Baseball and the Protests (including Pedro content!)

Thought it would be good to have a thread dedicated solely to how baseball is or isn’t responding to the protests and this moment in history.

Will kick off with: did anyone see Pedro say this?

I did not see Pedro say that, but I am now glad that you pulled it.

There was a decent article up on ESPN about things MLB can do right now to help:

Summary:

1. Update the "Selig Rule" (analogous to Rooney Rule) about interviewing minority candidates
2. Use Analytics to promote diversity through monitoring behavior [this one feels a little silly]
3. Use the longstanding relationship between baseball / LL and police / unions to foster conversation between the sides
4. Use MLB's diversity to highlight cultural differences [this one feels a little trite]
5. Don't let the topic fall out of the media cycle, keep it in the forefront by doing things like highlighting Jackie Robinson's life and advocacy

It feels to me like there's probably some depth to #3, but I'm not sure exactly how they'd make that work.

I like Pedro's remarks in the OP. I was less impressed with him last night on mlbn. He was rambling, seemed to be implying that Dominic Smith might have been abused or suffered some trauma as a child that made him so sensitive. Basically, he was rambling. That statement seems to be a good recovery.

I saw this too and agree that it was odd, I think that he was using 'abused' and 'trauma' in a different way from how you or I might use it.

To #5, I thought it was a mistake for MLB to only do their BLM stuff on opening weekend. Sure some teams might have a banner or sign still up at their park, but stuff like the patches on the uniforms and BLM branded on the back of pitching mounds (so it's seen on every pitch) didn't have to go away.
