How do you all feel about neck guards for beer league? I have never tried one, so I don't know how restrictive to movement it would be. Given that some pro leagues are now mandating it, I wonder if USA hockey will also force this on the beer leagues.
As a goalie I have always worn both the plastic guard that everyone wears but also one around my neck. Even with mine being more aggressive than what a normal skater would wear, I don't notice it at all. Hell even the shirt I wear under my pads has a little neck padding. If I ever started skating out again I would buy one. I could definitely see USA hockey adopting it, you get covered on the ice for a low price, doesn't seem like a big ask

I probably should wear one but I don't even wear shoulders so probably not going to add a neck guard anytime soon.
I have always wanted to try without shoulder pads but then just the other night while i was clearing out the puck a guy quite literally skated right into me. I think he was a former roller player and just didnt really know how to stop. Without those pads I suspect that would have really hurt!

I'm eventually going to get a puck to the ribs in front of the net that will be painful but that's a future me problem.
I wear them more for the breast plate than the actual should pads. Took a puck off the sternum once which was scary enough with shoulder pads that I won’t play without them.

IRT neck guards my son is 22, but never game up his neck guard. Still wears it in pickup games. He will certainly never give it up now.

I wore it the last few times out but messed my back up doing something else, so I've been on the shelf. Skating again next Thursday for the first time in a while. I'm not at all worried about it impacting my performance. I have the skate armor one. Not restrictive at all. Feels like a turtleneck at worse, at best I don't notice it.

Anyone skate enough to want a sparx?
Our org is raffling one and there are very few (single digit) tickets sold. So, as of now, you have a great chance to win!

Wow.

Season over again.

A beer league team that stays together year to year is a strange thing to be a part of. I mean, these guys.

My team is just such a flawed mess -- mostly too good to ever get a good draft pick, but saddled with some guys who suck and who also don't show up to very many regular season games, but this year got all, "yeah! Let's go!" in the playoffs (leaving our better players on the bench for 3/4 of the game when it actually mattered).

And it is probably going to be the same next year.

I have one captain who makes it very clear at the start of the season that the playoffs are not included in the team fee and as such for the playoffs he sets the roster however he wants. It causes a bit of a ruckus as people (sometimes rightfully so) get butthurt over not playing in the playoffs.

As as for how well that works: Like clockwork we lose to a team that has 3 or so ringers :)

Update - this pic is nearly nine years old. I checked in with my bros on their birthdays last month.

The Snoopy World Senior Hockey Tournament is underway in Santa Rosa, and Bob, now 83 on the right is captaining the "Oregon Old Growths" their first game is 5:30 pacific time today.

James on the left, now 84, has the luxury of Canadian university year round ice access. "I'm trying to skate every day, free skate when I'm not playing hockey. I'm fucked if I missed a day." I'm sure some time out of the house each day is a motivator.

money quote - "We call it hockey, but if you saw it you wouldn't."

You should ask if their rinks have Livebarn. You could actually watch them play if it's there (and you were interested to watch).

Is anyone here in Central Maine (Lewiston/Auburn or Augusta area) and know what the scene for leagues for a 58 year old looks like?

I’ve been on lengthy relocation adventure, and haven’t played for over a year, and it’s time to get back at it…

Years ago I very briefly thought I was moving to Lewiston. In the week or so where it looked like that was where we were headed I found the beer league situation there either pretty thin or hard to figure out. Looks about the same now, quickly retracing my steps. Maybe you already saw this, but I did find this league just browsing around.

Maine has always struck me as in need of more rinks.

For anyone within driving distance to Saugus Mass., if you are a street/roller hockey goalie and would like to play on Tuesday nights in an indoor rink year round, please PM me.

The Eastern Massachusetts Roller Hockey League has been playing every week on Tuesday nights & Saturday mornings since 1999. I started playing when I got back into hockey in 2011 after a 15 year hiatus, and I couldn’t be happier that I did. It’s a very well run draft league with a great group of guys. We have two refs for every game, keep stats, and you get 14 games plus 1 guaranteed playoff game for about half the cost of ice hockey.

Our biggest issue now is because of guys aging out, moving, etc, we are in desperate need of a couple of goalies.

Goalies can play on feet or in-line skates. If you play roller/street/deck hockey goal, and want to join a league with a great bunch of guys, please PM me, or contact Dave through the league website.

I so wish I lived close enough to give this a go. Sounds like a ton of fun.

In other news, I saw something at a D3 college game that I've never seen before -- using a fire extinguisher to repair an especially gnarly crack/groove/cut in the ice mid period.

It was sort of a weird little show the Zamboni guy put on with his shovel, snow pile, water bottle and fire extinguisher. Seemed to work well enough to refreeze the spot quickly.
