Purcell, in his letter to employees, also explained, "In addition to great news and advertising coverage for our dedicated readers over the years, all I ever wanted to do was keep the Boston Herald alive. And it is with this pending sale that I am able to do that in these difficult newspapering times. I am certain this is the best pathway forward for you and for the newspaper we have nurtured together, in my case, for the last 33 years."

I feel for the employees who’s pension is up in the air. The one guy who asked the question had been there 36 years. Even if they end up getting it or part of it that’s not a good way to go into the holidays.

That’s brutal.

There were definitely some cuts when Gatehouse bought the Providence Journal a few years ago, but it is tough for me to measure the impact because Belo had slashed all of the local editions and bureau offices about eight years before so I can't remember who got axed when

Word is Gatehouse wants to cut the number of Herald employees to 175 from the current 240 or so. Current staffers are invited to interview with Gatehouse for a job.

Usually what happens when Gatehouse buys a paper is it tries to clear out experienced employees who earn decent salaries and replace them with cheap young employees.

There are still a few very good reporters and editors at the Herald, along with some seriously lazy columnists and press release re-writers.

Turning the paper into talk radio in print turns out to have been a poor strategy.

The Herald is moving from Boston to Braintree...

https://patch.com/massachusetts/braintree/boston-herald-moving-hq-braintree
The memo from publisher Kevin Corrado to employees indicates that the newspaper is moving into an office building on Grossman Drive. Few other details beyond other businesses in the area and a moving schedule of Nov. 26 to Dec. 16 are listed.

The move will be the newspaper's second of the decade. They left their South End home of nearly five decades in 2012 for their current home in the Seaport District. Their new home is a short walk from the Braintree MBTA station.

Bet this is one of those moves aimed at getting employees to quit so they don't have to pay severance.
