Behind the B

In the past, people throughout the Bruins organization have said they would not want to be on HBO’s behind the scenes “24/7″ series, and having the show air on NESN would suggest that there won’t be much negative stuff shown, but one look at the preview makes you think that the B’s just may have changed their minds.

There’s a clip of Claude Julien dropping an F-bomb between periods, video of Cam Neely asking a player (presumably Rich Peverley) to waive their no-trade clause and Peter Chiarelli interviewing a draft prospect among other things.

The most interesting part was saved for last, as Chiarelli, sitting at a table with other decision-makers, is shown saying, “In my mind, guys, his time is done here in Boston.” He could have been talking about anybody, and hopefully the show will reveal whether the conversation was about Tyler Seguin, Peverley, Andrew Ference, Nathan Horton, Jaromir Jagr or somebody else.

The show will be narrated by Denis Leary. The first episode will air eight times from Sept. 9 to Sept. 28 and will have 13 episodes over the course of the season. It’s too soon to say, but this show has WEEI.com running diary written all over it.

Finally NESN doing something useful. Giggity.

Looking forward to this. It looks like it's going to be similar to the NFL Hard Knocks and NHL 24/7 series.

Looks great but I'll be surprised if both Neely talking about the no-trade and Chia saying "his time in Boston is done" aren't one in the same and both directed towards Thomas.  I think they are just teasing this well.

Still interested in the locker room stuff which really can't be edited.

Neely has said in the past on his weekly interview with Felger & Mazz that he'd want to be a part of something like this. Claude was always leery of something like this but maybe having the camera crew in for Patrice's NHL 36 episode showed him that it wasn't too bad. Plus this is a NESN production so I'm sure the team has final say on the editing.

I love Oil Change without having any emotional attachment to the Oilers, so I am really excited for this. This is the kind of thing NESN should be doing more of, leveraging their relationship with the Sox and Bruins to show behind the scenes stuff that you can't see anywhere else.

Well how about this for a surprise, Behind the B was Neely's idea: http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2013/09/05/nesn-new-behind-program-cam-neely-brainchild/e8NOgXxYNJNRIy2NjobKcP/story.html

Right, it’s not Belichick. But how about Cam Neely, the Bruins president? Turns out he enjoyed the “24/7” series so much a few years ago that an idea began germinating: What if we documented the Bruins behind the scenes and put it on NESN?

“I watched ‘24/7,’ my family was into it, my kids and my wife,’’ said Neely. “And for me, I felt like, if my family is really interested in sitting down and watching this as a family, there are plenty more out there that are doing that.

“And then after an episode aired, you’d hear people talking about it, commenting on it, and even the casual fan tuned in to see what it was all about. It made me really think about how we could do something like this with our team and NESN. I really wanted to do some kind of show.”
Neely said he began kicking around the idea two seasons ago. He soon signed off on buying a few extra cameras for the Bruins’ in-house production team, and had them begin filming footage midway through the 2011-12 season, with the intent of putting the show together last season.

“But we scrapped it for the time being because of the uncertainty of the lockout,” Neely said.
“We got that comfort level with the coaching staff to make sure they were OK with being around more cameras,’’ said Neely, “and to make sure it wasn’t going to disrupt anything.

“Plus, knowing that we would edit it ourselves, that was reassuring to anyone who might have not been comfortable at first about what might end up on air. That was extremely important, for them to know that nothing that would air to cause concern for anybody.”

So while it’s not exactly all-access and entirely unfiltered, it is nonetheless fascinating. Bruins diehards will love the insight gleaned from watching Neely, general manager Peter Chiarelli, and others work behind the scenes on the machinations of offseason moves, including the Tyler Seguin-Loui Eriksson trade.

Anyone kind enough to recap what was said? I tuned in late and missed it.

(The Truth jersey behind Iggy was some nice production work).

Trading Seguin was basically unanimous. They all but call him Phil Kessel redux, and they even note that they were right when they traded Andrew Raycroft and they were right about trading Phil Kessel. The choice quotes were Benning saying "we're winners, not baby sitters," and later Scott Bradley says "If he gives us half of what Kane gave them, we win the Stanley Cup." Chiarelli initially tells them he's shopping Seguin to try and retain Horton.

The front office stuff was fascinating, but these generic fluff pieces on individual players are kind of meh.

What I expected, we knew they were doing some fluff, the meetings more than made up for it. Sucks they didn't show the Ignila contract come together.

The segments with John Whitesides and the exit interviews were pretty good as well.

Iggy is very likeable, and appears in excellent condition for an old guy.

I'm trying to remember Keith Gretsky's exact comment about Seguin, but it was something like, "the effort's there but always a half second late."

The production seemed somewhat amateurish. And please get another sponsor. Those Alex and Ani commercials were lame.

Yeah, there was enough to show that they were pretty obviously ready to deal Seguin but there was a LOT more they could have talked about/shown if they wanted to bad mouth the guy on the way out of town. I thought it was handled pretty well.

Whitesides was awesome. "start again at 1, this time keep the count"

The camera work sucked. Holy unsteady cam. And unnecessary zooming back and forth. Geesh.

It was an okay start, I'm fairly confident it'll pick up more during the season.

I got a kick out of Krejci taping his golf clubs like a stick.

Overall I enjoyed it. The fluff with the players at home was alright, but I could have done without it. I guess there wasn't much content this time of year to fill an hour although I agree with SoxScout that it would have been nice to see more of the Iginla trade (leading up to it rather than a recap) as well as the free agent contact talks. Hope once the season starts it fills up with more hockey action and less fluff.

Agreed, very junior varsity camera work. But now I know what that little room up the stairs at Ristuccia looks like inside, and I love seeing the d-camp kids get some attention.

Could they have crammed more commercials in? I'd be surprised if there was more than 40 minutes of content.

I was so excited for this, and it was... Ugh. A complete letdown.

I thought it was good, not great. The fluff pieces were obviously coming, but I thought they over did it. They should've stuck to just the Iginla and Loui pieces to introduce the new guys. The front office stuff was awesome and the Whitesides/Dev Camp stuff was really good.

I wish they included more about the Seguin trade. They jumped from the brass having discussions, and Chiarelli talking to another team on the phone about a deal to Loui walking into Cam's office. I wish they included a few discussions about the final deal. I know they aren't going to show negotiations, but something like Chiarelli and the group talking about the final deal.

Edit: I also thought it was pretty amazing how devastated they were about Horton leaving. Chia was absolutely crushed when he hung up the phone with Horton's agent.

This surprised me too.  I thought it was well assumed he was leaving.

I could have done without the Loui Eriksson house hunting segment.  Lots of good stuff though.  They look great in the intro.

I thought the best part was when they were evaluating the prospects behind closed doors, and all the while, the cameraman is going full-on stalker - changing angles and randomly zooming.

I don't think Grzelcyk was nearly as freaked out about them shitting on his conditioning as he was about the creep with the camera three inches away from his dick.

Episode 4 starts in a few minutes...trailer is basically Claude doing a Bruce Boudreau in the locker room between periods and Chara telling someone on Pittsburgh that the next time he gets slashed, be prepared to fight.
