Boston’s taxing pursuit of Juan Soto is over. (Mets)

Never make your best offer first

see what the Mets offer next and judge whether you can top it

but this shows interest and engagement

but…. Yeah…. The Mets will be tough to top.

12/600 feels like a relatively mundane AAV for the Mets to match while adding 2-3 years.

The way I read that post, Soto being "interested in Boston" is basically code for "increase the offer". I assume if it was the highest offer he would have already accepted, so I assume this means it is a competitive offer but perhaps not the highest. Eh, who knows. Its gonna be mentally draining until he signs - wherever he signs. :D

EDIT: It is interesting that the deal is for 12 years, when that other "leaker" also reported 12 years. Maybe that leaker really isn't all smoke and mirrors.

Yep, feels like the Sox floated this to say see, we tried! Knowing full well that offer is nowhere near close enough to get it done.
It also feels like this is exactly what the "Henry is cheap" crowd is going to say no matter what the Sox offer if the player signs somewhere else.

You are not alone.

I may get this post sent to the 'so cheeeep' thread : ) but I 100% doubt the Sox willingness to invest sustainably (in pitching and otherwise) around him, especially should his contract become an albatross. At some point in 15 years that seems likely, but their PhD thesis worthy customized Soto Black Scholes model has that probability (distribution) for them. I've heard observations like "who cares what happens 10 years from now!?!" I know who, Private Equity and Bond Investors who would still be writing a $50m check.
The Dodgers don't seem to have any problem spending money. We aren't a poverty franchise.

The Beckett then Sale contracts were enough to seemingly send them into a years long tailspin where they were more invested in gaslighting the fanbase than bothering to invest in the roster. Those contracts weren't half as onerous (even inflation adjusted) as Soto's could be.
Those were pitchers. Both of whom won World Series! And I don't know what tailspin you're talking about...after Beckett led us to the WS in 07 we won 95 games in 08&09 followed by 89 and 90 win in 10&11. And after Sale led us to the WS in 18 we made the ALCS in 21.

Also if we didn't trade Sale on the last year of his deal and he won a Cy Young for the Red Sox last year I think we make the playoffs and his contract doesn't seem quite so bad (despite all the fluky injuries).

MLBtraderumors has their prediction at 13/600 so 12/600 might well be enough.

That's a given, doesn't matter to those people if the player signs for a dollar more or 100 million more. Sometimes players don't want to sign somewhere. Obviously no clue what Soto would choose if the offers are close though. I'd like to think the Sox personally

It would all depend on what they do with their money, if Soto goes elsewhere

You guys in here posting "Now they can tell us they tried!" are doing God's work.

Don't let anyone tell you that isn't needed after every rumor post!

Just make it 13 / $700M and get ‘er done, Craig. That’s $53.8M AAV. Joel Embiid’s extension was $64.2M AAV, and that dude’s wheels may never be right again.

Well, if they have offered $625 million to Soto, we can't say Henry is cheap. It seems the organizational philosophy is coming into focus: open the vaults for young elite FA players with lots of prime left, and that's kinda it. Though those guys very rarely come around. It's not necessarily wrong-minded. Though tough to fall short on so many good but not great players like Teoscar and Lugo, etc ...If they don't get Soto, will Henry okay signing three very good but not great players with the same money? We shall see I guess!

caveat: I know Story is an exception, though essentially for five years, the Sox have nickel and dimed a lotta dudes and subsequently fallen short

Anyway, at this point, fucking goddamnit, I want them to get Soto!!! It's emotional now, I admit. GodDAMN, I had no expectation, wasn't even sure it was the wisest move, and now I'm checking shit every 10 minutes to see if they got him. I know I'm full-on morphing into Charlie Brown charging that football and can't do anything about it!

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
Sure, but ballplayers would be closer to the Hudson and the GWB, like in Saddle River or Alpine. Not more than a half hour drive when ballplayers would likely be making the drive.
Agreed. I know Damon lived in Midtown when he was a Yankee.
And a few live in Cresskill. And guessing that you mean UPPER Saddle River. Sabathia still lives in Alpine (his son played at a local private HS) and Damon was nearby, a big rental on the corner of Closter Dock and IIRC Anderson (tho he may have also kept a place in the city). A number of others were scattered about the area.

Late 70s, a ton of players lived in Norwood (Munson, Catfish, a bunch more), especially where the nicer homes are up on the hill.

I believe the offer has been made and is probably close to what's being leaked. And I know that Passan is right and that Soto remains unsigned.

Either way, I feel better about or chances now than I did yesterday. This IS fun.

To me, the most encouraging note in this tweet storm isn't the money. It's the note from Gomez that Soto and Devers had an hour-long talk. That (if true) signals interest more than the numbers -- which could change a half-dozen times between now and when it's over

Which is what the Dodgers did. Which is what like 25 people on this board in the last 3-4 years have said they were doing. Focus on building up the farm system, get into a position where you can begin to compete / contend, then pounce on the elite FAs at the top of the market. It’s almost like they had a plan.
