How come whenever these high profile free agency plays come up, teams "peel off" one at a time? Why not just have 5, and then announce the winner? What is the mechanics behind this? Are teams putting this out themselves as a slow letdown to fans? Is Boras for some sort of negotiating play?
Standard leverage play (not just sports free agency). Get the broadest bidder population possible, winnow it down over time as bids increase, end up with a core of bidders who can be leveraged against each other for maximum effect.

Just for context, my neighbor, the former major market GM, often said that 80-90% of what you hear/read is because we put it out there.
I’m imagining you two discussing this at the end of your driveways putting bags in the trash cans.

I’m also kind of wondering how much of that is a GM flexing a bit and trying to diminish the media’s role in this stuff.

Curious with all this tax calculus between NY and MA: does Boras get his cut before or after tax? And, where does he live? Presumably, his % is impacted differently than where Soto would earn his money.

Edit: Boras Corp. is in CA. Quick unvetted search shows similar state tax rates between there and Queens.
My question is how does Boras get paid? Does he get paid by the teams that employ his players on a W-2, or do the players 1099 their agents?

Agents are hired by, and are paid their % by the players. Baseball agents get between 4% and 5% for contracts. They get more for endorsement deals.

Here's a link to The Sports Economist on what they make.

Boras is also 72 years old and has an unspendable amount of money. 800k is grocery money.
It doesn’t. The timing of it is completely controlled by Boras. He’s going to want to get the most eyeballs on it as possible.
it’s crazy to think otherwise.
At this point, this is about Boras' legacy more than money. Soto is here to cement Boras' position as the best agent in baseball history.

The man loves to talk. Before our sons' youth hoop games, we'd shoot around on an empty basket, and he'd just talk. He mentioned some big stuff that never made the press.

Admittedly, we haven't spoken in quite a while. We felt badly that we couldn't make it to the funeral.

I feel oddly Zen about this. If he picks the Red Sox that is incredible for all the reasons we've spent months rehashing.

If he picks the Yankees then we already know he alone doesn't suddenly guarantee them winning a title, so it's not as devastating as some previous signings had felt at the time they happened, plus his cost could genuinely damage their plans long term.

If he picks the Mets, we'll ... I'm biased and just can't ever consider the Mets to be super relevant to anything that matters outside of media market stuff.

There's no outcome here that will feel gut wrenching to me. If anything my greatest fear as a Sox fan was that the ownership doesn't actually want to win anymore, and them being legitimate bidders in this case doesn't solve that, but it doesn't cement it or anything.

I feel fine with whatever happens.

This is exactly where I’m at. In fact, I’m not so sure the Yankees getting him isn’t a good outcome if it takes them out of the pitching free agency field.

Him going to the Mets and then the Red Sox and Yankees bidding for arms might be the scariest outcome.

Someone mentioned Boras’s relationship with the Sox a few days ago as well as the Teixeira negotiations. IIRC, it was strained when they had Henry and Lucchino fly down to Texas to finalize a deal – only to realize as soon as they got there that Boras was simply using them as leverage against the Yankees. And to their credit, Henry and Lucchino got right back on their plane and left.

Does he think potential clients won't hear about this deal if it's announce at some weird time?

The eyeballs are going to be the same in the end.

There are two horrible outcomes. The first is that he comes to us and we don't win a championship before he becomes riddled with injuries, or his skills fade, and we are stock with that massive contract until 2039. The second is that he goes the Yankees and leads them to (I can't bring myself to finish the sentence).
At this point I just want him to go to the Mets. I would love to sign Fried first so that we are not in a bidding war with the Yankees with him (although reports say that we may already be?)

Plus, if he signs with NYY or with the Sox, the rivalry will get turned up a couple of notches, which is overdue.
Adding some angst and anger into the AL East makes the season much more fun.

I had the exact same thought the other night, thinking it might be one of the few ways Chapman can endear himself to the Fenway fans early in the season.
It would be even more endearing if Chapman strikes him out. Cam Booser could drill him in the ribs for a lot less money.

Everyone needs to step back and ask themselves “Why would Boston Strong lie?”
I don't think they lie, I just don't think they know shit. They are a fan account. It's essentially @soxhop411 , except without any semblance of accountability.

I don't even know why we are still allowed to post tweets from them here like they are a news source.

Sometimes the best moves are the ones you don't make.

If the rumored 750m with opt outs and limited deferrals is true, I hope we are out, it will be for the best.

Hopefully this attempt is a sign the team is committed to increasing payroll, even if it's not Soto.

This is pretty much where I am at...at those terms, if we don't get him, I won't be devastated. Assuming of course that we do turn around and spend significant money elsewhere. Despite the risk, I would rather they pump some money into Fried and another FA or two. Prefer that route over the trading Casas and others for SP.

I'm not going to go here.

I want the guy. It's not my money. If we don't get him, we lose out on the best FA out there and probably one of the top 2 in a number of years. And I do believe it will be a disaster if this drags out and more elite guys come off the board.

If we don't get him, I hope there are enough talented bats out there that we can still find real upgrades.

I won't be "devastated" if we come back and scoop up Teoscar, and an elite SP or two, and more bullpen help. But I can't and won't say it's a good thing.

Yep, I’ve never really expected the Red Sox to get him, so I won’t be upset if they don’t. I don’t really like any of the offense Plans B-Z other than Seiya, either. I’ll only be disappointed if they don’t address starting pitching somehow - I think they probably prefer a trade, but I don’t agree!

Sounds like the Red Sox are pivoting to other plans. The last few years and the way they handled the Mookie thing right or wrong has hurt their perception not just among the fans but players also.

This makes no sense. Boston offered/will offer what they offered/will offer, Mookie has nothing to do with it.

Perception at times that commitment to winning by trading a generational talent like Mookie and then having several bad seasons aside from 2021 can be an optic. Like I said, right or wrong it can impact things negatively.

Yankees fans booed Judge last year and wanted Boone fired the whole time. Soto agreed they only had two good players in the middle of the season. I can't wait for the shit storm if they start slow and Judge is making half of what Soto is.

You don’t need sources for this one. News is starting to trickle they dangled Casas and they are checking in with Santander. It would appear the pivot is taking place. Sox aren’t being mentioned by Heyman any longer.

If he was simply not going to sign because he wanted to test free agency, should they have let him walk for free to show commitment to winning?

Pitching, diversification, flexibility.

It's a very reasonable way to pivot, as long as they are actually committed to spending a big chunk of that Soto $. People acting like Soto is some assured 8 WAR guy for the next decade are mistaken, a lot can happen over time, even to position players.

I think ownership botched the Mookie thing big time and am not opposed to them paying huge $ for elite talent by any means. But these #s are getting absurd. Soto has been on plenty of crummy teams, we're not talking about prime Lebron James on the open market here.

News has had them checking in on pretty much every big FA.

A Casas trade is immaterial to a Soto signing.

Heyman writes for the NEW YORK Post, that's his focus. And he writes what Boras tells him to.

I hear what @radsoxfan is saying. And while it would be really exciting to get Soto, I’d also be pretty excited if they signed Fried, used their resources down the road to sign longer-term whichever of their young players pop, and trade off their surplus positional players for more pitching.

For those who are saying they're ok (or even want) Soto to go elsewhere because of what the price tag has become, I'm legit trying to remember any cases where a team paid so much for playerA that they were out on player's X, Y, Z. We probably can't know of any cases with certainty, but is this really a thing or something fans tell ourselves?

Jacking the price up for Cashman isn't really much of a consolation prize. Still holding out hope that Papi is blowing up his phone

Does anyone have a feel for how quickly the other big dominoes are going to fall? I'd appreciate a quick Fried announcement in the event we come in third or fourth on the Sotostakes.

I'm ready to move on from The Scottish Trade. But if anyone wants to join me in whinging about the FO missing the chance to get him in a trade and set Boston rather than NYC as his baseline....
