Of course it wasn’t. And it didn’t matter who he played for. He was going to the team that offered the most money. Just like every significant free agent does, especially one that hires Boras.so….what the fan account RedSoxStats said?
I think the Sox were genuine in their interest. I also think it was a major long shot the entire time. Yankees were the team he played for, Mets had the largrest check book, Sox had the childhood thing. Being a childhood fan (plus a Celtic fan!) was definitely not as important as the others
Sean McAdam works for MassLive so this is obviously a complete lie
It's a legit offer. Can't say they werent real players for a while. I figured Papi could bridge a few million. Not 65.
hey. i’m a nobody here. but going hard for a guy does matter. not going too much for 1 guy also matters. good for them for not ignoring their future. $750+ is too much today and will be laterOf course it wasn’t. And it didn’t matter who he played for. He was going to the team that offered the most money. Just like every significant free agent does, especially one that hires Boras.
As for the idea that we should somehow applaud the Sox for being “competitive” in the process? None of that matters. You either offer the most money and get the player or you don’t. Being competitive gets you nothing.
Was that the top answer in our poll for when they should tap out?
The offseason is over already? Damn that cheapskate John Henry for not going to $770mm with no deferrals! There is no gain in being second in this. Until they spend some money, I am going to be annoyed. They have been clowning us since 2019, they gouge the customer and put out a less than mediocre product out.
It’s $700 million. Please people don’t bring out the cheap monikers. So nowhere close to what the Yanks or Mets offered him. So shocked
Yeah absurd. How about 800? How about 9? Is that what they should have done? The Sox offered a guy $700 million and people are mad. What a fucking world.
I’m mad that we didn’t end up with a generational hitter. I couldn’t give a fuck about what we offered. We didn’t make the best offer to get a major impact player. The Sox offered a guy $700 million and people are mad. What a fucking world.
The only way to prove that the FO is serious about spending again is to top the richest contract in sports history!Yeah absurd. How about 800? How about 9? Is that what they should have done?
This place is ridiculous. The Sox offered a guy $700 million and people are mad. What a fucking world.
Considering you don’t know at what point the Mets / Yanks upped their offers, how much of the Yanks / Sox offers were deferrals and / or bonuses, etc., this is a pretty interesting take.So nowhere close to what the Yanks or Mets offered him. So shocked
The Red Sox offered a guy 65 million less than he signed for. It's not a real offer. It's fake. It's for PR to say WE TRIED!The Sox offered a guy $700 million and people are mad. What a fucking world.
Less than 10% off is nowhere close?McAdam says the Sox final pitch was 15/700
So nowhere close, because of course they weren't.
You can’t be madThe Sox offered a guy $700 million and people are mad. What a fucking world.
He’s a very very good hitter. One of them. In baseball. We didn’t make the best offer because someone beat us.I’m mad that we didn’t end up with a generational hitter. I couldn’t give a fuck about what we offered. We didn’t make the best offer to get a major impact player.
You disagree? Seeing the Yankees lose is always fun.“Oh the Yankees got worse.”
STFU with loser think.
Both of them, yeah.I feel kinda bad for the people who bought seasons during Saturday’s open house expecting him to come here.
There’s still a lot more offseason to go. If we’re in March and we didn’t land anyone of consequence then believe me, I’ll have a pitchfork in hand. You can’t be mad
However, it’s very fair to question the strategy of only going after “unicorn” free agents and then being surprised when other teams blow the budget
Fuck off!!!Elizabeth Kubler Ross has entered the chat.
Still less of an overpay than what was given on past era to Panda and Hanley and othersI've said this several times, but 15 years/ $700 million would have been an insane overpay. Onto Burnes, Fried, and others
This is ridiculous, even for youThe Red Sox offered a guy 65 million less than he signed for. It's not a real offer. It's fake. It's for PR to say WE TRIED!
This is where I’m at. Do something substantial to improve this club in free agency for 2025.There’s still a lot more offseason to go. If we’re in March and we didn’t land anyone of consequence then believe me, I’ll have a pitchfork in hand.
But not getting Soto? Who cares.
Not a real offer? The Red Sox offered a guy 65 million less than he signed for. It's not a real offer. It's fake. It's for PR to say WE TRIED!
Same people mad they didn’t go further are the same who would get mad when they stick because they spent all their money on one player. $700 was an overpay, but I would’ve been okay with it. $765 is nuts. The Sox offered a guy $700 million and people are mad. What a fucking world.
I mean, the Sox can say any number at this point. No one with knowledge of the actual number has any incentive to correct it. I don't buy that they went to $700m, but I guess anything is possible.
I would be pretty shocked if the Sox hand out $700M in contracts to non-Soto FAs. But now it gets interesting. Fried and Burnes still there and would represent major upgrades. But now the Yankees have a ton of money to spend…15/700 is a hell of an offer. To me, this is a good sign. The Sox made an aggressive offer, arguably too much, but didn't get stupid. I'm good with it. For 700 million we can get two starters and Teo as noted before.
Clearly they were just feigning interest. -sarcasm-The Sox offered a guy $700 million and people are mad. What a fucking world.
Over 15 years, it’s only an additional $4.3M per year. Is $765M really “nuts” compared to $700M over the length of that long a contract?Same people mad they didn’t go further are the same who would get mad when they stick because they spent all their money on one player. $700 was an overpay, but I would’ve been okay with it. $765 is nuts.
Move on. Sign some pitching.
In that world, the Red Sox would have been “on the hook” for 700 million if Soto “called their bluff.” Seems like a weird way to do business. The Red Sox offered a guy 65 million less than he signed for. It's not a real offer. It's fake. It's for PR to say WE TRIED!
