I see the outside opinion is the Dodgers fleeced us, not surprised by this prevailing opinion.

But Price is a negative asset... Mookie is a near-lock for at least 5 WAR, but who knows beyond that... feels overall like a fair trade to me
If the Dodgers don't win it all and then Mookie signs with Baltimore, will it still be a fleecing? <Rhetorical question>

$27 million on Betts and $15.5(if it's half of the $31 that counts towards the CBT)for Price so its $42 million. But still a significant savings on the 2020 CBT count. Then also saving $15.5 in the next 2 years.
Can they structure the Price cash or does it have to average out evenly? Like could they subsidize $25 million this year and then 8.5 and 8.5 in the next two years? No reason not to get right up to the cap this year.

Is there any doubt Mookie will put up an AS/MVP season, or of Price being the kind of guy that will pitch the season with a chip on his shoulder and be a top-10 NL starter?

Gatorballs probably hurts himself in ST and the other guy will end up half of some mediocre OF platoon.
You don't like the trade. Not sure why you keep giving weird, "nicknames," of his last name. It's not funny nor creative.

Everything else aside, this makes me incredibly sad. I loved watching Mookie Betts play baseball for the Sox. I would have enjoyed doing so for many more years.
Yup. Probably the best position player they've ever developed and super likable to boot.

Lost count of the number of times Bloom made deals for TB that initially were head scratchers...more often than not, they turned out to work in Rays favor. He's not immune to making a bad deal, but I've watched him from day one in TB and he knows what he is doing. Let's check back in a few years and see where we stand.

Also if the savings goes towards signing Springer next winter that’s part of this equation.
Absolutely. Much rather see if we can get Springer at 6/180 than mookie at 12/420.
I can see Springer sliding into at least a Part time DH role halfway through and staying healthy for the length of such a deal

He needs to put up two more 8+ WAR seasons just to match Boggs' first 8 (or, seven and a partial) seasons. And if Mookie ages like Boggs did, the Sox will have dodged a massive bullet by not signing him to a mega deal.

So we're paying 1/2 of David price's contract? 3/32 = 3/16 for the Dodgers. Eovaldi is sitting at 3/17 - I don't know why but this math feels bad to me

So gang, we’re going to have to spend some of that found cash for a starter ASAP. Unless you relish the idea of Hector Velazquez every five days.
Collin McHugh as spot starter/opener/bullpen piece? I think he gets good grades on his curveball spin rate if you're in to that sort of thing.

Taijuan Walker rehabbing in AAA? The cupboard is pretty bare.

I do wish the Sox had pursued some potential bounce back bullpen arms like Carl Edwards Jr. or Pedro Strop. Hector Rondon would have been a solid bullpen piece as well.

This trade can be the result of past mismanagement and an example of good current management at the same time. Plan A should always be not to fall down a well. Once you’re down there, that’s the starting point for all subsequent plans.

here's an interesting line from Ken (bolded below)

https://theathletic.com/1579100/2020/02/04/rosenthal-mookie-betts-still-has-his-eye-on-free-agency-even-if-a-trade-changes-the-equation/
He is going free. Players who attain six years of service, as Betts will by the end of the season, have a right to go free. Betts’ rejection of the Red Sox’s various overtures does not mean he disliked Boston (he has never indicated as much). Nor does it mean the Sox should have just thrown more money at him (some club officials thought $300 million was a risk for a 5-foot-9, 180-pound outfielder who might wear down physically). But now the entire equation changes, for both the team and the player.

Glad Price kept it together when it counted most but that deal was so disappointing. Not even 600 IP across 4 seasons. Glad to be out from under it.

Who’s suggesting a “massive overpay” at the deadline? But this return, or a reasonable facsimile, seems like it could have been acquired then. And if they made a deep run this, you live with the compensatory pick , and starting the reset next off season. October baseball is really valuable.

There's zero chance the savings isn't going towards signing a superstar in the next couple years, they didn't just become the rays, they're still running a top 5 payroll even after this trade

Not sure Price was "worth" the money, but he put up a 3.84 era for Boston and was absolute frigging NAILS in the 2018 playoffs to help win a WS. If you had told me that they'd get that out of him for four years and then he'd be gone, I'd have taken that.

Brusdal should be in the majors right?

This kind of reminds me of the Pats trading Chandler Jones and Jamie Collins while keeping Dont’a. Not because they were Mookie level, but 2 years ago we had both Mookie, JBJ and Xander all on the verge of getting expensive. The assumption was Xander was gone because of Boras.

instead we kept him and likely JBJ(for now) and traded the one I expected to keep

One half of this deal has been injured to some degree in all of the last three seasons. That's quite the dice throw.

So, effective next year the only money the Red Sox will have on the balance sheet for players not on the team should be 1 year of Pedroia at $12m and two years of Price for $32m give or take. That still sucks but there is finally some light at the end of the tunnel that started with Panda, Allen Craig, and Rusney.

Has there been any indication yet that the Sox will turn around and use some of the money newly saved to add some players this offseason?

And, while we're at it, has there been any indication they're done dumping salaries?

No, he should start the year in AAA. He only has about 60 IP above A ball, and we want to develop him as a starter. I'd be shocked if he starts on the MLB roster.
