Is it too early to start talking about the "Transition Plan" from BB to a mortal Head Coach?

Is it impossible to talk about the next coach cause we are too far (3 years? 5?) from BB leaving?

McD seems like he will be long gone (teams had interest this year...hard to believe another year in this offense wont yield more interest next year.)

Even if we where talking say 2015 and McD did decide to take over after another year of apprenticeship....would we want him?

Patricia?  Or will he be gone in 2015 or 16?

You have to think that the Patriots, even post Brady will be a plum NFL job.  Or will there be hesitance to try to follow in a giants footsteps?

What traits do we want?

What College coaches make you think "in 2018....THATS the guy".

Do we need to hope Jimmy "the Franchise Coach Follower" Johnson comes out of retirement?

Five years from now, Chip Kelly comes over from Philadelphia to take the reins.  They've groomed a guy they drafted in the second or third round of the 2015 draft to play QB.  The young WRs are all grown up and Boyce, Thompkins, and Dobson are really good, mature NFL receivers.  Gronk is still playing at a high level.  The young studs on defense give the Pats a top 5 defense.  They continue to find RBs and OL.  And though the drop off from Brady to this next QB is immense, as a team they're good enough to continue to post winning season after winning season, regularly competing for the AFCE title and every few years playing in the AFCCG.  They're still a really good franchise (because it starts with smart and stable ownership), but not quite like we've seen the past 13 seasons.

My suspicion is that BB stays for at least several more years so I'm not sure we need to really worry about this yet.

I am a huge BB fan but in general I think Patriots fans worry too much about this transition.  BB is fantastic but he's not irreplaceable.   I have a lot of faith in the Krafts to go through a thorough and intelligent search process to replace BB, hopefully by hiring both a new coach and a new GM.  And I think the Patriots job will be seen as one of the most desirable positions in the league for prospective candidates - premier ownership group, solid finances, great fanbase, desirable location to live, etc.

I can't tell if the Jimmy Johnson thing is a joke or not but he's 70 (about 9 years older than Belichick) so that's not happening.

Personally I think he's going to keep coaching for a while longer (3-5 years) so it is kind of difficult to speculate about successors.  I do think you can assume that Kraft and BB have had conversations about succession and that Kraft has some clue as to how much longer BB wants to coach and they have some idea of a succession plan, but beyond that who knows.  Five years is a lifetime in coaching.  The hot guy today might be dogshit by then, and the next HC of the NEP might not be on anyone's radar screen right now.

Parcells coached until he was 65.  Belichick will be 62 in April.  I give him 2-3 more years, then he becomes team president, Caserio becomes GM and McDaniels becomes HC of the NEP.  My guess is that the succession plan is well understood by ownership and the people involved.

Brady has four more seasons on his contract, until he is 40.  My guess is that he will finish his career (with the NEP) with someone other than Belichick as his coach.

My gut says that Belichick leaves his office in Patriots HQ feet first. I don't think he wants to do anything else; certainly not TV or to occupy an Empty Title of President. Maybe he becomes part owner of Jon Bon Jovi's NFL expansion team ten years from now and just hangs out with JBJ all day long, teaching him the business.

I also think Belichick stays for several seasons after Brady retires, just to prove it was the coach and not just the QB. That is a minimum of 4 more seasons, if Brady holds true to his pledge of playing till he's 40.

IOW, no, I don't think this is something we need to worry or talk about.

BB stays for two more decades until he drops dead because he loves coaching that much and has no idea what else he would do with his life.

Realistically, I have heard a few rumors that BB is going to leave in a couple years to go coach Navy, but IDK how much truth there is in that. I am not so sure about McDaniels as the head coach. I think is a decent OC, but his job in Denver was a mess and he had a good franchise beneath him there. The Pats are clearly a promote from within team, so I think it is most likely Patricia's job to lose, especially if the defense turns into a top 5 unit.

Um, what? Source for these Navy rumors?

Did you know that both Super Bowl coaches this season are basically Belichick's age?

Belichick (61)
Carroll (62)
Fox (58)

Belichick isn't going anywhere for a few years.

Who knows what will happen when he leaves. It's an interesting topic, but one I'm happy to put off for a bit.

The nice thing is that, so far at least, the Krafts have a pretty great track record with head coach hirings, even if Carroll didn't work out here.

He's not going to leave; he's going to find a new host body.
That's funny.

I see Belichick leaving the Pats completely when he hangs up the whistle. He doesn't want to repeat what Parcells tried to do to him with the NYJ.

I predict he will establish an over 60 lacrosse league and install himself as commissioner, team president, head coach, and team captain and travel around looking for other geezers to play against.
