Blackberry Notifications Question

I have a fairly new Blackberry Bold for work crap.  All of a sudden the email notification icon stopped working properly.  Before, whenever I had any unread emails, I'd see that red asterisk thing next to the envelope icon.  Now the asterisk goes away after a little while.  So I'll assume I don't have any email but if I open it there are several sitting there from maybe an hour ago.  I checked the settings and I have it set to show email notifications.  Why does the asterisk disappear?

She doesn't have her iPhone yet. My phone is fine. My blackberry is generally fine. I just don't get this icon issue. Thanks for your contribution to the thread.
