looks to me its totally over

Our sources say lawyers for both Gisele and Tom have been working with a mediator to hammer out both property settlement and custody, and we're told they have come to terms.

Our sources say the divorce document will be short ... the terms of the settlement will remain confidential and sealed.

This is totally worth losing a family over.
It's an aside but I wonder with a celebrity of Brady's level how much time does he actually spend with family. I'm not saying he doesn't love his family, but given that he has what is very close to an "every waking moment of every day" job from July 15-roughly Feb 1, and a full time job just doing football the other five months of the year plus all of the marketing, TB-12 stuff, under armour commercials, brand building, Met galas and derby parties, etc., and given the amount of support they likely have in terms of nannies?

I frankly bet that getting the divorce doesn't change the amount of time he spends with his kids that much

At least they avoided a long and drawn out mediation, which some were predicting, and both can move on. But it'll obviously be harder for a celeb couple to do so because the gossip rags will be all over it once one of them start dating again. Best of luck to Brady and hope his kids can manage through it. Will be extremely tough for them, obviously, given the profiles of their parents.

Maybe his marriage was failing and that's why he came back, and not the other way around.
Or perhaps a bit of both. I find it hard to believe/understand that he can throw away a supposedly happy marriage/family life for one 'extra' season of football, when he is set for life financially and is already the GOAT. Is it possible that Brady is an addict, that is addicted to his job, and considers the high of playing more important than his family?

One of Tom's superpowers has always been that he has elite competitiveness -- that he wants to win more than his peers and works harder. The two seasons where it seems like he had some off-field distractions--2019 and 2022--it seemed like his whole compete level was compromised.

I don't mean, BTW, that he "doesn't want to win" or anything -- but rather things like him doing less work with receivers (think: his sessions in Montana with Edelman and Amendola). I get that almost all of his receivers have missed games this year, that guys like Jones and Rudolph are new, and there's no Gronk. To my eyes, Brady doesn't look much different physically than he did in 2019, but his timing with his receivers is a mess. Has he generally had fewer reps with these guys? It certainly seems that way.

Ozymandias... something something...

The truth is we will never know how Brady's personal life transpired, and frankly it's none of my business to know or even care. I hope he takes care of his body and finances and doesn't "leave it all on the field".

That could definitely be the case. We have no idea, nor should we, what the overall health of their marriage was, and for how long, other than media gossip, the accuracy of which I wouldn’t bet the milk money on. But the narrative that an otherwise solid marriage completely imploded because he changed his mind about playing for another year has always seemed a little too simple, and on the nose to me.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to say that he should've just walked away two years ago after #7 (or even 4 years ago after #6). But, none of us will ever know what is happening behind closed doors. I just hate to think that his career might end on whimper with all this ugly personal news overshadowing the football stuff.

Pretty reasonable take...I don't purport to know what his or anyone's marriage is like. So there's no way I would try to take the temperature "there".

However, one thing is for certain; Brady has decided to forego fatherhood towards a (now teenage and high school aged) son who is participating in competitive sports --- in order to continue playing football.

That cannot be debated / needs background info.

I have a tough time making it as simple as "he gave up his marriage for this shitty football team". This has been his job, his passion, what drives him since, well, forever really right? Divorce lawyers have made oodles of money (we probably have a few here!) throughout history negotiating divorces of people at the pinnacle of their profession - CEOs, athletes, celebrities - who can't find that balance between family and their work or passion. You don't even need to be at the top level of anything for that to be the case though. I don't think it even has to be someone at the peak of their profession though. I'm sure there are many marriages where a discussion takes place where an ultimatum of "give up your passion or we're getting divorced" is given and then followed through.

Of course but welcome to the world of 2022.
People enjoy watching celebrities from the cheap seats and commenting, making half-assed judgments. It's what people do. We have no idea what happened with Kim and Kanye but people like to think they do.
The popular narrative from the outside looking in will be that Brady blew it with an ultra-rich super model, his family and kids are in tatters due to his ego and it was all to come back and look like dogshit for a bad team in prime time every week. It looks like a massive own goal from the outside. Is it as simple as that? Of course not and we'll likely know the full story but that's what it looks like and so most will go with that storyline for now until proven otherwise.
