Doesn't this have the earmark of a Tampa trade? Take a guy who may be overrated and get as many wild cards as you can for him - in this case 5?

It's hard to say for sure without knowing the identities of the PTBNLs, but I've been playing around with the trade simulator website, and this trade reflects a valuation fro Benintendi that is considerably higher than the one on that website.

Edit to clarify: I could get the values to square with the reported moving players and cash if Benintendi's projected surplus value is in the +12-15m range, instead of the 4.6m they assign him.

Not just a TB trade. A good trade for a team that needs more better prospects. Writ small, Bloom thinks Beni won't be much good, KC doesn't agree.

Given that the Sox cleared some salary, I'm assuming they have other stuff brewing. Or one or more of the PTBNL as suggested is an MLBer. I'm all for loading up on lottery tickets. Franchy is entertaining to watch, if nothing else.

I love it. It would have looked bold at the time, but I think DD set the franchise back a few years by failing to trade Beni after the 2018 season when there were multiple FA outfielders available, but I’m glad Bloom could still get some value for him.

Anyone who was pushing for the Sox to sign Joc Pederson or Joey Gallo should be happy about Franchy Cordero. Absurd exit velocity off the bat.

Maybe I'm an optimist, but 4 lottery tickets and Franchy for Beni seems pretty reasonable for a team that is rebuilding its minor leagues.
I'm not a big fan of lottery tickets. I don't play the lottery - you rarely win. I'd prefer to get one decent prospects to four lower level lottery tickets.

They also have Benintendi being a full time player (vs Cordero platooning) and putting up almost twice as much WAR.
Bref has Beni with like 70 more plate appearances. I’m not saying Franchy is better. I’m saying it might be closer than it appears.

They didn't clear much, Beni is $6.6M minus $2.8M that BOS is paying, Cordero is 800K and the pitcher they signed today is $1.2M, so around $2M more space than they had yesterday by my rough calculations.

Is it being reported anywhere that the PTBNLs are not on any teams’ 40-man? Trying to get the sense whether they’re necessarily minor leaguers.

Or Bloom made a convincing case that Benintendi is *not* going to be better than he was in 2019, and in fact will be even worse in 2021 so let's get something for him while we can.
Too bad we can't get a successful ownership group around here.
He's a pigeon. He pops in from time to time and just shits all over the place. Always best not to feed pigeons.

what really felt like the Rays to me was Cordero - analytics darling who has 3 years of control, dirt cheap this year due to not putting it together yet (800k!)... low OBP, high SLG mold...

Feels like we’re paying the Royals for arguably our third best position player in exchange for a bunch of lottery tickets. Beni had fWar of 2, 4.4, and 2 the last three non-pandemic seasons. He was a top prospect before that. Why isn’t this selling low?

So Cots had them at about 8 mil under before today - with these moves that would put them at 9.5-10mil under.

paying 40% of Beni to the Royals, and the Mets currently getting the best prospect by far in the overall deal, should mean the PTBNLs should amount to something more than the "usual" PTBNL, at least from the Mets. but we'll have to wait on that.

if a mod could change title to add 3 PTBNLs and not "at least" or "developing", that would do.

What's a best guess at JBJ's AAV right now? Is it assumed he's getting 10 mil-ish a year? Boras is his agent and the Mets are still out there.

Also, when are the numbers for the tax calculated? End of year? So could you start the year over and end up under through various moves throughout the season? (like moving an ottavino if he's doing well and the season isn't?)

Yeah there's no way we're not getting a decent prospect from the Mets when you consider what they gave up and what they received. It has to be a quality prospect.

People in this thread are using the term "lottery ticket" differently than I would use it.

Winckowski, for example, isn't a lottery ticket to me. He's age-appropriate in full-season ball, and while he looks like a guy who should be able to start in the majors barring injury, his ceiling isn't especially high unless he takes a real step forward in terms of strikeout rates. He's an okay pitching prospect who looks like he could be a depth starter or swingman-type. Useful!

To me, lottery ticket implies a player with not only a much wider range of possible outcomes, but an all-or-nothing character. They almost have to be teenagers. A lot of international free agents are lottery tickets. Toolsy sluggers drafted out of high school are lottery tickets. That kind of thing.

Most of them wash out, but a few of them become really great. You sift through a lot of Tim Beckhams and Mickey Moniaks to get a chance at a Ken Griffey, Jr.

Franchy’s stance and swing look a lot like Cano to me. Really effortless power.

This is the first move Bloom’s made I’ve been excited by. Tons of upside here and he could be a real building block.
This would be a lot more encouraging if we weren't talking about a 26 year old. How many guys manage to "figure it out" and become major league regulars at 26 after failing to do so previously?

As late entries to this trade jump in, the Red Sox will also be sending Fenway Park to Frank McCourt, and cash to local slumlord Spiro Abrunezzi for a Poland Springs water cooler jug filled with heavily oxidized pennies, and a derelict strip mall in Holyoke, MA. Fenway to be bulldozed in favor of retail/office space. Team to play in the parking lot of the strip mall. Team already planning Tetanus Shot night.

As others have said. PTBNL are not what they used To be. Especially in the covid era.

there has been no MILB season in a year. So if you announce and finalize the trade/players now you are trading for wildcards even if they played in the hodgepodge MILB “season” last year.

because those players would have either played in that so called “MILB season” last Year or have not played in professional baseball in a year.

either way scouting reports for most MILB players are probably pretty outdated and I bet they(bloom/Sox) want to see how these players actually perform in legit MILB action (against other teams and not scrimmages) prior to actually trading for them. Because right now how the scouting report says they performed in 2019 could be worse or better than how they will perform this year especially with a year off for most of them.

Beni never should have bulked up, cut his hair, and claimed the Ring for his own.

I think most of Bloom's deals are going to come down to scouting assessments and the development of the lottery tickets.
Those new scouts had better be damn good at their jobs.

Jorge Soler, J.D. Martinez, Justin Smoak, J.D. Davis, Chris Davis, Brian Dozier, Ji-Man Choi, Tyler White, Josh Bell, Randy Arozarena, Max Muncy, Dee Gordon, Allen Craig, Logan Morrison, Carlos Peña, Jean Segura, Yandy Diaz, Tommy La Stella, Colin Moran, Jeimer Candelario, Mitch Haniger, DJ LeMahieu, Teoscar Hernandez, Mike Moustakas and Charlie Blackmon to name a few. Our current plan for 1B is hoping a 26-year-old figures it out.

There was that guy named David Arias too (okay I think technically 2003 was his age 27 season).

I'm curious how this works. Presumably, they have their eye on a couple guys that were discussed? What if the sox scouts look at those guys and aren't interested. Do they still negotiate for other players in the organization? It's an odd concept, particularly if they are expecting a decent asset from the Mets and not just a random A baller.

3rd best? He was at best probably the 6th best player in the lineup. I mean their lineup has 3 or 4 guys it wouldn't shock anyone to be all stars this year

This makes sense to me. You’re playing for Cordero, Renfroe and to a lesser extent Arroyo to break out if possible so you definitely want them to get as many PAs as they need. That means releasing Cordero/Renfroe from a strict platoon and shifting Kiké between 2B/CF pretty fluidly.

The idea that Renfroe should only face lefties has kind of calcified over the winter, but he’s only two years removed from an .803 OPS against RHP.

My guess is that the teams agreed on a list of players for the Sox to choose from mid-season.

From Mass Live:
“We have frameworks in place with the clubs as to how and when we’re going to do that,” Bloom said. “There’s not names of the players we’re embargoing right now.”

Though Bloom wouldn’t discuss the specific frameworks, it’s likely that the Red Sox and the other clubs have agreed to lists comprised of a certain number of players Boston can choose from as well as a deadline for when the decisions have to be made. Delaying the decisions on the specific players will allow the Red Sox to have time to scout Mets and Royals minor-leaguers this spring and summer after not having a chance to see them play in 2020, when the minor-league season was canceled.

Bloom said it’s going to “take a little while” for the players to be named and that a resolution should not be expected until minor-leaguers start playing later this year.

“This does happen from time to time, even when we’re not in the midst of a global pandemic,” he said. “Having time to work through these things is helpful. Certainly, with what we’ve been going through, I think it’s more helpful and more critical to us.”

seems like a lateral, or perhaps even downgrade to me, I don't understand why the Mets were involved, who are they sending to K.C.
