Boston College vs. Notre Dame: Football at Fenway in 2015?

I know, it's Cafardo, so who knows whose water he's carrying.  But it would be most cool to see American Football played at the old ballyard.  I don't think there's been a football game there since the Pats left in the mid 60's!

BC and Notre Dame are next slated to face each other in 2015. There had been rumors of that game being played in Ireland, but the focus is now Fenway.

I have been advocating of this for many years! It is a road game for BC and will be part of the Shamrock Series that ND has where they play one "home" game a year at a "neutral" site. BC is the road team so the Flynn Funders can't put up a stink. They would configure the field like they did for the Pats in the 60's (laid out from the bullpens to the 3rd base dugout) and they would will ut up temporary stands along the green monster.

It is a one time event and since BC played their home games at Fenway  in the 30's and 40's along with Braves (now Nickerson) Field, it has a lot of nostalgia. It would the 75th anniversary of the "mythical" National Championship team that was coached by Frank Leahy who went on to coach at ND and win "actual" national championships.

The park will hold about 45,000 for the game. It will be on NBC as an ND home game, probably played in late November and would give BC a "7th home game" in a round about way. I think it is great for recruiting, rev up the fan base a bit and would be a hit.  Hope it works out.

Wow - I had assumed that BC had caved like we always do. Brad Bates forever, Gene DeFilippo never.

Agreed.  I would have a hard time supporting the event if BC lost a home game but I think this will be a nice "one time" thing.  It will be a bit strange, however, to have a Boston team playing in Boston with an ND partial crowd.

Shouldn't be much different from the past couple of ND visits to Alumni. The Starter jacket crowd comes out in force.

ok without the rotting corpse of Campion to chip in I think that I can safely say that I am the only member of the EO' family' that was at the last football game played at Fenway, Dec 1 1968 vs the expansion Cinn Bengals (according to wikepedia, i was one of the 17796 in attendence) and that was a papered house, as i went with about 35 other 8th grade players from irish Riv youth center football.

there is going to be big trouble staging the game here, for reasons mentioned about the Liverpool game that was here last year. In the 60s the field ran from the bullpens to the 3rd base dugout, with not much room before the low 3rd base walls. Since the recent years renovations at least 2 or 4 rows have been added from the dugout to wear the wall juts out and turns down the foul line. Since we dont have an engineering school I cant say for sure, but I'b bet there is no fucking way to squeeze a 120 yard field in there.

Back in the day there were also temp stands up against the Monstah, in face most of us watched little football that day, and spent much of it pretending we were Yaz leaping against the real fucking scoreboard and wall (remember we were 13 years old and this was one year removed from the Impossible Dream)

bottom line is, this will give the program tremndous attention, its not 'our' game its 'their' game and a night game in November? I'll be all for watching it from Remy's or the Baseball Tavern

Moose- you have been against this since it was first discussed on the BC football threads many years ago. But it is happening. I hear your complaints but a couple of points:

1. They have already measured out the field and the layout still fits in the ballpark despite the additions. This won't be a Wrigley fiasco of a few years ago.

2. Not sure if they will put the seats up against the monster. I have a photo of the kind layout with the seats (remember Buck Printing in center field before the Jumbletrom as Mumbles would say) and would post bit but I can't figure out how to do it on SOSH.

3. It is THEIR game. BC will get only about 5,000 tix for this and I am guessing they will be in the right field grandstands under the Budweiser seats. Tix will average $500 a pop since ND has already said they have to adjust the price to make the same gate revenue as they do in an 80,000 seat stadium. Their average seat price now is $294. Yup not a typo. (FWIW the tix I had for the SC game in LA this year were $65....25 yd line 40 rows up....quite a bit less than South Bend)

3. My first Pats game was at Fenway Pahhhk in 1966 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Sat in the bleachers. I was a little kid and my late father took me and my brother. So I understand what you are saying.

4. I'm sure this thing will sell out regardless as every wannabe and Red Sox cling on will be at the game (Lenny Clarke, Matt and Ben and all the rest). No one except real high rollers from BC will be at this game, unless you can score free tix.

5. Great recruiting tool and in 2 years BC may even be in a position to give them a game...and win it.

6. Late November night game. It could be a shit show weather wise or it could be in the 40s or 50s. Who cares? If it snowed it would be great!!!

Since it is a "road game" I see little if any down side to it.

Don't be surprised if this works that FSP looks into getting a bowl game ala Pinstripe Bowl or a yearly football game with the likes of Harvard-Yale, UMass-BC or maybe even.....BC-UConn.

Bernie, I'm not against it in the least, as long as its not a BC home game there. Let the French keep the gate I will take two years of Daz using this on the recruiting trail. The novelty of this will make it an incredibly tough ticket with all of the opening day one game a year fraud 'fans' lookin for them. I will be happy to watch in a bar

BC gets the best of both worlds for the next 2 seasons.  They get to play at Gillette and Fenway without losing a home game.
Agree. And next year legitimate OOC opponents at home (USC and Colorado St.).
