Boston’s taxing pursuit of Juan Soto is over. (Mets)

If Soto truly goes for $800 million, I can't wait for people to declare how cheap the Red Sox are for not going that high.

Nah, but if players start getting these wild contracts consistently, eventually the Sox (and others) either catch up to the market or get left behind on every free agent. No reason to think Cohen would stop here and the Yankees would still have that money to spend if they miss out on Soto.

Hard to be mad, seems like there is a good chance he was never going to leave NYC. Would have loved to have seen him in Boston, but this isn't a worst-case scenario.

I learned today that in order to expedite the comprehensive, state of the then-Century repairs to Notre Dame, it took an astronomical $900M. Or they could have had Juan as a bell-ringer inside the still-smoldering structure.

Edit; to add that they would have no choice but to name him “Quasisoto.”
This post made scrolling through this whole begotten thread worthwhile.

I posted in the predictions thread that the Mets made the most sense because Steve Cohen is worth $21B and desperately wants his favorite childhood team to be a top tier MLB franchise. So not surprised to see him win out. Cue the usual suspects calling John Henry a cheapskate for only making a "performative" $700mm+ bid.

edit: Really would have loved having Soto on the Sox (duh!), but this is still a big hit to the MFYs and, therefore, a win.

Second best outcome I think. Relieved to not watch the Sox pitch to him and Judge back to back anymore. That was a nightmare scenario.

Akin to the beating of a butterfly’s wing, the motion of Soto’s pen across Cohen’s contract — set in motion a disturbance that, when the gale force winds of karmic change had finally becalmed, the great structures of capitalism itself had been flattened.

Best case scenario at that price. Yankees lose him. He goes to NL where he can look foolish in that huge OF and lose to the Dodgers in the NLCS every year.

Now pivot and pivot fast before the Yankees steal everyone.

It would have been fun to have that caliber of player and bat in the lineup for the next decade. With that said, he needed to be 5-7 WAR player annually over that timeframe for it to be a good contract. Let’s go get some pitching and let the kids do their thing. I applaud the Red Sox effort at going after an elite talent like this.

There is no gain in being second in this. Until they spend some money, I am going to be annoyed. They have been clowning us since 2019, they gouge the customer and put out a less than mediocre product out.
