The link calls him a lefty-hitting first baseman. I would call him a righty-non-hitting first baseman.

Seems there should be a goodbye haiku:

Bobby D at bat
Desperation left on base
Flailing epic fail

I have to admit that I really like the kid. Gonna miss him, hope he gets picked up somewhere. Kind of an awkward time with about two weeks left in the Woo Sox season.

Dalbec was a good pitcher at U. of Arizona (2.65 ERA in 72 games) but has always said he doesn't want to return to the mound. Wonder if he might try to become a two-way player? He hasn't pitched since 2016, but could be worth a shot.

I hope he gets another shot somewhere, but not having to roster him will be a sign of progress for the organization.

Thanks for the 25 homers in 2021 Bobby! We wouldn't have made the playoffs that year without him, and that postseason was so much fun.

He hit 33 HRs in his first 497 big league at-bats, with 94 RBI, an .819 OPS, and a 114 OPS+.

Then he completely cratered: in his next 449 at bats, he hit only 14 HRs, with a .599 OPS, 65 OPS+, and 189 strikeouts.

In September of the miserable Covid 2020 “season” I was on a rented houseboat on Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, listening to Sox-Yanks thru the MLB app. Houck was tossing a shutout and Bobby D was bashing homers — 10 in that call-up, iirc. Sox were lousy, but Bobby D brought some joy.

I’m sorry it faded so fast for him.

Thanks for the memories, Bobby, and good luck in the future.

I'm sure Bobby will get a minor league deal somewhere. Hopefully the new organization will fix his bat and he'll be back in the bigs....

Best of luck Bobby!!!!!

Good luck to him. I always hoped he would make in in the majors. At least he made some money with the Sox. Including his signing bonus he earned over $3,000,000 with the Sox. I hope he catches on with another team....or maybe in Japan.

Dalbec definitely seems to have the profile of a guy who could go to Japan and become a folk hero, hitting 50 homers a year and striking out way too much.

Old friend Dom Smith was DFA'd last week... wonder if he'd consider stepping into Bobby D's shoes in Worcester?

Fun story, I got to see Dom Smith play for the Reds against the A's before labor day weekend. My 2 1/2 year old son was like daddy he's a red sox... I said he was, but not any more... He said do we still like him? I said yes son we do....

There's probably a million guys like him that have come through professional baseball in that we have a guy with one and a half tools (good power, probably better than average glove) and who had a pretty good amount of success in the minors but never could make it in the majors.

Yep, AAAA players are a thing. Playing in the major leagues is really hard.

Yup: 70 power, 35 hit is a profile that will get a lot of chances, just because 70 power, 40 hit is a fine player and 70 power, 45 hit is an occasional All Star.

I think it's more likely Dalbec is outrighted to the Worcester roster to step into his own shoes than it is Dom Smith comes back to play <checks calendar> two weeks worth of AAA games.

Possible dumb question: if Dalbec stays with the org, does he still get his (possible) arbitration hearing, or does removing him from the 40-man negate that?

I believe he has enough service time (minor and major) that he can elect free agency at the end of the season as long as he's not on the 40-man roster. Not unlike Christian Arroyo did last season after the Sox DFA'd and outrighted him to Worcester.

So much for the talk that the team was keeping him on the roster unfairly. If that was the case, another team would have moved for him.

I hope he starts using his voodoo doll collection for good, instead of for keeping his roster spot open.

The namesake of this website Sam Horn is perfect example. Except for that brief period when called up in 87.
