The inclusion of Downs, if accurate, makes the last week worth it

When this all started... I thought Verdugo and Downs was a total pipe dream.

Verdugo was a consensus top 25 prospect who played at an “All Star” level his first year in the majors. 5 years of control.

Downs is at a position of need in the system and has the type of power you dream of from a middle infielder. Top 50 type prospect. Not far from major league contribution here.

The fact that are also unloading $50mm with Price on this seems amazing.

Hell yeah, love the fact we got Downs.

21 year old shortstop who hit 24 HR's in mostly high A but a little bit of AA. Also had 24 SB between the two levels.

56 plate appearances at AA he had OBP/SLG/OPS of 429/688/1117

Sucks they couldn't have included a non Verdugo guy after all the shit that's come to light about him. What a downgrade from one of the best players to ever play for the Red Sox

I would have really liked a pitcher but Downs is probably the 2B here in 2022 or maybe before if his Power is legit. Wong is a good get.

Can we flip Verdugo for pitching now? Preferably some without as much baggage as he has?

This is grotesque and appalling and frankly I'm not sure I can root for this team anymore.

You were given an opportunity at a do-over. To not take this disgusting person Verdugo on your team. And you chose to do it AGAIN.

I'm beside myself.

Does the inclusion of Beyoncé move the needle on this? Did well at AA as a 23 year old Catcher. Not a prototypical C body though. Blake Swihart 2.0?

I have to admire your commitment to staying on-brand.

I'll assume Downs is now #1 in our system and Wong is top 5? 23 year old catcher who hit 24 homers isn't too shabby.

Displaced
Connor Wong, a 3rd round pick in 2017 out of University of Houston. OPS'd .997 in AA last year in 40 games after a promotion from single A. he played 24 of those games at C, 10 at 3B and 6 at 2B, so he's listed as C/INF prospect.

Here’s what Fangraphs said about him in May 2019
>>An athletic, multi-positional player who spent his early college career at shortstop, Wong now sees time behind the plate, as he did throughout most of college, and at second and third base. Like most of the hitters in this org, he hits the ball in the air a lot and strikes out at a concerning rate. That, along with a few defensive flaws that may still be corrected with time, especially as he learns to handle upper-level stuff in the dirt, probably limit Wong to a unique kind of utility role or a backup catcher and infielder role similar to Austin Barnes’, which is a bit better than just a flat 40 FV prospect.<<

I’m hoping the assessment is dated, because it screams back-up utility player.

no idea who connor wong is, other than he's a 3rd round pick from 2017 who killed the ball in 40 games last year after getting moved up from high a, seems like a good thing

edit: and he's played 8 positions in the minors, which seems even better

I think Wong might be closer to 10-15 range. Downs vs Casas probably depends on how you weight ceiling vs floor.

Semantics question ... if there's no exchange between the Twins and Red Sox, is it still a three-team trade?

Friedman did pretty well if you look at it this way. Traded Puig and Alex Wood for Josiah Gray and Jeter Downs. Signed back Alex Wood on a one year deal. Traded Jeter Downs in a package for the second best player in baseball.

I see that a good chunk of Downs' hitting success came in the Cally league. Is that league still super hitter friendly?

I still haven't recovered from the Lancaster JetHawks experience. Aaron Bates was HoF bound, man.

My original hope was Verdugo, Gray, and Ruiz ... winding up with Verdugo, Downs, and a different catching prospect in Wong feels pretty good to me. I wish there wasn't the baggage of the assault stuff with Verdugo, but I also wasn't there and (unlike some here) I'm not going to burn him at the stake without knowing what happened. We still need some pitching, but Taijuan Walker, Colin McHugh, and others are out for the taking. Hate losing Betts, but I'm still going to root for the Sox and I'm going to hope they put forth a monster bid for him as a free agent. Play ball!

Getting under the luxury tax cap this year makes it more likely they'll sign Betts again in ten months. Maybe it's wishful thinking but that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Wow, so the Dodgers are getting a comp B pick instead of Graterol?

The Red Sox absolutely did the right thing here. Good for Bloom

Some pretty basic stats on Wong's defense:

High A - 59 games, 11 errors, 8 passed balls, 31% caught stealing (25 of 81)
AA - 24 games, 4 errors, 2 passed balls, 52% caught stealing (16 of 31)

So he actually improved a bit at AA defensively
