INDIANAPOLIS – Brad Stevens, head coach of the
Butler University men's basketball team, today announced his acceptance
of the head coach position of the Boston Celtics.

"Our family is thrilled for the opportunity given to us by the
leadership of the Boston Celtics, but it is emotional to leave a place
that we have called home for the past 13 years," said Stevens.

"We truly love Butler University and Indianapolis, and are very
thankful to have had the opportunity to celebrate so many wonderful
things together. What makes Butler truly unique is the people that we
have been so blessed to work with. When it comes time for our kids to
look at schools, we will start with Butler University." Stevens and his
wife, Tracy, have a young son and daughter.

"Brad and I share a lot of the same values," said Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge.
"Though he is young, I see Brad as a great leader who leads with
impeccable character and a strong work ethic. His teams always play hard
and execute on both ends of the court. Brad is a coach who has already
enjoyed lots of success, and I look forward to working with him towards
Banner 18."

I love this move. No retreads. Fresh young blood to build a team and coach young guys. Fantastic.

Gonna be a tough transition for Stevens, and a bit surprised he was willing to go to a clearly rebuilding team.

But I liked him at Butler, so I am at least intrigued.  He may be the most interesting thing on the team this year sadly.....

I am a Butler grad and have covered Stevens since he was hired. He is a huge stat guy. I can't recall any ties to the NBA at all. Filling out a staff should be interesting.

That certainly came out of left field. With the current roster, it's not an attractive job for any big name coach.

Well, if he can't do the job, that doesn't really matter to the Celtics the next few seasons...and if he's up for it, maybe we've grabbed the next young hotshot coach and he'll last through the rebuilding.

Well, they're skipping the part where they hire some no name who they don't expect to be around in 3 years, Ainge must be confident in whatever the plan is.

This. I'm ecstatic. Guy always seems level headed and doesn't seem to rely on rah rah BS that doesn't translate to the nba.

Stevens is exactly the kind of guy I wanted for this job. He's innovative, a tireless worker, a proven leader, and a developer of talent. He's the perfect guy for the job. Just didn't think he'd leave college. There's literally no downside with Brad.

Holy Cow!  It's full rebuild time. Rajon Rondo, who drove veteran coach Doc Rivers batty, is a sure goner now.  No way Ainge is going to let his new coach have to deal with that.

This. Ecstatic as well. Love what he built at Butler. Love this move.

Stevens is everything the Boston media hates. Quiet, even-tempered, not a cheerleader, way into advanced metrics, young, unproven at the professional level... This should be a fun ride.

Stevens used to go to Pacers practices and pepper Frank Vogel and Brian Shaw with questions. There is a great SI article on Stevens willingness to hire a statistician on his staff. He is incredibly brig and his press conferences will remind you of Bill Belichick. Boring and no drama.

Agree 100%. My only disaapointment is for the Big East Conference.

Goodman: Yesterday after a tip sources close to him said he wouldn't be leaving Butler

Bilas: He has tuned down offers to coach other NBA teams, great hire

Pitino coached the Knicks before going to Kentucky. For the Celtics, he was a mini retread.

The idea that Rondo is uncoachable is laughable. Please stop.

And unlike Pitino, Stevens has next to no ego (as far as basketball coaches go).

Can't compare Pitino and Stevens. One will shove his style down your throat and not adjust based on his personnel and/or the opponent's. The other is the complete opposite who could write a book on how to win with undersized teams and maximize the talent on the floor.

From a basketball outsider perspective, bet its a five year deal, with a promise that first year will suck for Wiggins, lots of training for Sullinger, etc.   Nice to know Stevens is convinced enough in the plan and the likely fruits of a top 8 pick next year, and all the other picks, plus the Rondo comp. that he was willing to buy in.

@PacersDMB Frank Vogel on Brad Stevens: "The Celtics got one heckuva basketball coach. Congrats to Danny Ainge and Brad."

Stevens was heavily involved with the Pacers since Vogel took over for Obie.

Stevens never won fewer than 22 games in his years at Butler.

So that's one adjustment for next year.

Put me down as a fan of the move.z

Edit: I'm also very impressed the Celts kept this so under wraps.

Stevens with a young team that can play perimeter D and transition offense. I really think the Celtics are Good Rondo and an inside straight on health away from not being in line for nearly the pick next year that the consensus is thinking of.

Befre Brad stevens, Butler made one sweet 16 in 40 years and five NCAA tournaments. The Big East may be getting another DePaul or Seton Hall instead of a national program

I'll bet he's right around that number next year, assuming they trade Rondo.

Butler grad here as well, one thing that will definitely be tough is the media. Brad always bristled at the negative attention he got when he wouldn't confirm he was coming back to Butler after every season... the Boston market isn't the easiest fishbowl to be in...

YES!!! I've wanted him to coach the Celtics since I saw Butler's first run at the title. I thought for sure he'd stay with the college game and would only move to either Indiana or Duke. I wonder if his statistician Drew Cannon is coming along with him.

My chief concern as well. He will be labeled a JD Drew clone by certain media. But, fans will not expect much from him for awhile and the Celts are at least the third most significant team in town which will help a bit.

I absolutely love this hire. He's not an ego-maniac, he's into advanced metrics, and he stayed at Butler after 2010 where most college coaches would have been jumping at the first offer to go to a bigger program. He has a tough job ahead, but if things go well, we've got a guy who will be loyal and stick for the long haul.
