Why would you start a thread with a quote showing Matthew Modine being both a thin skinned dick and having poor reading comprehension skills. It might have been a decent comeback if Simmons was ripping him, but he wasn't Modine is just a moron.

Isn't Simmons a fan of Modine?

He wrote about it in his column today, basically he was saying "How come they don't show Modine he's awesome" not knowing Modine has missed all the games.
Modine thought Simmons was saying he wasn't cool/famous enough to be shown and ripped him.
The moral..... actors can't read very well.

He made fun of him in the past for celebrating at a WNBA game.  And do you really think Simmons is "hurt" that they don't show Modine? You don't think that he is taking a slight jab at him?  It's fairly light-hearted but I think you are taking him too literal.  I just think the response was pretty funny.

Or Simmons can't write well.  It definitely seems like a rip on a b level celebrity.

Or it's Twitter and a random quick thought. Meaning both ways is usually difficult to convey in 140 characters unless you're Don Cherry and essentially post Greek epics about raccoons.

Loved the exchange. And generally any time Simmons is reminded he's not insulated by the internet.
Yup, and knowing how thin-skinned he can be, it's downright delightful to watch him twist after being publicly dissed by Matthew fucking Modine.

Simmons was using his brand if Bro Snark to insinuate that Matthew Modine isn't a big enough celeb to make the montage. The fact that Modine (apparently) hasn't been to MSG all season means that Simmons was just pulling it out of his ass.

It's a petty joke at Modine's expense, but why make it? It just seems childish at best and (as always) reeking of insecurity at worst. Why spend your time taking pot shots at other B level (and that's what Simmons is) celebs?

I didn't think his tweet was dissing Modene at all.  He'd seen him at games before, hadn't seen him lately, and wondered why on twitter.  That's how it read to me, anyway.

Simmons finally got around to watching Breaking Bad. Spoiler alert- he loves it.
Give him a few more weeks and he may even delve into Arrested Development and The Big Lebowski.

If you made it far enough in this week's podcast he did ask Greenwald what year Game of Thrones takes place--because he thought Game of Thrones took place on earth.

I didn't- I bailed since I'm not a GOT fan, but that is hilarious.

Wow, I had no idea he was doing his TV show bandwagon jumping shtick with Breaking Bad. So he's now done this with (IMO) each of the two greatest shows of all time - "I don't watch it, I don't care, whatever." A couple years later, after the whole country has realized and thoroughly discussed how great the show is - "Hold on a second, breaking news, THIS SHOW IS AMAZING!"

I love Simmons.  He has never seen The Matrix.  Unbelievable.

I noticed that too and meant to bring it up here. I can't even....how is that possible? Forget about the sequels, how the fuck did you live from 1999-2013 without seeing The Matrix?

Especially since he's a 'it's on cable all the time!' guys. The Matrix has been on cable TV 24 hours a day since about 2000, it's almost impossible to not see it.

He really dislikes sci-fi and fantasy--that's for nerds and Bill Simmons, WWF fan in college and baseball card collector into his 40s, is definitely not a nerd.

The Matrix is one of the few sci-fi movies that even non sci-fi people love, though. Even Pauline Kael loved it for Chrissake.
Bill likes to be 'the one guy who didn't see that hit thing' for whatever reason.

Apparently he has seen it.  My friend who clearly has too much time on his hands and a really good memory found this old Simmons article from Page 2 archives.

16. "The Matrix"
I wasn't an enormous fan of this movie -- too much Keanu, and it gave me a headache -- but the DVD contains a crapload of cool stuff. Apparently this is the best-selling DVD of all-time. Go figure.

I think it goes without saying that he probably hasn't seen the sequels.

Technology sure changes fast. I don't know when that article was written but he's letting folks know that the difference between VHS and DVD is huge.

According to the URL and the Christmas mention at the end, it's from December 20, 2001. That article and his eBay article from the same time period seem like they're from a century ago.

edit: heh, that DVD article also has a Matthew Modine insult.

And that was in 2001. I don't know anyone who had seen that movie before 2003 or so. I rented it from blockbuster on VHS in 2000 or so on a whim.

Funny you say that - I remember going to a friend's house in the early 2000's so they could show off their new home theater system. We watched.....The Matrix.

The scene where Trinity and Neo walk in through the metal detectors with approximately seven hundred guns was how I demonstrated the power of my Yamaha system in 2003-4.  That and the THX opening credits thing.

In 2001, for a lot of people, maybe not, unless you were really into Poker before Moneymaker blew things up in 2003.  Is that what you mean?  Because it definitely is a classic (now).  Love that movie.  Of course, I have an extreme and maybe unhealthy love of playing NL Texas Hold Em' on a daily basis.

Although, Good Will Hunting came out in 97 (so Matt Damon had already broke out), and this has Ed Norton in it ... it might have been kind of popular amongst the demographic of his readers.  I'm forgetting the details around that time.
