Per Pete Abe:
Bradley to DL w/ sprained thumb. Marrero recalled

Ian Browne speculates that it'll be Benni to CF with Young and Holt splitting time in left

Damn... JBJ was really getting hot, and his defensive the last few weeks felt even more exceptional than usual.

Ugh. JBJ has been outstanding, and this one will hurt. Hopefully he's back in action and 100% in 10 days.

Marrero makes sense, but now Brock Holt is your reserve OFer while Chris Young gets valuable at bats in LF. Was really hoping for Brentz so they could see if he's finally figured it out.

Maybe it's time for Brock to go to the DL with a recurrence of dizziness. His hitting suggests that he isn't right.

Brentz isn't on the 40-man roster, thus, bringing up Brentz would require another move. DFAing Steve Selsky wouldn't make me cringe.

Defensively we shouldn't lose that much, at least. (This may be naive as JBJ seems like a transcendent defensive talent)

Was definitely sending him heat up at the plate again..., and when he launched that solo shot, I was pretty sure we were about to see him go on another 5-7 week long vintage Bonds-esque tear through the leagues.

Headfirst slides boys and girls. They need to start suspending people for doing it. With the value and expense of players today it's just a risk that should not be happening. I understand being aggressive on the basepaths but they can be aggressive without sliding headfirst. And...I do think he would have been out if he hadn't gone in headfirst but is that run worth 10 days on the DL for an important member of the lineup at this key point in the season?

Debatable calling what he did last night a slide!

Out of curiosity- is there an August waiver pickup out there anywhere who would be better than the status quo if JBJ has a significant injury?

It probably makes the most sense to ride out what they have until rosters expand on 9/1, and if JBJ needs more time (worthy of what a waiver pickup might warrant), I would assume they'd just plug in Brentz.

Gomes also arguably was blocking the baseline and caused the awkward slide, more than going headfirst.

That was an in the moment decision. He wasn't trying to slide that way, but his path got blocked late and it turned into that awkward hybrid feet first, but almost headfirst slide.
Gomes looked like he followed the path of the ball, but went out too far on it

We may be about to find out.

The Red Sox appear to be adding a player via trade or waiver claim. Stay tuned.

I'll put a dime on Leonys Martin, who got DFA'd yesterday: competent CF who's struggled with the bat this year.

The annoying part is that JBJ is a streak hitter and he was just getting going on his latest uptick.

Martin's track record is all dWAR and base-stealing, maybe that makes him a reasonable pinch runner/fielder in September? He has never really hit, no full season of OPS+ over 100 and several well below. But in expanded rosters he maybe has a place.

LOL at the twitter folks assuming this means Dombrowski's acquiring Stanton or Cespedes.

edit: with apologies to The Shyness Clinic.

The wrong side of the bridge....
Bleh. What does he do better than Martin, exactly? Hope we didn't give up anything of consequence.
You mean other than hit* and run the bases**? Martin is the better defensive CF of the two, but Davis is still decent, and I think the Sox were smart to go for the veteran all-rounder rather than the one-trick pony. (It certainly worked in the infield.)

*Yes, Davis is not a good hitter anymore, but Martin has never been a good hitter, and now he's worse than that.
**Yes, Martin is fast, but Davis is faster--even now, according to FG--and has gotten better baserunning marks as well.

I feel like the All Star Break always fell a day or two after Trot Nixon got going.
