Sabres may retain salary for an Eichel trade.

The New York Rangers are absolutely interested in Eichel, confirmed multiple sources, none of whom believe (as of Saturday night) a trade is imminent. The Anaheim Ducks, Vegas Golden Knights, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and Columbus Blue Jackets are also interested. Will the Minnesota Wild circle back? Will other teams reengage, especially if the Sabres are willing to retain some salary? It sounds like it.

Helix Sleep has to be pissed by having this in-line ad getting in here... wow... tone deaf to transition into it like that... I've just been listening via headphones and not watching... so it was beyond jarring to have this just transition to one of the hosts doing an ad... and I didn't have the cue of seeing the view switch from the 4 people box to just the host in a pre-recorded ad...

Interesting article here on Mikael Hakkarainen, the guy who got traded for Marc-Andre Fleury, but is still "playing" in the Chicago organization.

“He will remain in Chicago’s organization,” Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon said on the day of the trade. “This is more of a situation where NHL teams have a certain number of contracts that they’re allowed, and this keeps that equal in this transaction. He’s going to remain with the Chicago organization and likely play in the American League with Rockford. It will be our contract but he’ll remain a part of their organization.”
It's a really weird situation. The article mentions that Vegas has done this before, but doesn't really mention any further details.

From a "treating people like people" perspective, this feel like a pretty rough stretch for the Knights, with Fleury finding out via Twitter that he got traded, and then them telling this kid that they basically don't want him in their organization, even though they just moved a future (albeit past his prime) Hall of Famer for him.

I like the podcast in general, but Adam's ad reads are just awful and mostly about my dick and balls. I listen through my Athletic subscription to skip them.

Winnipeg will require proof of vaccination to enter the building

True North Sports and Entertainment, the company that owns the Jets, says concerts and sporting events at its two venues in Winnipeg — the Canada Life Centre and Burton Cummings Theatre — will go ahead this fall, but only those fully vaccinated will be allowed to attend.
The company says all employees, event staff, and guests will have to provide proof they've had two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine in order to work at or attend events.

I'm late but that Nurse contract is an abomination. I don't understand how guys like Seth Jones and Darnell Nurse are getting that much money when they are legit not good players. Jones at least has a history of being better and you can hope that the last 2 years were just an anomaly, but Nurse has never been a particularly good player. Last year was a very good season by his standards and he scored on 10% of his shots and McDavid or Draisaitl factored in on over 70% of his points. Defensively he's quite bad actually. Gives up a ton of chances and goals against. Takes a lot of bad penalties. Is a legitimate liability on the PK. One of the worst PK players in the NHL. To put it into perspective.

Nurse on the PK

137 TOI - CF% 12.46 - SCF% - 11.59 % - xG% 9.88 - actua goals ga/gf 2/17

JARED FUCKING TINORDI on the PK
43 TOI - CF% 14.86% - SCF % 7.50 - xG% 8.27 - actual ga/gf - 2/5

He's as bad as Jared Tinordi on the Pk and Tinordi is the worst player I've seen on an NHL rink in a long time.

I just don't get what NHL GMs are doing and it's annoying because Charlie, an actually amazing player, probably deserves a max contract if this is the market and that sucks.

City of Glendale, AZ @GlendaleAZ
With an increased focus on larger, more impactful events and uses of the city-owned arena, the city of Glendale has chosen to not renew the operating agreement for the Arizona Coyotes beyond the coming 2021-22 season.

So where will the Coyotes be after this season? Quebec? Toronto? Houston?

I would love Quebec City but I bet the NHL is dying for it to be Houston because of the market size.

Houston would suck (to quote, or at least paraphrase, Don Cherry, "they should never put a team anyplace where they call hockey 'ice hockey'")

Quebec would be great, I loved the Nords.

Hamilton...well, I'm moving to Hamilton in the fall, so that would be fine by me, I guess, though it's awkward being a Bs fan in 'enemy territory,' and I've been looking forward to catching some Bulldogs games. OTOH, it would revive the old saw, "if Hamilton gets an NHL team, Toronto will want one too"

Isn’t there buzz about Tempe? My guess is they find a way to stay in Arizona - even if it means a makeshift short-term solution while a new arena gets built.

Canes give Svechnikov 8 yr extension 7.75m AAV .

Dom likes the signing, quips “that svechnikov extension is going to be the new gold standard for “what do you mean he’s signed for X more years at that cap hit?!” otherwise known as the david pastrnak.”

I love the pettiness of this offer sheet but I have a hard time with it for one reason. It perpetuates the idea that an offer sheet is something that needs to be avenged. As a fan of a team with an elite 23 year old number 1 d coming up on RFA, that's good news, but I think the league would be better if there were more offer sheets.

If I was Montreal, I'd take the first and third and rebuild.
If I was Montreal, I would take the savings and the picks and then send my 2022 first and Carolina's 2022 first, Ryan Poehling, Nick Suzuki, and Jonathan Drouin (NTC) to Buffalo for Eichel.

Just kidding. I am a miserable, depressed Sabres fan clinging to hope.

The resident Habs fan at work says never to that deal. He thinks they need to build around Suzuki and Caufield, and that Suzuki’s already better than Eichel.

If I were Bergevin I’d take the picks and the cap savings. A 1st and a 3rd are not fair return on a guy with his draft pedigree. On the other hand, they ARE a fair return on what he actually is. Locking in Kotkaniemi at a 6.1m value going forward is not good business.

Montreal should let him go and take the picks. I think if they were offered a 1st and 3rd in a trade without the offer sheet business they'd take it in a nano-second. The offer sheet part makes them think they have to defend. IThe biggest problem I see for Montreal is the qualifying offer next year. It'll be $6.1 million. They are already tight on cap space and Suzuki will also be needing a new deal. I hope they match, it'd be dumb.

Similarly, I think this is a dumb move by Carolina because I don't think Kotkaniemi is any good. I give them credit for at least not wasting everyone's time and presenting an offer sheet that's actually designed to get the player. The Montreal one to Aho was so weak.

Montreal turned around and traded a 1st to Arizona for Christian Dvorak. The first is the better of the two picks Montreal has, theirs and Carolina's. If both fall in the top 10 then the Coyotes get the lower of the two picks.

Arizona now has 8 picks in the top 2 rounds next year. They took on a lot of bad contracts to get there, but the contracts are all essentially one-year deals. They only have $25 million committed to next years cap. There are a lot of caveats and outside variables to forcast for Arizona's future, but they have a chance to be really good in a hurry if they manage all these assets properly.
