My buddy Nick runs that company. BLPA DEX tournaments, yea?

I really want to do one of their international ones, someday.
Yeah he’s here, I met him last night at the bar. A few guys from my men’s league do 2-3 a year with BLPA. I’m pretty hungover for our games today but it’s been a blast. They are doing Czech Republic this year I think there are spots still.

Tragic hockey story. A kid who came up thru the same youth program my kids play in died after an injury sustained in a high school hockey game this afternoon.

One year later, almost happened in Fairfield County again. Army player in a game vs Sacred Heart. No neck guard. Luckily a much happier outcome this time.

Would you skip a beer league playoff game because you have tickets to an NHL game?

JFC!

OK, so I'm in central NY, roughly on a dividing line between Sabres and Rangers fans. On 3/11 the NYR play in Buffalo. Two of the best players on my team have tickets for this damn game which, of course, is the same time as the first round of our beer league playoffs.

It is going to bury us to lose them and, finally this year, we have wrapped up no worse than a tie for first place already, with 3 weeks left in the regular season. By a huge margin this is our strongest team, playing the best hockey we've played in the seven years I've been on the team, all to get screwed by an infatuation for Tage Thompson and Artemi Panarin!

But even going into the playoffs as the 1 seed, the 8 seed will be strong enough to give us trouble if these two players are out. Why couldn't it be the benders who got the tickets?

And in both cases it is, as I understand it, their families that doomed us: one guy got the tickets for Christmas, the other guy for his birthday.

My teams best player is a Bills fan, and missed the Championship game for a Bills playoff game.

We won without him. You can too.

One saving grace is that the league instituted a new 8v9 play-in game the night before the quarterfinals. We should be getting a bottom tier team of beer leaguers on the second night of a back to back. I'm still worried.

Why?

I play down here in NoVa. Full time on a UC team, and sub on a B team. Age and injuries have really slowed me down the last 4ish years.

I recently started playing goalie, as well - cause why the hell now. I’m a not good LC goalie but decent in D league.
TSC - are you in a house league or Hockey North America?

House. I play out of PWICE.

I’ll get up to the St James or Reston occasionally though.
Hockey North America used to play in Reston, but that was many years ago. Now, just at Cabin John, Wheaton and Rockville. It is a pretty good organization with about 50 teams across 3 divisions (and several sub-divisions).

I liked HNA. It seemed decently run and they kept good stats! Looks like they are still around?

edit: Wow they have all the historical stuff up. Should show my kids this. Their dad used to tear up high C/low B!

They are still going strong. I played and officiated for many years - it all came to a grinding halt after breaking my leg 2x in 12 months.

Damn, 2x in 12 months? That's rough. My buddy broke his ankle in an HNA game, came back 8 months later and broke the other one :-(

The scariest part of that is it was :::gulp::: 15+ years ago.

chippy-and-way-too-rough-for-beerleague
The only knock on the league I have, I guess, is that the refs we get are often obviously focused on keeping the clock moving and so games are really chippy. Last year I also played as a regular sub in a USAHockey league in Ithaca with my brother and that league played running time and was far less violent.
Would you skip a beer league playoff game
In a twist I didn't see coming in this story, I got myself a one game suspension this week, applied in the first round of the playoffs.

This season has just gotten completely out of hand with the 'play on' routine from the refs. Saturday night I got blind sided starting to skate back to the play coming out of the offensive zone. Guy kicked my legs out and drove me into the ice. My neck hurts and I still have a wee bit of a headache and my elbow is weirdly banged up from slamming the ice. So I got up and crosschecked him and got a 'retaliation' suspension. He got a 2 minute roughing penalty.

It's kinda a big deal. We go into the playoffs as the #1 seed but now will play #8 shorthanded because of this and the Rangers thing (see above) and #8 is really only the 8 seed because they had attendance problems. 8 has to win a play-in game vs. 9, which they will. Hopefully that tires them out the night before.

I am considering making this my last season all of the sudden. Some of it is that I'm 50 and I can't keep playing like such a maniac but a lot of it is that I don't know that I can keep playing in such a goony league. I'm just too old to get crosschecked into the goal post/ slashed in the kidneys/tripped in the open ice just 'cause every weekend.

And, apparently, the lack of calls has turned me into a monster myself. I'm both pissed and sort of embarrassed (what have I become!). I've had three penalties this season -- this one and two minors. All three were retaliation for non-calls (for the record: one was a matching roughing where a guy wouldn't let go of me and they didn't blow the whistle until I turned around to push back and one was a slash after, IDK, about the 5th slash in a row while I'm standing around in the slot in garbage time of a blowout).

Edit: Lost. Out. In the end, with injuries, my suspension and this stupid Rangers game we were down six players and five of our best players -- our top two scorers and our two best defenders. We had no chance. Talked during the game with a guy on the team that we played for my crosschecking penalty. Guy says, about the guy who took me out, "oh yeah, he likes to hit and mix it up a bit. He likes playing a little rough." Awesome.

Edit Edit: the league seems to have suspended the guy who hit me.

How do you guys get dressed?

For me: Jock (sans cup), feet socks, hockey socks…10 minute stretching routine…cup in, girdle, shell, skates, shins, elbows, jersey, bucket, gloves. I have some sort of caffeine about 30 minutes before and will hit the vape pen once or twice while usually having a beer during the process.

I love getting ready for hockey. It’s not quite as fun as the actual hockey or the post-hockey, but I love the routine.

I get dressed in like 5 mins, haha. Girdle, shin pads, socks, pants, skates, tape. Sit around for a bit if I have time. Then elbow pads, jersey, bucket, gloves. No beers until post game - I'm bad enough sober.

Pretty sure I'm still sober after my pre-game coors light, but I hear you lol

The age old debate of Shin v Skates first (tongue in or out, really) was what made me think of this

I assumed as much if you went Shins first.

I was barefoot for years but apparently my feet are gross and my skates were wretched smelling...thin socks and a blast of de-odorizer seem to have solved that.

Tongue out, just like Bertuzzi!

Girdle -- shell -- socks -- skates -- shins -- tape -- shirt -- elbows -- helmet -- gloves -- grab my stick (fall down forgetting to take off my skate guards)

No shoulders anymore. Gave them up about a year ago.

My girdle has a cup holder which I think is great.

I've been really happy with moving away from pants. I won't go back. Lighter, less bulky, fine protection.

I wonder, does anyone around here not wear a full mask? I skate with maybe 50% of people wearing only half shields or just helmets without even that.

I'm short and, IDK, a little weaselly. I get sticks into my face all the time. I just can't imagine not wearing full face protection (and I don't know if I could get the image of that guy from Winnipeg out of my head enough to go half shield).

Socks - Compression shorts - jock - shin guards - pants - skates - tape - shins over skates - elbows - jersey - helmet. No shirt under the jersey as that gets me too hot out there. Can do it in 5 minutes. Don’t like drinking pregame.

Full cage for me. Part because I have a pretty face and part because my cage is rusted enough I couldn’t take it off regardless.

I play in California so usually arrive in flip flops. Toss on some real knee-high socks, then it's jock, shins, hockey socks, breezers, skates (tongue out), chest pads, elbow pads, helmet, gloves. Usually wear a nike dry fit t-shirt under everything or else my nipples get sensitive :p

Used to go no visor - then stepped up to a more competitive league and went half visor for a few years. Saw one too many guys get pucks and sticks to the face and made the switch to full cage. I still prefer half visor but not enough to risk getting a deflected puck or a high stick to my grill. I also notice I play more aggressively with the full cage because I'm not worried about high sticks or getting in shooting lanes.

I'm weird, but - skate socks, jock, socks, skates, shinpads, girdle, shell, elbows, jersey, helmet, gloves.

I was a half shield guy for forever, but after my recent nose surgery, I'm full shield for now. I hate it. But my wife said she would kill me if my nose got fucked up again. It's been a huge adjustment, because I feel like guys who chirp behind a fullshield/cage are kind of chicken shit. When I had the half shield I had no such reservations. So now I have to keep my mouth shut.

I periodically skate with a guy at one of my regular drop ins who, although he's probably 60, shows up like a little kid in full gear.

Notably, he rocks a sort of Montreal Canadiens kit (black pants, but Canadien socks and a Molson beer shirt in the Canadien design/colors).

He gets off the ice, slips on his sneakers and drives home in the gear as well. It is... unique.

The people I see play in less than a cage are nuts imo. I've seen some fantastic hockey players take stitches or lose teeth from completely incidental shit like a puck running up their stick. Never mind the random joes. I got to go to work in the morning, I dont to need to get a multiple thousand dollar medical bill and spend a night in the er getting stitched up due an errant stick.

I may have told this story here before, but a guy on a team I used to play for up in MA lost an eye playing beer league.

Wasn't even on the ice, was on the bench and caught a puck. Was wearing a half shield.

Guy on my team lost half a tooth in a game. Total cost $4000. Teeth are ridiculously expensive. Well worth the investment in a cage.

Just here to say I had a round one playoff game last night (yes....THAT night) here in NorCal. I was getting dressed when the Panthers won in OT.

I was out on the ice when during a clearing attempt I legally batted the puck down (and I def don't have that kind of hand-eye coordination usually). Cycle behind net, other winger moves out and perfect pass into slot to center who rifled it home. The score was 3-2. 3rd period. I felt sick knowing the similarities

But unlike our hero's, we EN a goal for a 4-2 win.

The New York Times wrote up the Snoopy Senior hockey tournament today.

"The Mind Is Willing, So the Body Doesn’t Have Much Choice" NYT - subscription required

My brother is quoted.

"Bob Carolan, 82, a retired pulmonologist from Eugene, Ore., recalled an incident about 15 years ago in which he resuscitated a player on the ice who was having a heart attack. “The best play I ever made at Snoopy,” said Carolan, who ran into the same man at a tournament 10 years later. “He had an implantable defibrillator, but he was still playing.” "
Lots of great quotes...

"“We all have to get up at 5:30 to pee anyway, so we might as well play some hockey,” said Craig Kocian, 78, of Arvada, Colo., as they dressed for the game."
"After their early morning game, the Fading Stars came off the ice and stripped away their gear. Out came a case of Coors Light. It was 7:40 a.m. Noticing the beer company’s logo on the team’s sweaters, a visitor asked if it was a sponsor.
“The only sponsorship we’re looking for is Viagra,” said Murray Platt, 68, of Denver."

Any goalies out there try the Kenesky custom gear? They have awesome retro and vintage gear & I’m looking to replace my Boddam waffle style blocker (and maybe eventually get a trapper & pads). Prices are in CAD too!

I'm not familiar with them, but most of my gear is customized and also on the higher end(Passau and Bauer). Obviously financial situation matters, but if all your other gear is up to snuff and you want to rock that aesthetic I'm all for going high end. For me my blocker and glove were my last upgrades, it was nice having a high end blocker, but I just couldn't quit my old ass glove. It depends on the level of play, but if you're happy with your glove now I wouldn't mess with a new one

Looking for some advice.

My league has recently been having pretty signficant issues with teams not having enough skaters on game nights and having to forfeit.

We've won via forfeit 3 times in our last 8 games. Our summer season is 12 games total. Guys are paying $300~ each to play for the summer.

Right now if a team forfeits, they get a L for the game, but..that's it. The non forfeiting team can still have the ice time, but the refs and score keeper are cancelled.

I want to propose some kind of deterrent/punishment for teams who forfeit. The L doesn't matter because in our leauge...every team makes the playoffs.

I want to suggest something like - when a team forfeits, the forfeiting team Captain is suspended for the next game - or something like that to incentivize team Captains to actually do their job and make sure they have a roster with enough skaters that forfeiting is an actual emergency, not just an option. My team rarely has less than 10 skaters on any given game because I actively recruit reliable fulltime skaters, and subs who want the opoortunity to play.

Anyone dealt with some thing like this, have some suggestions I can bring up at the next Captains meeting?

This is wild to me. My comp teams would be annoyed when we had to have 11 players on a team, because they'd all show up every game and be mad they had to rotate an extra through. Also, it's not like signing up is cheap, there is significant investment in equipment and money. Plus we're all nuts and usually want to play as much as possible. I almost never said no to a second(or third) game when one of the goalies from the game after me didn't show and I was asked to play.

Is this one of the leagues that has a wait list or fills up quick? If there is a surplus of people wanting to join the league, maybe propose 3 or 4 unexcused absences makes a player ineligible for the next season/year? I think it would be better to make a rule going after the offenders, not holding a Captain liable for something they really can't completely control.

Does your league have a "roster lock" or something like that? Mine does but relatively late in the season (to protect against ringers in the playoffs). As such, when the rosters are not locked, we usually just post on the league facebook page that we are looking for players to skate and rarely have forfeits this way. And same with your league, L's don't really matter....mainly this is to avoid the same scenario you mention (Pay big bucks and then not actually play).

Not really? We’re capped at 22 players, but it can be any combination of Subs/full timers. That’s up for the Captain to manage/decide.

And our overall league is relatively healthy. No A league right now, but 8 teams in B, 4 teams in UC, 9 teams in LC, and then another 8 or 9 teams in D.

There’s also a free agent list with 10 or so players on it looking to join a team.

This issue is at least 80% Captains not putting in the effort to fill their roster, and checking with their existing players about how consistent they’ll be throughout the season.

Our league has to pay for the ice, so the team that cancels late (as in, we can't notify in time to not get charged for the ice, which is 48 hours), essentially covers the whole cost and the team that was cancelled upon gets a credit for next season, so it will reduce their league fees a bit.

I think your solution sounds good.

It certainly cuts to the core of your likely issue. I also think teams should forfeit, but there should be an active sub list of people quickly available so you can at least scrimmage.

My league suffers from a similar problem with two teams who regularly try to play games with as few as five skaters. It takes the fun out of things, that's for sure.

The problem in my league is likely that the fees are too low and so people don't really feel like they need to get their money's worth. My team has to carry 17 skaters and we rarely play with 13 (the ideal number to my mind). We regularly struggle with 11 or 12 and then every once in a while we have 17 which absolutely sucks, but because maybe 8 players are roughly at 50% attendance, we're stuck. And 10:30 start times often leaves us with 7.

We have a guy who simply skips games because he'll be out to dinner and can't make it, another guy who would rather ref, another guy who skips every game where the snowmobiling conditions are good and another guy who tries to get away every weekend he can, so he's in Vegas or Daytona beach or whatever. It goes on and on.

I’m very lucky that I’m on a team with a real good group of guys that don’t bail last minute. Last night turned into a shit show though. We have 10 regulars that show up 95% of the time, and we have a sub list of 4 or 5 where we can usually get a couple guys to show when needed.

Anyway, one of guys got his flight back from canceled yesterday from a work trip, and another guy got hurt in his other league Sunday night, and no one could sub (10pm game, but usually doesn’t matter), so we end up skating with 8. Early 2nd period, one of our guys barely clips a guy on the other team with a high stick, and they give him 5 and throw him out. They said the guy he hit was bleeding (I couldn’t see any blood) and a new USA hockey rule eliminated the double minor, it’s gotta be 2 or 5 and ejected. So we ended up playing with 7 for almost two periods. We ended up pulling out a 5-4 win, but I’m fucking hurting this morning. That’s bull shit rule if that’s legit. You gotta give some discretion to the officials on the ice there to properly call that.

I just picked up a cheap-o fitness tracker that, shockingly, does not have "beer league ice hockey" as one of its pre-set exercise modes.

Here on day 1 I am pretty impressed by its apparent accuracy with what it does track, so I wonder what would be my best approximation when I pick a mode?

Biking or roller skating, from my pre-sets, seem to be the two obvious choices. My other options are things like hiking and running. I'm inclined to go with roller skating and call it a day?

I go with "cross country" when I play disc golf cause that's most similar. I could see roller skating being a good analogue.

Yeah, I don't know what level the tech is on yours, but biking should be trying to take into account elevation, where I'd imagine roller skating would be more precise

How do you all feel about neck guards for beer league? I have never tried one, so I don't know how restrictive to movement it would be. Given that some pro leagues are now mandating it, I wonder if USA hockey will also force this on the beer leagues.
