Lots of talk in various threads about the German juggernaut but no specific thread. Plus, we have an actual Bayern fan hanging around and if Ossie ever returns, the potential for some expletive-filled rants. So...on with the show.

Pep played Phillip Lahm as a midfielder against Barcelona in a friendly...and deployed zero strikers in the starting lineup. Lahm then scored a goal...on a header. All 5'6" of him.

Bayern went on to win the match 2-0 with striker Mario Mandzukic adding the other goal in the 87th minute, presumably after sneaking into the match when Guardiola's back was turned.

I don´t like the hype Pep gets. So far, he has achieved nothing at Bayern. The friendlies don´t count and Barca was more Barca B...Names i never heard of played there.

He (Pep) could play everyone anywhere so far. It´s 22 superstars who were brought to Bayern mostly because they can play multiple positions. Maybe not van Buyten who is kind of limited, but i don´t see many guys who can´t play multiple positions. For now, he is credited for nothing (in Germany), everyone (in Germany!) talks like he is the messias when Bayern already won the treble last year with superb football under coach Heynckes and everyone was happy from the outside. Of course, a Robben, a Gomez, they were mad, but had to bite their tongues, because Bayern won everything and then their time (Robben) came, they hit the spot.

And in comes Pep and he is talked about like he is the superbrain with new tactical dimensions nobody even thought about...A 4-1-4-1..OMG! For me, that´s just a 4-5-1 and that´s it, but what do i know.

What Pep is doing, is just working because he has those superb players. Müller, Ribery, Kroos, Schweinsteiger, Götze, Javi Martinez, maybe Thiago, that´s exceptional. And the talent Bayern has had last year, was already better than ever before. This season, you can make a case that their roster is even better. I still think the depth up front is not that good, but we saw last year Bayern scored almost 100 (98,i think) in 34 league matches with nobody scoring 20 goals..(checked it: Mandzukic: 24games, 15 goals, then Müller 28gm/13go, Gomez, 21gm/11go).

Tomorrow is the 1st real test. Saturday, supercup, @Dortmund. 80.000 fans coming. Neuer and Ribery won´t play, but it´s a title and i think they won´t take anything lightly.

Uh...you are going to hate the Pep Era.

And dude has a resume. The "done nothing in Germany" line does not fly. It's true and meaningless at the same time.

ETA: Mike Goodman at Grantland with a "Pep @ Bayern" preview that is definitely worth reading.

Well if he earns the respect, alright. But he did nothing for Bayern, so far.
Dortmund is probably happy about all the media attention shifting (and pumping up the expectations) even more to Bayern. And actually, this is each year the same. You still have to go out and play. They will probably win the Bundesliga, maybe even score 100+ goals and be 10-15 points ahead of Dortmund. But being Bundesliga champions won´t cut it at Bayern. Not with this team. Not after getting better players and winning the treble last year. They have to play a nice football, make everyone happy (or at least stay calm and out of media trouble), win the DFB-Cup and I would say going to CL semis at least. That´s not an easy task...

Everything happening now at Bayern is really a drastic change. Actually i thought Pep would be more conservative, as he said he won´t change much and he has to fit his system to the players not vice-versa, etc. When you see Lahm running around in midfield, there is something changing...
It´s like everyone is watching for him/Bayern to fail. Just what happened to Klinsi, when he became Bayerns coach. Just that Peps roster is about twice as good than what Klinsi had (i don´t wanna compare Klinsi and Pep here, just the situation at Bayern and the pressure Pep faces...).

Let´s wait and see how Bayern starts...Then let´s see where they may end, in terms of points, and if Dortmund can stay close to them. Their 1st eight games are no cakewalk, with away matches at Frankfurt, Freiburg, Schalke and Leverkusen (they finished last season 6-5-4-3). If they march through those like Bayern started last year (start record with 8 wins), they might be as good as last years version...I just want to wait with my praise... :)

Dortmund - Bayern 4-2 (1-0 half)
Goals:
1-0 Reus, after Starke makesan easy save, he lets the ball go away from him and Reus heads it in.
1-1 Robben, Lahm with a perfect cross, Robben just runs into the ball, header, 1-1.
2-1 v.Buyten (og), cross Gündogan, diving header van Buyten, hair was wishiwashi, ball was in the net, Starke had no chance.
3-1 Gündogan, danced around Müller, semichipped (or curled) it with right foot into the far corner. Nice goal.
3-2 Robben, cross, somehow controls it in front of the goal about 8m away, with back to the goal, spins around and everyone expects a shot into the far (keepers perspective:right) corner, he shoots, probably wanted to shoot into the other (keepers perspective: left) corner, shoots through traffic into the middle, no chance for Weidenfeller.
4-2 Reus, pass Aubameyang, shot Reus, no chance for Starke.

Teams should have been tired at this point of the season and considering today was the hottest day of the year in germany (38°C, ref stopped the game in each half so the teams could take a break for a minute and drink something, never seen before), but the 1st half was a great game. Bayern was dominating from the start, then Dortmund also got their share of possession and chances. I did only see 15minutes of 2nd half, until the goal-scoring frenzy started (3goals within 5minutes). At the end, there was another chance für Müller (crossbar), so this was probably more offense than we will see in the season.

Some nice passing from Thiago and Kroos, i must admit. But there was some real defensive problems. No Javi Martinez, no Schweinsteiger, no Dante, no Luiz Gustavo...I don´t know, but this brings many problems in defense. Thiago doesn´t seem like someone who can hold the fort alone. Especially with two CBs like van Buyten and Boateng, two guys who produce a few mistakes.

This win just brought Dortmund 1,25mil € (loser Bayern: 0,75mil €). Nice way to start the season.

Schweinsteiger and Martinez are both back starting in the Audi Cup today, so of course Martinez is at CB and Lahm is at DM.

Bayern - Gladbach 3:1
Neuer - Lahm, Boateng, Dante, Alaba - Schweinsteiger, Kroos - Robben, Müller, Ribery - Mandzukic.
1:0 Robben, beautiful pass from Ribery above/through the defense, Robben takes it, but instead of stopping it, he takes the bouncing ball with the 1st touch and hits it right into the goal.
2:0 Mandzukic. Set piece from Robben from the right side, Mandzukic is 5m passive offside, Ribery touches the ball, new situation arises and Mandzukic is onside again. Ter Stegen saves the ball, Mandzukic stands where a No.9 has to be, goal from 5m.
2:1 Dante (og.). Cross from the left side from Arango, next Gladbach striker is a few feet away. Neuer must make the call, jumps out, Dante waits, waits, waits, then hits it with his right (weak) foot, while Neuer (behind him) dives for the cross, which he would have saved with his (non-existant) hat.
3:1 Alaba (pen.). Ter Stegen saves Müllers penalty, which wasn´t that bad. It was shot high, so the save looked good. Ball bounces parallel to the goalline to the corner. Robben and Dominguez (who just caused the 1st penalty with a handball!) go to the ball. Robben wants to put the ball into his way, pushes the ball with his chest and Domingues again (!!!) uses his hand. Ball goes out of bounds, ref asks his assistant if that guy just really did that again, penalty again for handball, yellow card and penalty for Bayern. Now Alaba shoots instead of Müller and easily rolls it into the other corner than ter Stegen is jumping, while Dominguez is seen smiling.

From a tactical standpoint, there was not much of a change to last year. Quite some troubles in defense, as both Dante and Boateng weren´t without mistakes. When Gladbach had the ball, Kroos and Schweinsteiger played defensive midfielders, period. Müller, Robben, Ribery as a more offensive midfield, Mandzukic the No.9. Kroos marching up front a lot and shooting from 15-25m, we´ve seen that a lot last season. Let´s wait and see what happens when Javi Martinez comes back and Thiago is in shape. Still no game-time for Luis Gustavo (i wonder, when he really goes to Wolfsburg) and Shaqiri.

Bayern clinched the Bundesliga title today with a 3-1 win over Hertha BSC. There are 7 matches remaining and they're 25 points clear, with a +66 goal differential. Damn.

I just looked at the table.  P 27, W25, D2, L0.  They've only dropped four points all season.  That's incredible.  They've lost two matches the whole season -- the German Super Cup to Dortmund in July, and the Champions League match home to City after they'd already clinched a spot in the next round.

Ribbery's goal was a thing of beauty.  Full gallop about 12 feet from the end line just outside the six-yard box with the keeper getting into position and he does about the only thing that would work -- a perfect chip with spin falls gently over the line.  I couldn't find a way to embed it, but it starts around 1:10 or so of the first video ("English Commentary") here:  http://www.soccer-blogger.com/2014/03/25/hertha-berlin-vs-bayern-munich-2014-highlights-1-3-ramos-kroos-gotze-ribery-goals-video/
