I've always wondered about things such as this. Is it tampering? Can teams actually make an offer during this window?
The deal’s not done, and those teams got a real look at what Boston would accept. Why shouldn’t other teams be able to swoop in, especially when they can all see that Friedman is unwilling to part with any of his own prospects? Bloom can try and work it out because LA still looks like the best opportunity to get something done based on talent and budget, but if another owner wants to make a splash, Bloom isn’t honor-bound to stay locked in a staring contest with his old boss

If Chaim Bloom broke Dodger fan hearts and netted us Luis Patino in one fell swoop, I will spend the rest of my life defending his beautiful honor. Regardless of how Patino turns out.

SD trades away 2 OF, Hmmmm.
They still have five OFs (Pham, Grisham, Cordero, Myers, Naylor) plus prospects and they've been trying to move Margot (and Hedges) all winter, but agreed that they potentially have more room for Mookie now.

I wouldn't think so since its only being reported as agreed upon, its not officially done. It would very likely be viewed as bad faith, especially if there were no hold up

Seriously though I think this would have been very simple and straight forward if Friedman wasn’t insane.

Oddly good trade for Preller there, and he shaves about $2m off the team’s 2020 payroll as well.

Pagan’s on his fourth team in four years.

Not too serious and too be honest the I hated the the potential Padres deal. And reading chawson's post, it's not going to happen. I'm not sure why not having Margot would stop them for at least trying.

Pagan had a .228 BABIP last year along with a 34% GB rate and gives up a ton of jacks. Expect some serious regression.
Doubt we'd want an RP.
Pagan held hitters to a .221 expected wOBA last year, which was quite literally best in baseball among pitchers who threw more than 20 innings.

Why on Earth would we want Manny Margot, he's 25 now and got 4th OF written all over him? Steamer projection of 88 wRC+; ZIPS 91 OPS+ No thanks.
I’m with you, I definitely don’t want the Sox to trade for Manny Margot. Was responding to the conjecture that Preller was making room for Mookie.

Not really picking on you, but you don't see many threads--well, not often---where a guy is at once described as baffling or insane, and as being the best GM in the game over the past decade or so.

As for myself, I would guess that Friedman might be far more willing to kick in that second prospect if Price is out of the equation, which means if Bloom really wants to deal with LA, he's looking at one guy (and maybe a lottery ticket) or the salary relief.

If one year of Mookie were worth so much more than LA is offering, wouldn’t a few teams be lining up to beat the leaked offer?

If the Twins are out, and LA now knows what it'll take, IMO it is either Verdugo+Gray or Verdugo+Gonsolin+smaller piece (Uceta?)

You have to figure in that we also want the team to eat a very large amount of money.

Right, dumping Price is part of the package.

Verdugo, Graterol and absorbing Price is the return for Mookie. No other team is apparently willing to beat that value.

Friedman can kick rocks IMO. If he's unwilling to deal 2 prospects for Betts, then they aren't serious. It's not like Lux and May are in play for us, that much is clear from what we've heard. If he's trying yet again to get another team involved...kill the deal and move onto other teams that have an interest in Betts and Price.

A-fucking-men. Feels now like he’d rather be seen overtly to have won the trade than actually get the player. Deal from your surplus.

I don't know if we do, but the rumors were that he was in the Padres offer. Now if the Sox said they had no interest in him, then this deal wouldn't suggest anything.

I think the issue here is that the list of those teams begins and ends with LA. Price isn't an asset in this transaction. He's the case of Rye you buy from your distributor if you want to buy a case of Scotch as well.

I wonder what kind of package we’d get from the Dodgers if every team in baseball didn’t know that Red Sox fans were incapable of seeing Price as one of the the top 30 or so starters in the league, which barring some odd injury and pitch-tipping issues, he is.

I disagree. I think Price would really help the Dodgers.

Edit: Apologies, never traded in that lexicon before, won’t again. That word rings British and asexual to my ear, but, regardless, message received.

David Price is 34 years old and has thrown roughly 350 innings over the past three seasons. Can he come back and throw 175 innings and be a 3+ WAR/season guy again? Sure, maybe. But picking up half his contract for the privilege of finding out is a luxury that very few teams can afford, and it doesn't have anything to do with how we see him.

This is where I am as well. David Price at 3-$48 is extremely fairly priced. He is not a negative asset at that price point. If the Red Sox didn’t have Price and could sign him for that deal, I’d be ecstatic. Hyun-Jin Ryu is 33, just as injury prone, and got 4-$80. if other teams view Price subsidized to that extent as a liability, then keep him until they come to their senses.

or, as I said earlier, maybe the Red Sox have seen his medicals and think he’s toast, and are trying to put one past other teams.

for once a reasonable take by Bowden. come on Friedman.
It leaves the Dodgers way too thin in their rotation, Buehler/Kershaw/Price/Urias/May and Wood, then maybe Jimmy Nelson?

I'm not a Dodgers expert but they can't give up all three of Stripling, Maeda and Gonsolin, I don't think. Bowden's deal could make sense without the LAD/MIN part, though, although Gonsolin/Downs seems like decidedly more than Graterol, so maybe just one of them and a lesser third piece.

If its the Dodgers straight up the Sox already know the price and its not going to change. Alex Verdugo and they'll probably take more than half of Prices deal for Betts and Price. Friedman isn't adding a damn thing.

As much as I get the logic of the Mookie trade,

- Giving away Price and subsidizing the contract is ugly; I don't like the guy but when your starters include two pitchers who were injured a lot last season, one who had an ERA in the 5s, and Mr. X, it's not as if Price is a luxury item;

- I hate that Verdugo seems like a piece of crap;

- Mookie is one of the best players in the game and is a joy to root for; and

- Given the crappy return, I'd rather roll with Mookie and take the risk that they can't sign him and get less when he leaves.

I understand that keeping him and Price risks a terrible tax situation and that this team is not likely a WS contender with them. But all things considered, I hope the Sox just back out of the deal.

Really, the biggest concern I have is that teams in the future wont deal with them if they back out, but that seems like an overstated concern to me.
