Boston’s taxing pursuit of Juan Soto is over. (Mets)

I think these guys are just referencing each other.

Cuz I doubt Boras or someone told someone "I think he's close..."

Both Puma and Martino are Mets reporters, FWIW.
Martino is Yankees and Mets both (as it says in his Twitter bio if you click through. He published a book about the Yankees earlier this year, "The Yankee Way: The Untold Inside Story of the Brian Cashman Era".

I'm guessing that is about a possible Crochet deal, but even he has no idea what the insider means there, as he says in another tweet.

Edit: What @simplicio said.

Calling it now, whoever he signs with, he was “always going to sign with them” (unless it’s us).

I mean, the guy did say he wouldn’t be outbid. 800 is wild. If I were a billionaire and a baseball fan like Cohen, this is exactly what I would do with my money too.

At this point I hope it's true and I hope he takes it. I don't want to see him play out his best years as a Yankee, but even with an "it's not my money" mentality I don't want my team spending that on a fantastic hitter who doesn't pitch, field, or run like an $800M unicorn. Going to the Mets offers short term satisfaction (he's not on the Yankees) and long-term relief (we don't have that contract).

I'll edit this post when the Sox sign him.

It’s what we always thought from the beginning. Nobody was going to outbid the Mets It has been said for weeks and appears to be very much the case. The hope was he wasn’t all about the money and other factors would win out. $800 million is just insane. What a world.

FSG paid $900 million for a hockey team that’s lost money for most of its existence. They could go to $800 for Soto.

Just as a fun reminder…luxury tax likely takes that contract well above $1b.

What is the opportunity cost for a baseball team of $1b?

New stadium?
Investments in medical and analytics staff?
Sign all of your best young players to long-term deals?

I learned today that in order to expedite the comprehensive, state of the then-Century repairs to Notre Dame, it took an astronomical $900M. Or they could have had Juan as a bell-ringer inside the still-smoldering structure.

Edit; to add that they would have no choice but to name him “Quasisoto.”

Cohen is trying to win the top spot in NY, which would make him way more than 800m over 15 or whatever it is he's bidding. It's a smart move.

The numbers bandied about don't mean that much without knowing the deferrals and other elements.

This is awesome. The owners are all loaded and making tons off being in the coolest club on earth. Loosen the purse strings and make it crazy.

I don't know any more than anyone else on this, but I don't think there will be any deferrals here, same as Yamamoto last year.

The CBA has a clause that for FA contracts over $800M the other 29 teams get 10 compensatory draft picks each, so it all evens out anyway.
