True. But, there is a lot of space between not getting Soto and being out of the top 10.If we remain outside of the top 10 in salary spend, the FO will be called cheap and justifiably so.

So is Jared Carrabis but if he’s positive that will get parroted a bunch.Stats is a fan account.
I can’t speak for anyone else but I am rooting very hard for the Red Sox. It’d be a lot easier to do if they spent to win.I think slightly more because it feels slightly less like rooting against your own team for the sake of self aggrandizement.
I blame my iPhone. I feel shame though.Call insidetheparker! It’s ‘than’ not ‘then’.
Carrabis is a NESN employee. I don't put more weight on his unsubstantiated engagement material than anyone else's, but I'd also say he's more likely to have an actual inside line than Stats. So is Jared Carrabis but if he’s positive that will get parroted a bunch.
choose who you want to believe. All good. Just don’t pick and choose who is worthy of an endorsement and who sucks just based on if the reporting matches what you want to happen
Fair. I basically agreed with what you said and then added to the panic pile. Point taken. My only disagreement with the above is that it’s conditioned on an outcome that is not known.
I get it - people are preparing as a defense mechanism. Just seems like it might be easier on the psyche to respond to facts rather than assumptions.
Agreed completely. There are other guys who could be added who would improve this team without jogging in place. I love Soto here, but he's not the only available help.True. But, there is a lot of space between not getting Soto and being out of the top 10.
Wonderful post. This is where the FO has been completely out of touch while punting the last five years. Kids in the Boston area have minimal interest in the Red Sox and baseball in general. My old high school in suburban Boston couldn’t even field a JV baseball team without 8th graders. So last night when my son spies me watching an SNL skit with Soto and a question mark on his jersey (It's 8:30 Pacific time) and he realizes this Soto guy is a big deal, this is what gets your next generation invested. If we lose out on Soto, there are still stars coming we hope, but from my standpoint - I love the concept of Soto, it calcifies the interest of the younger fans, carrying the tradition, ya know?
You’ve just described my relationship with this thread for the last 4 days or so. Of course, my replying to your post sort of contradicts that but, alas, I’m in the same boat as youDoes anyone else just scroll through the wall of text in this thread, only stopping at the random X/twitter post?
Boy, those have been disappointing.
In regards to this, I don’t think there’s another free agent that moves the needle, definitely not one like Soto, for younger fansWonderful post. MLB has done a wonderful job in changing the rules and shortening the game. It has totally improved the product. Sadly, my 11yo can’t name a Red Sox player, but sure as hell knows players on the Pats, B’s and C’s. The Boston Red Sox are more than a line on a spreadsheet. They are kind of a public trust and should be treated as such. FSG has a long way to go to re-establish solid interest from the younger generation(s). Another offseason of shopping at the clearance rack certainly won’t help.
I’m encouraged at the sense that they are actually going to spend some money this offseason, but I will remain skeptical until the press conferences.
He acknowledged that he was texting Cora "as a fan" while watching the playoffs. He definitely has contacts and I'm sure he gets information that's better than the average person.Carrabis is a NESN employee. I think if something like that were to happen, about 26 or 27 owners would start fighting very hard for a salary cap, and if they had to sacrifice another season of baseball to get it, they just might. The chances of Cohen just getting fed up and saying Screw it, 800 Million dollars it is.
If you had asked me last week Id say 5%?
Now Id say 50%.
I click on online recipes to read about hubby coming home from work and never having eaten “ramen” before but now he loves it!!! Not the actual recipes….You’ve just described my relationship with this thread for the last 4 days or so. Yep. This is my strategy for most “news” threads these days.Does anyone else just scroll through the wall of text in this thread, only stopping at the random X/twitter post?

Zero chance of this happening. When there is a cap, there has to be a floor, and about 10-12 teams don’t want to have to spend to a floor.I think if something like that were to happen, about 26 or 27 owners would start fighting very hard for a salary cap, and if they had to sacrifice another season of baseball to get it, they just might.
Dunno about this, but I’m answering because the Mets are actually currently 9th in terms of taxable payroll next year, certainly not above everyone else like this implies.I think if something like that were to happen, about 26 or 27 owners would start fighting very hard for a salary cap, and if they had to sacrifice another season of baseball to get it, they just might.
And if that happened after giving Soto some unicorn contract that no one else will ever be able to match for decades, suddenly those opt outs aren't looking very likely to be opted.I think if something like that were to happen, about 26 or 27 owners would start fighting very hard for a salary cap, and if they had to sacrifice another season of baseball to get it, they just might.
To say nothing of the owners opening their actual books to the players to determine revenue sharing, and fights about what constitutes baseball revenue for teams with their own networks, and baseball driven real estate venturesZero chance of this happening. When there is a cap, there has to be a floor, and about 10-12 teams don’t want to have to spend to a floor.
If I might add to this, having all of that developing talent in the system at one time as well as Duran and Abreu, all developing in cities that are a reasonable drive for much of the fan base, is a huge plus if the kids are being introduced to the minor league experience. In regards to this, I don’t think there’s another free agent that moves the needle, definitely not one like Soto, for younger fans
Oddly enough, I think the Red Sox next best opportunity of winning over a younger generation is seeing guys like Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Kyle Teel, and Kristian Campbell forming a new young nucleus of Red Sox players that sticks around and has success for the next 6 or 7 years, and supplementing them with a few good pitchers.

Yeah, this is SO ANNOYING. I really don't care anymore who gets him, just want us to be able to move on.I just love how boras holds the entire FA market hostage every offseason.
makes the offseason so much fun!
I'd say sure. We traded for him when he was still in AA. He was just a chubby outfielder with an insane BB% and a dream. He still had some development to do with us, was still "growing."Would Abreu count as home-grown? Is it in the E-Rod home-grown* starting pitcher category?
Nah, every day at the same time the ghost of Cory Lidle crashes his plane into Nip's server tower.SOSH just went down for me, so I figured there was news....
Did the lack of proper capitalization make your head explode? It drives me nuts.Yeah, this is SO ANNOYING. I really don't care anymore who gets him, just want us to be able to move on.
No, I took note of that, but my aggravation with the Soto Situation overwhelmed it.Did the lack of proper capitalization make your head explode? It drives me nuts.
I don't think situation is a proper noun. No, I took note of that, but my aggravation with the Soto Situation overwhelmed it.
And yet he still says all of the 5 teams still have a chance and none have been eliminated.
I disagree. If they actually sign one of the big free agents, I’ll change my mind. This reminds me too much of the Bruins always in the mix for guys like Brett Hull in the 90s.I know others have posted similar viewpoints but I can't help but feel that, whatever happens with Soto, the Sox are back at the big boy table. They are ready to spend money and actually compete. To me this is a huge change.
Are you kidding me? How about if I put "Soto Situation" in quotes? It has become a title in my mind.I don't think situation is a proper noun.
Nice vibes check by Heyman. No real facts.
We're all a little nuts around here. But yes, I need this to come to an end some time soon. Boras makes the offseason so non-fun, no matter how good he generally is for his clients. Are you kidding me? How about if I put "Soto Situation" in quotes? It has become a title in my mind.
Right now, I am becoming extremely annoyed with myself, for checking this thread so often. I must be nuts.
John Henry always looks depressed. So what’s new, Heyman?
It is always important to remember that Heyman is reporting what Boras wants to put out there. Nothing that hack reports is worthy of consideration. I prefer to wait to wait until legitimate reporters check in as opposed to an unofficial PR flack for the biggest agent in the game.John Henry always looks depressed. So what’s new, Heyman?
Excuse me, Mr. Breslow can you tell me where your confidence level concerning Juan Soto is at right now? What would you say it is on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being very high? And you Mr Cashman, where's your confidence level at?
I was only joking around and trying to add some levity. Are you kidding me? How about if I put "Soto Situation" in quotes? It has become a title in my mind.
Right now, I am becoming extremely annoyed with myself, for checking this thread so often. I must be nuts.
It’s to the point where it’s gotten annoying now. If all the offers are around the $700M mark, I’m sure he knows where he wants to play and I’m sure he’s known for days. Just announce it already so the rest of the offseason can start.man these posts are just nothing. What's the point of the infinite versions of 'league source says decision'. This isn't referencing any SOSH member, but godamn these beat reporters just trolling for clicks.
Then I’m not sure what to tell you other than only react when he signs.man these posts are just nothing. What's the point of the infinite versions of 'league source says decision'. This isn't referencing any SOSH member, but godamn these beat reporters just trolling for clicks.
