I think it’s fine if everyone is reasonable and reconizes how often NBA GM’s get it wrong with much more info than we have. I liked Jahlil Okafor lol.

Edit: Marvin Freakin Bagley too!
Yea, I've been guilty of liking the idea of drafting college BIGs several times. BUT what's the point when Brad can get seasoned BIGs, like Kornet & Tillman on short-term minimums along with Queta for free?

I'm much happier with Brad consolidating players & stapling a 1st to it in trades to upgrade the roster. Just add a 2nd round lottery ticket to Maine so people can have a young binky to dream on.

In case anyone was unaware, Calipari is out at Kentucky and I've seen Brad's name in a couple of articles. Unsure if he has any desire to leave the NBA, but it's Kentucky. So I don't think we can just dismiss it out of hand. I am 1% scared.

I’m not into advanced NBA stats but talk about out with the old (Grant, Smart, Rob & Brogdon) and in the the new (Jrue, KP + PT for Pritchard and Hauser) but if there was a WAR stat in the NBA I’d have t believe that the “out” 4 put up a negative WAR for the season and the “in” 4 have knocked down the door on their way to extremely positive WAR seasons for each.

I don’t see why Stevens would leave a high profile POBOS position for any NCAA coaching role, even if Kentucky. Plus all the NIL stuff has made NCAA coaching jobs much less desirable these days.

1% seems about right.

He's perhaps the best/proven college basketball coach who is theoretically available. So I wouldn't be surprised if there were a call to check on him.

I'd be pretty surprised if it was a long call or there were a second call, though...

That's the right way to look at it. You could even throw 4.5 extra minutes & a bigger role for Derrick White into your equation.

Brad didn't just heist the Wizards, Memphis, & PDX, his follow-up roster adjustments have been huge wins.

edit: You could look at WAR, VORP, BPM or DARKO curves to do a comparison. The upgraded #s would be off the charts

Kentucky doesn't have many options. I wouldn't be shocked if a massive deal ($100MM for 5-6yrs???) was offered to Brad.

His daughter is a high school sophomore. I'd be stunned if he took a gig outside 495 in the next 3 years.

They have quite a few really. And they will want to hire someone by Friday. No chance he disrupts this championship run by leaving.

I quickly read an ESPN article that said most of the "hot" major NCAA Coaches had made their moves, and they'd be dealing with large buyouts. Maybe they go hard at Danny Hurley? or Jay Wright?

This, and you don‘t fold the hot hand. The Celts are set up to roll for the next 3-4 years, he’d be crazy to leave it behind. In what world is coaching UK a better job than administering the Boston Celtics during a strong run?

Things have changed so much in college that it may as well have been 100 years ago that Stevens was at Butler. I'd guess he stays where is, same with Donovan, and Kentucky hires a current college coach.

This is why I don't think Donovan is interested. I can't imagine he wants to deal with NIL and the portal.

If I'm not mistaken, one of the principal reasons that Jay Wright resigned from Villanova is that the joy he took in college basketball coaching was mostly gone after all the NIL stuff and transfer portal options diminished his approach. He wanted out because it was too hard to navigate all that, plus recruit, plus prepare a team.

Billy Donovan is clear #1 IMO.
I agree with this - he has run his course in NBA as well as being a good fit for the current Kentucky situation.

I also wouldn't be shocked if they offered Brad Stevens a massive deal...I just don't think he'd take it. I am unsure if he wants to go back to college ever - and I agree that given his family, he won't do it now even if he does. I also agree that even if he does like idea of returning to college (even with the massive changes in college ball/recruiting), he's not super likely to walk on this Celtics season and core. So, I just don't see it even if Kentucky truly backs up the Brinks truck...Brad (unlike PItino) seems like a guy who would say other stuff matters to him too, and he is making plenty of money already

There is VORP stat and you can check it through basketball reference. It's not perfect but it's illustrative.

Your overall point stands. KP by himself is worth 3.0 VORP, which is the highest of his career outside of last year where he put up stats for a losing team.

However, the out 4 were not an overall negative. Brogdon by himself was +1.1 in the games he played. Smart was -0.1 but that's because he only played 20 games. And just because I was curious, GW is -0.3 (though he's +0.1 for CHA).

A similar point to yours is that a lot of us where worried when we got KP about his health and ability to get through a season. But if POBOBS hadn't made those trades - can you imagine what a struggle this season would have been if TL and Smart had missed virtually the entire season and Brogdon missed over 1/2?
