I didn't remember how painful the early innings of game 2 alcs were. Tigers up 5-0 in the sixth against Buchholz, and had already won Game One. Sox being no-hit by Scherzer.Things should change soon.
Workman in, finally, walks a guy. This would be painful to watch for the first time. I must have blanked it out.

4-0 lead after 4 with Pedro on the mound. How did we lose this one? I hope next year ends better.

Aaron Fucking Boone. Just finished the 2003 ALCS on MLB TV. STILL hurts.
MLBN played it over and over. It's on right now. Then later in the day, they feature 1986 in program after program. Theory: they are trying to cheer up New Yorkers, who could really use cheering up right now.

Clemens 1986 20K game Vs Seattle at Fenway is on ESPN at noon Eastern today.
I wonder which broadcast they'll use, assuming there's even a Seattle tape to use. I don't think ESPN even showed MLB games at that point so I doubt they have their own recording. I've seen the NESN one with Martin and Monty on the call so many times, it would be interesting to watch and hear different announcers call the game.

Wouldn't be able to recognize "current" Schiraldi without Costas saying who it is.

I'm watching game 5 of the same series tonight via the Pedro server on p&g. Where are you finding old playoff games on mlb.tv? I'm hoping to watch the 2004 playoffs after, starting with the ALDS but I'm struggling to find it online.

I guess I didn’t realize that pitchers didn’t have to come set before delivering the pitch back in ‘86. Was a bit confusing to watch Roger continually balking from the stretch.

And that was the era in which Rickey Henderson stole like eight billion bases. Remarkable.

Forgot that Clemens got helped out by Baylor not being able to catch. Maybe he needed to get the 20ks and the occasional fly ball, since he was afraid of Baylor catching ground ball outs.

Baylor liked to say he dropped that ball on purpose so Clemens could get the K instead.

Clemens striking out 20 is more amazing than the other 3 since he did not get to pitch to the opposing pitcher.

One minor criticism I have with NESN replays of the 2013 playoffs is that NESN uses the national feed either TBS or Fox. Is there any reason why they couldn't use the Red Sox radio feed? I saw when they replay old games on MLB that the local feed is used if possible. Just a minor quibble but still a quibble.

TCM tomorrow (Tuesday) will be showing some baseball related movies. Jimmy Stewart plays a pitcher with an artificial leg in one. Reagan as Grover Cleveland Alexander in another.

Johnson's 20 K game is one of my favorite re-watchable sports moments on YouTube. The Reds' swings are laughably bad; they couldn't hit Johnson's best pitches if he was throwing a beach ball (yeah they scored one run off of him, but whatever). Look at some of these cuts:

TCM tomorrow (Tuesday) will be showing some baseball related movies. Jimmy Stewart plays a pitcher with an artificial leg in one. Reagan as Grover Cleveland Alexander in another.
In his Athletic series on his top 100 baseball players, Joe Posnanski writes about that Reagan- as-Alexander movie, "The Winning Team."
https://theathletic.com/1638552/2020/03/01/the-baseball-100-no-26-grover-cleveland-alexander/
“The Winning Team” is a spectacularly bad movie. No, seriously, as bad as you think it might be, it is so much worse than that. Even if you are a devotee of bad old movies — and I like to think of myself as one of those — “The Winning Team” will break your spirit.

It shouldn’t be this bad. The movie stars Ronald Reagan as pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander. This is such a wonderful confluence of American history; it makes Alexander the only player in sports history to be named for one president and to have another president play him in a movie.

“The Winning Team” also features Doris Day, who would become Hollywood’s biggest female star. There are also a few ballplayers in there, including Hall of Famer Bob Lemon.

Put all of that together and it’s hard to believe that “The Winning Team” doesn’t at least make for some fun kitsch watching.

But let me be clear again: It does not. Watch “The Winning Team” for even 10 minutes, and you realize it’s not just a bad movie. It’s a Dementor from Harry Potter. “They drain peace, hope and happiness out of the air around them,” J.K Rowling wrote of them — the Dementors, I mean — and while I’m not sure that watching “The Winning Team” is what inspired her to develop the characters, I’m also not sure it wasn’t.

The biggest trouble with the movie — other than the writing, acting, direction and such — is that it begins with these words: “This is The True Story of GROVER CLEVELAND ALEXANDER.”

Spoiler alert: It is not.
Reading that actually makes me want to record this movie and try watching it just to see if it's actually as bad as he says.

I fell asleep to this last night. It was 4/20/07 and they were wearing green to honor Red Auerbach. Passed out right before the Sox made their comeback. These semi-random replays are pleasant enough. You remember that Damon was a Yankee, of course, but forget that Doug Mientkiewicz was too.
I Was in Pompano Beach Fla. on vacation watching that game at an outdoor bar. Mostly Yankee fans around me. Great comeback. And it wasn't Papelbon who closed the game but Okajima who closed it out. Good move by Tito. That was kind of the beginning of the run of 07 and if they weren't in first place then, they were within a few days and never lost it. I didn't rub it in bad to them i just said......."I think we're better then you this year" One guy said.."We'll see".

OK, so I'm combing through YouTube for classic games and decide to settle in for the 1986 ALCS pennant clinching game 7. I've re-watched Game 5 of this series a few times, but never this one. At the time this game aired I was a lonely 15-year-old, a rare Red Sox fan growing up half a world away in Iowa. A curious kid to be sure, but ignorant and naive about the world at large. Anyway, just as I pop open my first beer and prepare to wax nostalgic about one of my first tastes of Red Sox glory, the national anthem gets underway and I see this:

What in the mother of god....?

Can we all agree Kimbrel was the least fun?
I think Papelbon's ERA in 2006 was like 0.91. I know he didn't start closing full time till mid May or early June but still. Wow! Correction: He had 35 saves vs. 37 in 07 and just as many appearances as 07. And had more innings pitched 68.1 vs. 58.1 in 07 and only 9 less K's 75 in 06 vs. 84 in 07. Pretty good......pretty, pretty good.

I had heard she was a singer also but obviously nothing great. I moved out of the Boston area in August of 1971 so I hadn't heard of her until 1995 when she was working for the Stankees. I think she's from Newton so was she known in Boston media in sports or music, lol??? Just curious. Did she ever work for a Boston team or paper?

Papelbon was the closer pretty much from the start in 2006. Foulke looked shaky closing out a five run lead (that became four run lead) on Opening Day. Papelbon got the first actual save opportunity (third game of the season) and never looked back. He was 10/10 in save opportunities in April (13 total appearances).

And IIRC he pitched out of same crazy jams early on that year

Yes I did look it up and correct myself on the post. He was the closer basically all year. For some reason I thought they were using Craig Hansen in the beginning but he was up and down from the minors. That 06 team was a different and fun Red Sox team till the collapse in late August and Lester out with cancer. I think they didn't commit an error until June???? That's crazy! And that infield of Alex Gonzales and Mark Loretta were fantastic defensively. Better then Lugo and Pedey(Not that I regret getting rid of Loretta to start Pedey lol.) Just saying defensively. And Lowell and Youk. They would win games with Crisp, Loretta and A-Gon bunting, stealing and sac flies. A lot of people were saying..."These are the Red Sox?" Hindsight is 20/20 but 2 people they should have kept at short were Cabrera and they let him go for Rent a -Wreck. Then after Edgar they sign Alex Gonzales. They should have kept A-Gon. I'd take him over Lugo any day. I never understood why they didn't keep him instead of Lugo.

Thanks for this! My YTTV DVR is set to record all MLB games, but this is titled "All-Time Games," and has to be recorded separately.
23-22. Schmidt had at least 2 home runs maybe 3. I was beginning summer session at Temple U and was off that day and listened on radio toward the end. LIved in Philly area since 71 but still a Boston sports fan to the end. Radio is so much more intense.

Right now, MLB showing Cubs-Phils from May 17, 1979. Looks like this will be a very high scoring affair.

edit- fixed date
23-22 Phillies. I had just started summer session at Temple u when that game was on. I think Schmidt had at least 2 home runs maybe 3. I've been in Philly since 71 but still am a die hard Boston Sports fan. I was listening on radio in my car to the end of the game. Baseball on radio is so much better described and more intense.

She was a legit Broadway singing actress and came from Newton. She recorded a song written by Ken Coleman (who fancied himself quite the poet) for benefit the Jimmy Fund sung to the tune of Take Me Out To The Ballgame called Take Me Out To Old Fenway. I've seen longtime Red Sox fans break down in tears listening to it.

Somewhere around here I have a scratchy copy of it but can't find it here or anywhere on the interwebs. Maybe someone with better Google-fu than me can locate it an link it.

It mentions Yaz and Ted and Doerr and others. Here is a line from it I located:

“And if I can’t actually be there, then give me the action by Curt, Ned, and Ken.”
IIRC, that verse is sung in the same tune as And I don't care if I never get back... With a few more syllables obviously.
