Stats is a fan account.
So is Jared Carrabis but if he’s positive that will get parroted a bunch.

choose who you want to believe. All good. Just don’t pick and choose who is worthy of an endorsement and who sucks just based on if the reporting matches what you want to happen

I think slightly more because it feels slightly less like rooting against your own team for the sake of self aggrandizement.
I can’t speak for anyone else but I am rooting very hard for the Red Sox. It’d be a lot easier to do if they spent to win.

Boy, those have been disappointing.

Carrabis is a NESN employee. I don't put more weight on his unsubstantiated engagement material than anyone else's, but I'd also say he's more likely to have an actual inside line than Stats.

My only disagreement with the above is that it’s conditioned on an outcome that is not known.

I get it - people are preparing as a defense mechanism. Just seems like it might be easier on the psyche to respond to facts rather than assumptions.
Fair. I basically agreed with what you said and then added to the panic pile. Point taken.

True. But, there is a lot of space between not getting Soto and being out of the top 10.
Agreed completely. There are other guys who could be added who would improve this team without jogging in place. I love Soto here, but he's not the only available help.

I have a young son with me in Los Angeles. He grew up in LA. He's only been to Boston to visit his grandparents and that was awhile go because the either passed or moved to Florida. His mom and his stepdad have schemed to make him an LA sports fan - they think this makes more sense because he's an LA kid. They may have even succeeded in their sick deviant plan if not for the Boston Celtics being a far more rootable team than the Lakers (or Clippers) during his impressionable youth. Like me as a kid, he's running around talking about Tatum like I talked about Bird. These parallels are truly one of the pleasures of having a kid.

He loves the Red Sox cause of me, but it's much better if they also give him a reason, as the Celtics do. My son keeps asking me "Who is the best player on the Red Sox" He wants the exciting guys like Tatum and Brown and of course, Pritchard to root for and sure I can say "Well, we got Devers and guy named Casas...and a lot of people coming up!" But it's not nearly as fun as those times in our fandom when we could say: "We got Big Papi!" or "Let's get tickets for when Pedro is pitching!" And if you have a kid, (and when you were a kid) you know what these big personalities mean to their rooting interest.

So last night when my son spies me watching an SNL skit with Soto and a question mark on his jersey (It's 8:30 Pacific time) and he realizes this Soto guy is a big deal, this is what gets your next generation invested. If we lose out on Soto, there are still stars coming we hope, but from my standpoint - I love the concept of Soto, it calcifies the interest of the younger fans, carrying the tradition, ya know?

Wonderful post. This is where the FO has been completely out of touch while punting the last five years. Kids in the Boston area have minimal interest in the Red Sox and baseball in general. My old high school in suburban Boston couldn’t even field a JV baseball team without 8th graders.

MLB has done a wonderful job in changing the rules and shortening the game. It has totally improved the product. Sadly, my 11yo can’t name a Red Sox player, but sure as hell knows players on the Pats, B’s and C’s. The Boston Red Sox are more than a line on a spreadsheet. They are kind of a public trust and should be treated as such. FSG has a long way to go to re-establish solid interest from the younger generation(s). Another offseason of shopping at the clearance rack certainly won’t help.

I’m encouraged at the sense that they are actually going to spend some money this offseason, but I will remain skeptical until the press conferences.

You’ve just described my relationship with this thread for the last 4 days or so. Of course, my replying to your post sort of contradicts that but, alas, I’m in the same boat as you

In regards to this, I don’t think there’s another free agent that moves the needle, definitely not one like Soto, for younger fans

Oddly enough, I think the Red Sox next best opportunity of winning over a younger generation is seeing guys like Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Kyle Teel, and Kristian Campbell forming a new young nucleus of Red Sox players that sticks around and has success for the next 6 or 7 years, and supplementing them with a few good pitchers.

He acknowledged that he was texting Cora "as a fan" while watching the playoffs. He definitely has contacts and I'm sure he gets information that's better than the average person.

The chances of Cohen just getting fed up and saying Screw it, 800 Million dollars it is.

If you had asked me last week Id say 5%?

Now Id say 50%.
I think if something like that were to happen, about 26 or 27 owners would start fighting very hard for a salary cap, and if they had to sacrifice another season of baseball to get it, they just might.

Zero chance of this happening. When there is a cap, there has to be a floor, and about 10-12 teams don’t want to have to spend to a floor.

Dunno about this, but I’m answering because the Mets are actually currently 9th in terms of taxable payroll next year, certainly not above everyone else like this implies.

And if that happened after giving Soto some unicorn contract that no one else will ever be able to match for decades, suddenly those opt outs aren't looking very likely to be opted.

To say nothing of the owners opening their actual books to the players to determine revenue sharing, and fights about what constitutes baseball revenue for teams with their own networks, and baseball driven real estate ventures

If I might add to this, having all of that developing talent in the system at one time as well as Duran and Abreu, all developing in cities that are a reasonable drive for much of the fan base, is a huge plus if the kids are being introduced to the minor league experience.

Would Abreu count as home-grown? Is it in the E-Rod home-grown* starting pitcher category?
I'd say sure. We traded for him when he was still in AA. He was just a chubby outfielder with an insane BB% and a dream. He still had some development to do with us, was still "growing."

I know others have posted similar viewpoints but I can't help but feel that, whatever happens with Soto, the Sox are back at the big boy table. They are ready to spend money and actually compete. To me this is a huge change.

I disagree. If they actually sign one of the big free agents, I’ll change my mind. This reminds me too much of the Bruins always in the mix for guys like Brett Hull in the 90s.

Are you kidding me? How about if I put "Soto Situation" in quotes? It has become a title in my mind.
Right now, I am becoming extremely annoyed with myself, for checking this thread so often. I must be nuts.
We're all a little nuts around here. But yes, I need this to come to an end some time soon. Boras makes the offseason so non-fun, no matter how good he generally is for his clients.

...I see two ways to read them.

1: The Red Sox think they're going to lose out on Juan Soto.
2: Boras is using Heyman to get the Sox to up their offer, and the Red Sox are signaling they won't go any further - and are willing to move on to Teoscar.

Both #1 and #2 could be true, but it is also possible the Red Sox don't have the highest offer, but believe they've made an offer good enough to sign Soto - and that Soto prefers Boston.

John Henry always looks depressed. So what’s new, Heyman?
It is always important to remember that Heyman is reporting what Boras wants to put out there. Nothing that hack reports is worthy of consideration. I prefer to wait to wait until legitimate reporters check in as opposed to an unofficial PR flack for the biggest agent in the game.

It’s to the point where it’s gotten annoying now. If all the offers are around the $700M mark, I’m sure he knows where he wants to play and I’m sure he’s known for days. Just announce it already so the rest of the offseason can start.
