70% catch probability on the final hit for Eaton, who played it wrong and it went over his head. Good job giving up Giolito for that dude, Nats.

Nats bullpen had been alright lately, that’s a killer.
The Mets own Doolittle, they have 10 ERs against him this year and he's only allowed 9 to the rest of MLB combined. Also how is their second best guy still Rodney? Yikes.

The Indians have completely erased the 11½ game lead the Twins once held in the AL Central. Minnesota should have a bit of a pitching advantage for the remainder of the series:

Odorizzi vs. Plutko
Berrios vs. Civale

...but it should be interesting to see how they react to the Indians coming into Minnesota and catching them over the past two games.

Bizarre stat of the day: Cleveland is now 28-3 this season when Jason Kipnis drives in a run.

You are spot on based on the replays I saw. Eaton appeared to simply give up on the ball but the likely answer is that he misread the ball off the bat.

Acuna Jr. and Albies with quite an evening for the Braves. Albies had four hits including a HR while Acuna Jr. hit two bombs. They were a combined 7-10 with three HRs, four runs and, for those who still keep track, five RBIs. Braves won 8-4 over Miami.

Both the Yankees and Blue Jays used openers today. This abomination is going to be a permanent fixture isn’t it?

I think we need a rule that says the starting pitcher cannot be removed until he pitches at least 3 innings. 60 pitches, or 3 runs, barring injury, which, if invoked, would necessitate a minimum 10 day IL stint

Why? What is so offensive about the "opener" to you?

Reds rookie Aristides Aquino just came up a week or two ago, already has an amazing nickname (The Punisher!) and has 7 HRs in his first 27 ABs, including 3 in the first 4 innings tonight against the Cubs.

Seems like every NL contender has a shaky bullpen, despite moves at the deadline. Jansen, Doolittle, Rodney, Melancon, Shane Greene. All of them coughing up leads or blowing saves.

Yeah, I was just going to post something like that, WAS has 7 blown saves now in 15 games against the Mets this year and over a 10 ERA collectively for their bullpen. ATL announced Melancon was their new closer yesterday, tonight he gives up 4 runs in the 9th of a 6-2 game.

Seth Lugo is good though. He had retired 26 straight batters over a bunch of games before wunderkind Juan Soto hit his 2nd HR of the game to put WAS up 3-2 in the 8th. The Mets scored 2 in the bottom of the inning to go ahead and then kept in Lugo over a rested Diaz to close out the game, and he got them 1-2-3. 15 of 16 now for the Mets, ya gotta believe.

That last HR was a bomb. 452 feet and an exit velo of 107.4 MPH.

Yeah, the multi-homer games and the amazing distances they're being hit are the new normal

It's stretch time in Minnesota and Cleveland holds a 3-1 lead as they try to leave town with a share of 1st place. The legend of Aaron Civale is growing as he outpitched Twins ace Jose Berrios today. Civale has gone 6 innings in each of his 3 major league starts and has yet to allow more than 1 run in a game (ERA of 1.00). Not bad for the 24-year-old who came into the season ranked as the 24th best prospect in the organization. He tops out at 92-93 mph, but he has a cutter with basically the same spin rate as Corey Kluber's, and he locates all of his pitches exactly where he wants them. If the Indians can get Kluber back without restrictions before the end of the season, a rotation (even missing Carlos Carrasco) of Bieber-Clevinger-Kluber-Plesac-Civale isn't so bad.

Then HOU puts the next two guys on, still no one out, but can't score any more, so 7-5 to the bottom of the 9th, and Osuna proceeds to blow it, double, out, HBP, out, walkoff HR by #9 hitter Rio Ruiz.

MIN comes back with 4 hits against Brad Hand to tie it at 3 in the 9th, CLE throws out the winning run at the plate but the inning's not over yet, runner on 2nd, 2 outs, Schoop up.

Groundout, MIN/CLE go to extra innings. CLE really really needs this win, their next 10 games are brutal (3 BOS, 4@NYY, 3@NYM).

CLE comes back by loading the bases with no one out in the 10th, then Carlos Santana deposits one over the wall in left-center, 7-3 CLE.

Yarbrough throws 8 2/3 shutout innings as Rays complete the sweep in Seattle 1-0. Off to SD now. McKay goes on Tuesday in the NL Park and will get to show off those 2 way skills.

The NL contenders bullpens all seem so so bad, ATL had to use Jerry Freaking Blevins to close last night, CHC gave up 6 runs in the 9th tonight while getting 1 out (Strop and then the just picked up Holland), etc, etc. Do any NL contenders have multiple reliable back-end guys?

And now the Mets are trying to blow a 10-4 lead in the 9th. 1B, FC, Acuna HR, F5, Freeman HR, Donaldson HR, forcing Diaz into the game to close it out. 4 pitch walk and ball 1 before 3 straight sliders to end it.

He left David Robertson and Andrew Miller and Kimbrel, but they’re not helping.

the Coliseum played very small tonight. A's won 7-6 over Houston, all runs were scored by 10 HRs. 2 HRs by Correa, Brantley, Chapman and Olson, throw in rookie Joseph and Bregman for good measure.

A few Indians notes on last night's 19-5 victory over the Yankees:

• It was the first time in team history the Indians hit 3 home runs in the top of the first inning.

• It's only the second time every hitter in the Tribe's starting lineup has had a multi-hit game (the last time was in 1906).

• Terry Francona moved past Tris Speaker to become the 3rd winningest manager in Cleveland history. He will likely need just an 85-90 win season next year to move past Mike Hargrove and Lou Boudreau into the #1 spot.
