Cotillo as of 2:02 pm today.

As the baseball world descends upon the Hilton Anatole on Sunday ahead of the annual Winter Meetings, there’s an industry-wide feeling that Juan Soto’s free agency decision is imminent. And so far, there’s no reason to believe the Red Sox have been eliminated.”

An industry source described Boston’s efforts on the Soto pursuit, to this point, as “an A+ effort.”

You know I am very fond of you, but your use of apostrophes drives me nuts. (As my husband says, I don't have that far to go.) "Trumps the reality" is what you mean to say.
"Trump's the reality" is also the case nationally, but has nothing to do with Soto.
it is one of the most bizarre of English's many bizarre features that "adding S at the end of the word" can mean at least 4 distinct, unrelated things:
1. Plural (Trumps = more than one Trump)
2. Possessive (Trump's = belonging to Trump)
3. Conjugating verbs (Trumps = third person singular of verb "to trump")
4. Contraction of "is" or "has" (Trump's = Trump is)
Okay, carry on.

Yes, I apologize for that and I can explain. Every time that I typed trump in that post and even just now in this post, auto correct capitalized the word and left me with Trump instead of trump. When I typed trumps it left me with Trump's. I change the T to lower case, but missed the apostrophe that auto correct added.

Seemingly, no one use apostrophes correctly. The "its" versus "it's" mistakes on this board run rampant.
I’ve given up on trying when it comes to possessive apostrophes when applied to words like Red Sox, Boras, Valdez. I just forgo the extra “s” for all of these and don’t care if I’m right. Red Sox’, Boras’, Valdez’.

I’m also remaining optimistic Soto is coming here. He wants it. Plus I get to tell you all “I told you so”.

The latest from McAdam and Cotillo
DALLAS — As the baseball world descends upon the Hilton Anatole on Sunday ahead of the annual Winter Meetings, there’s an industry-wide feeling that Juan Soto’s free agency decision is imminent. And so far, there’s no reason to believe the Red Sox have been eliminated.

As of early Sunday afternoon, Boston is believed to remain in the mix for Soto with negotiations between the superstar and all interested teams hurdling toward a conclusion. It’s unclear if final offers have been requested or submitted, though one person with knowledge of the negotiations said Sunday morning that all sides are “at an interesting point in the talks.” At least some top Boras Corporation officials have already arrived at the hotel where the Winter Meetings are being held. So have decision-makers from virtually every team, including at least one senior Red Sox official. By the end of Sunday, the entire baseball world will have arrived in Texas.

An industry source described Boston’s efforts on the Soto pursuit, to this point, as “an A+ effort.” But even if the Red Sox have pitched Soto on something the Aaron Judge-led Yankees and Francisco Lindor-led Mets can’t — being the unquestioned face of their team, something the reserved Rafael Devers likely wouldn’t mind at all — there’s still a feeling that Soto will probably sign for the biggest total guarantee. The industry has long believed the Mets would make a Godfather offer to land Soto no matter what it takes. But there’s palpable fear among interested teams Sunday that the Yankees might also be in that same boat. The Yankees, of course, offer Soto something the other interested teams (the Red Sox, Mets, Blue Jays and Dodgers) can’t: familiarity and comfort after a successful first year in the Bronx.

I guess I'm delulu because I still think the Sox are the most logical landing spot for Soto.

Best farm, biggest Dominican connection, most cap space, best park for his hitting style, best place to hide his defense (left field), team he can be the big boss star, City he can be the biggest star, cheaper taxes.

I can hardly find a reason for him to stay in NY.

To what hang out with Aaron Boone and cringe Gerrit Cole?

To go be culturally irrelevant with the Mets?

He's coming to the Red Sox.

Ok, so if the Red Sox land Soto, you're not allowed to complain when that new car feeling fades and you realize there was no reason to buy it. You also can't complain when we have no cap space in the future.
Damn, DBMH. You're screwed for 15 years now. The rules have been set.

Re Milliken’s X post about the Sox doing an A+ job going after Soto, at her speech at Howard University the day after, Kamala praised her campaign team for doing a phenomenal job too. Don’t have the ton of bricks falling on your head emoticon here anymore.

I want to revisit the whaling chapters in Moby Dick. I don't think they got enough run in this thread.
I was kinda hoping the tax stuff would go on a bit more. At least long enough that I could learn of some new deductions I hadn't thought of.

Let’s please wait at least until some confirmation before we enter “Stage 2: Never wanted him anyway” stage.
You don't even have to though? Nobody should be offering more than 14 years / $550 million. Shohei Ohtani got $700 million, and he's an absolute unicorn. He's the best hitter in baseball - possessing all five tools and then some - and is a top-15 starting pitcher when he's healthy. In no world should Soto surpass him.

Ohtani got $460m, and he wasn't on the market at 26.

I am part of the fanbase that doesn't care about ownership margins or profits. I want them to pay up to field the best team possible and then a bit more for good measure.

Also, I have been on this board over two decades and people have screamed "overpay" at every transaction across every sport yet the deals continue to escalate. When do fans start to wonder why all these horrible deals continue to get done but at increasing dollar amounts that even outstrip inflation?

The greatest trick sports owners ever pulled on fans was convincing them that their interests are aligned. They are not. If ownership cannot foot the bill to compete with big market teams, maybe its time to let someone else try. Hopefully they are still committed even after Soto

If they were truly in this per reports, that's good but its not enough. Its been years since this team is relevant. Would this fanbase tolerate a player who hasn't produced in half a decade?

Spelchkr probably ends up giving us more misspells than folks’ inability to spell.

Hyperbole much? Ohtani is probably the best player the sport has ever seen, but two of the five tools are 'glove' and 'arm' and Ohtani is a DH. He obviously would have the 'arm' tool checked if he ever played the field, but he doesn't.
